Napoleon's Hemorrhoids: And Other Small Events That Changed History ReviewPhil Mason's thesis is that "the impression of history we get from our school teachers and our history books is one of logical progression and reason. Things happen for a reason. Big things happen for big reasons. Napoleon's Hemorrhoids explodes this myth. Much of history turns out to be the consequence of small acts of fortune, accident or luck, good or bad."
Mason has collected hundreds of examples of small events (many with a British slant) which he argues "determined" the course of future events. He is obviously an advocate of what was once called "The Great Man" theory of history, and it is great fun to think about "what if" in many of his examples.
A few of many decisive small events:
Napoleon had an attack of haemorrhoids that intervened with his usual battlefield surveillance.
Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they ran too low on fuel.
A Canadian blacksmith threw his hammer at a fox and missed, but found a gigantic vein of silver.
Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in "The Ten Commandments" because his broken nose made him look like Michelangelo's
Einstein's last words were in German; his nurse did not understand German.
Winston Churchill might have died on the Western Front in World War I with his orderly during an artillery attack; instead he was ordered to meet with his corps commander three miles away.
Fidel Castro failed his tryout with the Washington Senators in 1947.
Ronald Reagan's application to become a member of the American Communist Party in 1938 was rejected because his vetters "thought he was a feather brain...a flake who couldn't be trusted with a political opinion for more than 30 minutes."
A great deal of speculation is involved, of course; how would things be different if we knew Einstein's last words; how many other near misses did Chruchill (or Hitler for that matter) experience; did great events really turn on such small events?

But as a source of gossipy events (did they really happen, the book is short on footnotes), it can be great fun to read and speculate on the events described here. The book is well indexed and divided into ten chapters covering history, politics, chance beginnings, business, the arts and sports, etc. That makes it easy to point to the particular passage when you are challenged for your authority for some outrageous statement you make to a friend or neighbor.

The Game of the Century: Nebraska vs. Oklahoma in College Football's Ultimate Battle ReviewI was 14 year old boy in 1971, living in Lincoln, Nebraska, we would ride our bikes to the stadium and sneak in games by crawling under and over fences. That season has always held a special place in my youth and this book brings back all of the memories and gives a deeper insight into that game.
Any fan of football will enjoy this wonderful book, even Sooners. It goes into history of the game and both programs and interviews members of both teams, giving a background of the game I never had.
and of course the best part is that the Huskers still win.
Now if only I can get a DVD of the game for Christmas...The Game of the Century: Nebraska vs. Oklahoma in College Football's Ultimate Battle Overview

Chasing Tiger ReviewI have enjoyed Sampson's writing in the past, but this book disappointed. As advertised, it really is a book about the chasing of Tiger Woods -- by competitors, fans and media. One can enjoy the "behind the scenes" looks at the tour, and if you are interested in Charles Howell III, you will get a bunch of info here. I felt the book headed off in too many directions, the metaphors were WAY overblown, and the lack of focus was frustrating. If you are interested in the peripheral insights to be gained, or simply love Sampson -- wait for the paperback!Chasing Tiger Overview

BLESSED ASSURANCE: A HISTORY OF EVANGELICALISM IN AMERICA ReviewAfter reading this book in one sitting, I am still unclear about its purpose. Readers expecting an historical overview will quickly become mired in long discussions about colonial ethnic politics. Readers expecting more penetrating scholarship will be put off by such gloss-overs as when Balmer writes the socially complex Salem Witch Trials off with a single word: 'misogyny' or when he repeatedly asserts that contemporary hymns inherit significant sexual imagery from the pietistic tradition but never presents an argument to support this assertion. The final two chapters strike me as thinly veiled assaults on Promise Keepers and the Christian Coalition. Justified or not, these attacks take the book out of the realm of history and into the realm of socio-political commentary, thus adding to my confusion about its ultimate purpose.
Balmer does have some interesting things to say, particularly about how American individualism and anti-institutionalism affect American politics and religion. Despite its apparent lack of focus, I enjoyed reading the book and found some useful nuggets related to my current academic project. Students of history, sociology, or religion may find the end-notes a good starting point for more serious study. Those looking for an overview (as the sub-title suggests) should look elsewhere.BLESSED ASSURANCE: A HISTORY OF EVANGELICALISM IN AMERICA Overview

