The first half of the book gently guides you through setup and all the options available with this camera, helping you quickly become comfortable with what beginners will find is a challenging camera. Every newbie will love the introduction to the features in the first half of this book, especially the parts that explain exactly what menu options you might want to use, and exactly why you would want to use each setting. Only the most essential information is provided in this part of the book, although the author does refer you to later sections if you do have a question that must be answered right now.
Then, the second half of the book is an introduction to digital SLR photography, specifically aimed at Nikon D3000 users. For example, the chapter on exposure explains exposure concepts clearly, but relates them directly to the exposure controls, histograms, and other features of the D3000. There is a chapter on lenses that explains the ideas of wide angle and telephoto lenses, but within the context of the lenses available for the D3000 -- which you might want to use, and which you might want to save for later in your photographic experience.
I found the organization and presentation of this book to be perfect -- it starts off easy to understand, and saves the more involved ideas for later in the book.
