Man on the Run: The Life and Death of Marco Pantani ReviewI think the phrase, lost in translation, applies to this book. I waited months for it to be sent after I pre-ordered it. It was available in Europe at the beginning of the year, but that's ok, they were probably translating it. Unfortunately, it "feels" very translated, if that makes sense.
While I appreciate the insight from Ronchi because she was someone who was very close to Pantani and obviously tried to help him, at times I felt like it was her just justifying her actions to the world with a series of choppy responses to criticisms that were made about her part in his life.
My feeling at the end of the book; it rambled, that's how I felt. BUT, there was no way I was not going to buy this book because as a cycling fan, Pantani was one of the unique talents from the recent batch. If only he could have straightened himself out, he would have given Lance some serious competition in the mountains during his other tour wins. This guy won 2 major stage races in 1998, the Giro and the Tour de France, beating Julich, Ulrich and other prominent riders at the time. He was on course to do it again in 1999, but a test registered a high Hemocrit level (same thing we are seeing today with top stars)the night before his Giro win. It really was all down hill from there.
On a side note, I seriously wonder about these tests. One has to ask why would someone at the top of their game risk cheating when they know they are in the most highly tested sport in the world. I am thinking about Tyler Hamilton and Roberto Heras. Barry Bonds admits to steroid use but is still in baseball? Cyclists take a substance that is used for treating Anemia and they are vilified. (back off my soap box)
The book by John Wilcockson, Marco Pantani: The Legend of a Tragic Champion was much better written, researched, put together, etc. It is a different perspective, that of a reporter, but this guy has been on the cycling scene forever, knows all the big names personally and just has a real historical perspective about him. His book on following Lance in his tour victory, stage by stage, 23 days in July was also outstanding.Man on the Run: The Life and Death of Marco Pantani Overview

Get Paid to Play: Every Student Athlete's Guide to Over $1 Million in College Scholarships ReviewNancy Nitardy has poured her extensive knowledge as a collegiate athlete, coach and recruiter into this wonderful book. I have had the opportunity to attend a couple of her seminars. This book follows her presentations and organizes the information into an easy guide to help you through the whole college recruitment process and beyond.
This book is a must-read for any athlete with the goal of playing sports in college, as well as their parents. Nancy points out the vast amount of opportunites available for athletes and how to go about living their dream.
Get Paid to Play: Every Student Athlete's Guide to Over $1 Million in College Scholarships OverviewThis book is a handbook for college-bound high school athletes that are interested in playing sports in college. The book will help athletes get recruited by colleges that best match the athlete's level of play, whether that level is NCAA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Division I, II, or III, NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), or NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Detailed information about athletic scholarship opportunities, as well as tips on matching students (and marketing them) to appropriate coaches and programs, will be presented in plain language with an appealing, accessible design. This book combines Nancy Nitardy's extensive coaching, recruiting, and admissions counseling expertise, Kaplan's test preparation and admissions strategies, and Dr. Gail Schlachter's (of Reference Service Press) robust scholarship data. It demystifies the process for counselors and athletes alike, presenting four-year plans for both academics and athletics, and walking student athletes through the recruiting and college application processes. The most unique section of this book is a comprehensive list of athletic scholarships, provided by Reference Service Press. Our listing will include approximately 500 scholar-athlete scholarships, and other "portable" scholarships that are not tied to a particular institution (making our book the only one on the market to do so). Each listing will look like those presented in Kaplan's Scholarships book, including contact information, eligibility requirements, financial data, and important deadlines.

Shake Down the Thunder: The Creation of Notre Dame Football ReviewSHAKE DOWN THE THUNDER is a scholarly look at a sports phenomenon - the creation and early development of football at Notre Dame to 1941 and the hiring of Frank Leahy as coach. Much of the book is devoted to the politics within the university community among the coaches, administrators and influential alumni. It is also a story about the rise of Notre Dame football during a period when Catholics were striving for more influence politically and more acceptance in general in the United States.
The author makes much use of the private correspondence of Knute Rockne and paints a very unromantic picture of the great coach and some of his star players. Based on this book Lee Marvin or Robert Mitchum instead of Ronald Reagan are the best choices to play the part of George Gipp in a movie.
SHAKE DOWN THE THUNDER is more of a cultural history than a football story. It contains very little football action. The book is well-researched and shows how both the urge to overemphasize college football and the resulting forces trying to contain it have been in existence for a long time.Shake Down the Thunder: The Creation of Notre Dame Football Overview
