Time Out Tokyo (Time Out Guides) ReviewThis guide is not only useful, but really readable. I have lived in Japan for a number of years, but I learned a lot from the introductory articles. I also really liked the boxes giving background on interesting aspects of Japanese culture throughout the text. They changed the pace of the book, offered some fascinating information, and made the book a pleasure to refer to.Time Out Tokyo (Time Out Guides) OverviewTime Out Tokyo is the definitive guide to this fast-moving metropolis. With cultural briefings and comprehensive practical tips, this guide leads visitors through the marvels and mysteries of the world's most undiscovered capital. From futuristic skyscrapers to ancient temples, sex clubs to sushi bars, it's all here - how to navigate the city with no street names and make the most of the numerous shopping options, from must-have souvenirs to electronics bargains. The guide also explores sights beyond Tokyo, including Yokohama, the hot springs of Hakone, and the slopes of Mount Fuji. Also included are over 150 personally vetted restaurant reviews (plus a guide to reading the menu), and etiquette tips: do's and don'ts, using a bath house, sleeping in a ryokan, and more.

Will the laughter stop: Baby Boomer Chronicles ReviewThis is a funny, warm-hearted coming of age novel by a first time fiction writer. It will appeal particularly to those growing up Catholic in the Northeast in the early 1960s.Will the laughter stop: Baby Boomer Chronicles OverviewFrom the opening scene of this novel you realize that from the moment you meet Buck looking out of his bedroom window in his pajamas with an erection in June of 1961, until the closing scenes in June of 1965 on the day after high school graduation, that Buck and his friends have taken you into life in the 1960's. This novel captures the conversations; the cars; the sex; the romance; the football games; the dances; the nude streaking; the voyeur peeking; the corporal punishment in school; the skinny-dipping; the drinking; the parties; the pranks; the necking; the sand dunes; the car wrecks; the high school graduation; and the graduation party. The novel is about coming of age and the teenage rite of passage, with all its humor; gawkiness; pain; and complexity! At times you will roll with side-splitting laughter; at times you will cry; at times you will cheer! All the chronicles are intertwined with actual historical events of the time and the popular music of the period. Brown's "Will the Laughter Stop? THE BABY BOOMER CHRONICLES" will become a new kind of mantra for today's grandparents to tell other generations of Americans: "That's the way it was". The Author writes with a flair for description, and creates a viable setting in a Long Island, New York, Catholic High School, the kind every American city and town has, just around the corner. These characters' voices could have been anyone's in high school days, when they struggled to set boundaries; to develop ethical standards; to question the existence of God; to ponder their future; and the very existence of their life and goals. Readers of this book will ride along on the adventures, not knowing what the next day will bring, but always asking, "Who will star in the movie"?

By Lizzie ReviewMy 6-year-old daughter designated this her favorite book on her class questionnaire. She cherishes her own copy and gave it to two friends for Christmas. Author Mary Eccles has a wonderful ability to write of family dynamics with humor and insight and to create very believable child characters and situations. The format is also appealing: Each chapter corresponds to a month in one year of 9-year-old Lizzie's life. I read the book aloud to my daughter--but it is a good read-alone for young people ages 8 to 10. And I won't give away one surprise but will say that, once you read this book, you will never again pour dry cereal from a box without first checking inside. My daughter is hoping for a sequel and a chance to share more adventures with Lizzie.By Lizzie Overview

Napoleon's Hemorrhoids: And Other Small Events That Changed History ReviewPhil Mason's thesis is that "the impression of history we get from our school teachers and our history books is one of logical progression and reason. Things happen for a reason. Big things happen for big reasons. Napoleon's Hemorrhoids explodes this myth. Much of history turns out to be the consequence of small acts of fortune, accident or luck, good or bad."
Mason has collected hundreds of examples of small events (many with a British slant) which he argues "determined" the course of future events. He is obviously an advocate of what was once called "The Great Man" theory of history, and it is great fun to think about "what if" in many of his examples.
A few of many decisive small events:
Napoleon had an attack of haemorrhoids that intervened with his usual battlefield surveillance.
Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they ran too low on fuel.
A Canadian blacksmith threw his hammer at a fox and missed, but found a gigantic vein of silver.
Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in "The Ten Commandments" because his broken nose made him look like Michelangelo's
Einstein's last words were in German; his nurse did not understand German.
Winston Churchill might have died on the Western Front in World War I with his orderly during an artillery attack; instead he was ordered to meet with his corps commander three miles away.
Fidel Castro failed his tryout with the Washington Senators in 1947.
Ronald Reagan's application to become a member of the American Communist Party in 1938 was rejected because his vetters "thought he was a feather brain...a flake who couldn't be trusted with a political opinion for more than 30 minutes."
A great deal of speculation is involved, of course; how would things be different if we knew Einstein's last words; how many other near misses did Chruchill (or Hitler for that matter) experience; did great events really turn on such small events?

