Naked America: Stripped of Its Many Myths, The Bare Truth Suggests Revolutionary Economic, Political and Social Reforms Review"Naked America" is a book of essays where you don't even have to start at the front to read this book. You can just let the book fall open to a page and start reading. The chapters are nice and short so if you only have 10 minutes to learn an enormous amount of information and be a better American - then this is the book for you. This is not a book of dull essays. Nor are they one sided with an agenda to promote. They simply tell it like it is - the naked straight forward truth about us. They're easy to read and understand.
For example, Chapter 5 "The Path of Self-destruction" is only 6 pages long. But, what six pages they are. It's mind boggling to comprehend so much information about our past history in such a short space.
Or, you can start at the front and look over the chapter titles. Pick one that sounds interesting and start there. The first thing you'll discover is that you will quickly find yourself at the end of that short chapter and wanting to read more.
Chapter 27 "The Challenges Teachers Face Daily" is one that every teacher will want to read for sure. The ten pages say it all. Every parent needs to read it also. It'll make you a better parent for sure. The truth is told, but there is also hope for the future of our education system.
Or try Chapter 38 about Crime in America. Go ahead. I dare you to read these fourteen pages.
The essays in "Naked America" examine all our beliefs and history to see if they are or ever were true. Along the way, you get a wonderful overview of Americans - both in who we think we are and what we really are.
What I really appreciate the most is the extensive index at the end. If you are a skeptic, you can go look up all the resources and data. Author Michael Smith knows of what he speaks. The facts to back up the text are all there. It's the reference book you'll want to have close by.
If nothing else, you will be able to amaze your friends with fascinating statistics on nearly every subject.
This is the one book every American needs to have. It should be at the top of the Best Sellers List.
Naked America: Stripped of Its Many Myths, The Bare Truth Suggests Revolutionary Economic, Political and Social Reforms OverviewEvery society has its ideals, and its myths. In Naked America, author Michael A. Smith examines many of the nation's original ideals, and presents compelling information indicating most of them have been transformed into myths. For example, many regularly describe the United States as the land of economic opportunity, yet 20 percent of American households earn half of all income, and own more than half of all the nation's assets. Education is touted as the road to success, although only one-third of high school graduates achieve a postsecondary education degree. Two-thirds of future jobs in what has become essentially a service economy are projected to be low- or very low-paying. In the world's self-proclaimed "greatest democracy," pessimism about government is widespread and only 35 percent of registered voters vote regularly. Although more than 80 percent of Americans profess to be practicing Christians, New Testament ethics appear overwhelmed by mindless materialism, pervasive marketplace fraud, a high crime rate, constant ideological bickering, and cultural kitsch. To rectify this situation and turn America's ideals into reality, the author proposes many wide-ranging social, economic, and political reforms.
