Hurling ReviewThis is definitely not a general book explaining the game of hurling ... it is a look at the teams and personalities, players, managers, (and county boards) that defined today's inter-county hurling. Starting with the rise of Clare in the mid 90's, ending with the Cork players (1st) strike in 2002. Chapters are self contained, entertaining and focused on particular teams, campaigns, players or incidents, with plenty of quotes from the people involved. The period covered was a tremendously interesting and competitive one, and saw the rise of teams like Clare and Waterford, stars like DJ Carey and Brien Whelahan, and managers like Ger Loughnane. The book also covers teams like Kerry and Down playing for the love of the game with little hope of reaching the top.
A fantastic book for hurling fans. As a Corkman I particularly enjoyed the coverage of the '99 All Ireland and the strike ( one and a half out of 10 chapters, so there's plenty for the non-Rebel fans too ), the chapters on Clare in '95 and '98 were wonderful, Waterford and the McCarthys, DJ, BW, Wexford, Tipp, Limerick, Offaly, Kilkenny....
If you have any interest in the modern game of hurling and the people that made it great, you won't be disappointed in this book.
Hurling OverviewAfter Clare's breakthrough in the mid-1990s, Hurling entered an era of unprecedented excitement and unpredictability, with new teams emerging to challenge the old powers. "Hurling: The Revolution Years" tells the untold stories of this extraordinary period. Denis Walsh gets behind the scenes in Ger Loughnane's Clare and Liam Griffin's Wexford and explores the mentality that made Offaly so different. He has conducted thirty-five original interviews including frank conversations with legends like D.J. Carey and Anthony Daly that evoke this period in thrilling detail and shed fresh light on the dramas that shook the hurling world, on and off the field. If you thought you already knew the story of hurling's revolution, think again.
