The Semblance of Truth ReviewInspired by real-life events, "The Semblance of Truth" The Semblance of Truth is an engrossing tale of intrigue set in small-town Missouri in 1969, 30 years after the brutal rape and murder of a young white schoolteacher followed by the burning alive of a young black man accused of the crimes.
Connally Daulton is the local newspaper editor who wants to find the truth...and he has reason to believe the young black man was a scapegoat for a white man's crimes.
Using the technique of multiple first-person narrators combined with his talent for incredibly detailed description, Puntney propels readers through Daulton's search for truth. He takes the main plot and combines it with Vietnam War flashbacks accompanied by subplots of race relations in the 60s and local political corruption and the presence of a mysterious town arsonist and love interests of various characters. There's enough here to keep the pages turning.
For newspaper journalists in his audience, Puntney captures the exhilaration of being on deadline in the newsroom and the thrill of the presses running in the same building.
And for a real treat - for readers who knew the pre-computerized newsrooms of the 1960s - Puntney reminds us of the days when green eyeshades prevailed, when typewriters clacked out "takes" of copy to be pasted together and handed to Linotype operators and when headlines were actually "set" from cases of metal letters.
