Sports in Lincoln County (NC) (Images of Sports) Review
This 123-page book is essentially a collection of photos of various teams and athletes who played sports in Lincoln County, North Carolina during the twentieth century. Most of the photos have a short description of the person or team depicted. Collectively, the photos present an interesting picture of small town life in rural North Carolina.
My interest in the book stemmed from its photos and descriptions of the baseball teams sponsored by the Boger & Crawford textile mills in Boger City in the 1920s and 1930s. Robert C. Boger, the founder of the company, viewed athletics as a means of promoting the morale of his workers. He did the same thing at his plant in Philadelphia; but there the team that he sponsored was a local church team (Ascension CYO - Catholic Youth Organization).
The photos of the Lincoln County athletes give the viewer an insight into the way that the community felt about the Boger & Crawford teams, an insight that is entirely consistent with what we know of the practical business management exercised by Robert Boger and other business owners.
It is now the twenty-first century. Boger & Crawford is gone. The textile business left the United States long ago. The local B & C athletes are gone; they got old. But the things that the locals still remember are the ball teams and the athletes who played on those teams. Their accomplishments were important to their communities; and their families do not let go of the memories. Local sports are important.
Sports in Lincoln County (NC) (Images of Sports) OverviewSince 1900, the lure of roaring crowds, bitter rivalries, and team spirit has occupied a significant place in the social history of Lincolnton and Lincoln County. This tradition began at Horseshoe Park, where local baseball teams played against opponents from Lenoir, Morganton, and the mountains of North Carolina. Over time, leagues grew in popularity and teams were added from Boger and Crawford and Glenn Mills, as well as high school teams. Teams such as the Lincolnton Cardinals and Lincolnton Red Sox left lasting legacies. The Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame ensures that the athletes of a bygone era will always be remembered and they can continue to serve as inspiration for future generations of sports players and fans.