But as a source of gossipy events (did they really happen, the book is short on footnotes), it can be great fun to read and speculate on the events described here. The book is well indexed and divided into ten chapters covering history, politics, chance beginnings, business, the arts and sports, etc. That makes it easy to point to the particular passage when you are challenged for your authority for some outrageous statement you make to a friend or neighbor.

Three Strides Before the Wire: The Dark and Beautiful World of Horse Racing ReviewThis book is a disappointment to say the least. The author's account of Chris Antley and the 1999 Triple Crown lacks focus and is poorly researched. This book has many factual mistakes that even the most causal horse racing fan will catch. This book does not even come close to Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit. The author's own story of a dying boyfriend is not as effective as it should be. There are several horse racing books out right now that are much better: Jockey Gary Stevens manages to give readers a more compelling and touching portrait of Chris Antley in just one chapter of his
autobiography The Perfect Ride, then Mitchell does in her whole book!Three Strides Before the Wire: The Dark and Beautiful World of Horse Racing Overview

The Pitch: The Adventures of Luther Woundup and His Magical Orange Ball ReviewAs a native Sacramentan and avid science fiction fan, this book piqued my curiosity. The unusual, colorful cover grabbed my attention as I was browsing around Tower Books on Broadway. I bought it on a whim, and only put it down once before I was finished.
The book takes place in the near future in Sacramento, CA, in the familiar territory of downtown, on the Sacramento River, and at Raley Field (called Riders Field in the novel). Our protagonist (or is he? we're not quite sure) is Luther Woundup, a fiery redheaded sprite of a youth, who just happens to hearken from a planet called Spalding (the novel is not without its requisite sci-fi puns - but thankfully, Cabral humors us with a plausible explanation). If nothing else, this kid wants to play baseball, and bad. We soon learn that he's on a mission to collect energy from people to deliver back to his home planet - and where better to collect it than from 13,000 upbeat baseball fans? (Well, Arco Arena - but Spaldingians are apparently not into basketball.)
Luther's mission leads him to some interesting characters - Bo Wandele, a good-natured river rat with a bum leg and a homeless lisp; Susan "Mink" Minkin, a PR career woman for the baseball team whose only flaw is determination in the face of almost certain humiliation; and, believe it or not, a shockingly accurate Rush Limbaugh - who becomes more central to the story than one would ever think possible.
It's a really great book. Well written, funny, with lively characters and dialogue. We really LIKE Luther, and Bo, and Mink - and we're really rooting for them throughout the story. The plot is also very sophisticated for a "sci fi" piece. (I strongly hesitate to use that label, by the way - this novel would be enjoyed by anyone who just likes a good story.) It was interesting: After I finished the book, I felt like I was waking up from a vivid dream - I guess I was that committed to what I was reading.
I'm very much a supporter of local writers, arts and entertainment, and I think this book is just as good as anything else out there. I gave it four stars instead of five just because it felt a little rough around the edges in places, but it was truly worth reading. I wholeheartedly recommend this book - especially if you're a Sacramentan, a baseball nut, or a Rush Limbaugh fan/enemy (trust me, the character will appeal to both conservatives AND the "bleeding-hearts!")The Pitch: The Adventures of Luther Woundup and His Magical Orange Ball OverviewTo contact the author, please send e-mail to RAC@ThePitchBook.comFrom the moment Luther Woundup launches the orange baseball over the wall at Riders Field, Sacramento fans are introduced to the most intriguing mascot the game has ever seen. Luther bursts onto the field and into their hearts with the most ingenious, magical displays. But like a modern day Trojan Horse, the display serves as a ruse to collect human brain waves with an innocent-looking device invented by Luther's father, the reigning scientist on Spalding. The mission: convert the contents into cortesium, which is needed to save his people. At least, that's what Luther is told. Eventually, he learns the true purpose of his mission, pitting father against son in The Pitch