The Cubs: The Complete Story of Chicago Cubs Baseball ReviewI think I have read every Cubs book ever published and, without question, this is by far the best, best looking, and most comprehensive history of the team i have ever read. It has a little of everything, well, actually alot of everything - hundreds of new pictures, stats and essays plus a narrative history that reads like a PBS special, smart, thorough and thought provoking. Unlike so many other Cubs books this doesn't just focus on 1969, or all the billy goat bs, but tells Cub history as one big story, from the beginning to the start of the 2007 season. It looks like a coffee table book (and is BIG) but reads like something David McCullough might have written. Good to read straight through, like I did, or to flip through and look at the pictures like my son did with his grandfather. After reading this book you'll love the Cubs just as much as ever but you'll win any argument with other Cubs fans.
The only thing I didn't like was the ending. If the Cubs could only win a World Series, this book would be perfect. The Cubs: The Complete Story of Chicago Cubs Baseball Overview

The Decline of the Third Republic, 1914 - 1938 (The Cambridge History of Modern France) ReviewBought it for a class. Super boring. It's probably really good if you're into this stuff though. I, however, am not.The Decline of the Third Republic, 1914 - 1938 (The Cambridge History of Modern France) OverviewThis book provides a detailed account of the Third Republic in France between the outbreak and conduct of the First World War and the fall of Leon Blum's Front Populaire soon after Hitler's invasion and annexation of Austria in 1938. Following the trauma of war, France slipped into the "era of illusions" which despite the comparative prosperity of the 1920s led to the slump and the severe social and economic unrest of the 1930s. The short-lived experiment of Blum's Front Populaire gave way to more conservatively-based ministries, but by 1938 a new common enemy began to draw together the political opinion of the country.

Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World ReviewI was led to this book after hearing it raved about on NPR, At first the author tells several stories, alternating between Trudy's story and fascinating background about the history of swimming, women's sports, and the English Channel. Then in the second half it all comes together. The chapters about the actual Channel swim unfold like a movie. Extremely evocative and moving, I plan on using portions of this book to teach my students, not only about a portion of American history they probably haven't heard of previously, but as an example of narrative writing at its finest. I cannot believe her story has never been told before. What an inspiration!Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World Overview

Heart of Whiteness: Afrikaners Face Black Rule In the New South Africa ReviewAs an Afrikaner, I enjoyed this book because the authors allow their Afrikaner informants to tell their own story. The "voice" of the Afrikaner community (or at least, a segment thereof) is clearly heard in this book and is not drowned out by the authors' own narrative. In other words, reading the book, one learns more about the respondents and their everyday lived reality, than about the authors and their subjective perceptions (an approach that should typify any good ethnography). However, I was dismayed by the large number of factual errors, some trivial and some quite substantial. Afrikaans words in the text are often misspelled or used in an incorrect case and/or context. Afrikaner history also becomes rather truncated and overly defined in terms of 20th century events. The authors also exhibit an over-reliance on respondents who are theologists and/or theological academics. The political economy of Afrikaner Nationalism, and by extension Apartheid, does not get the attention it deserves. Apartheid was not primarily a religio-political phenomenon, even though religion was used at the level of discourse to explain, excuse, and justify the political system. More attention should be paid to the role of Afrikaner working class urbanization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
All in all, a worthwhile read for those outside Afrikanerdom wanting to gain a better understanding of some of its internal anxieties.Heart of Whiteness: Afrikaners Face Black Rule In the New South Africa Overview

Italy since 1945 (Short Oxford History of Italy) ReviewThis is very concise short exploration of Italy since the end of WWII. It touches on the many aspects of Italian life, the rise of the middle class, the shift towards mediteranianism, the triumph of Christian Democracy, and the love of sport(football). This book also touches on the love hate mentality that Italians have for Americans, they love our protection but love to hate the USA. This is a short narrative, it perhaps does not touch on the more important events that are shaping Italy today. The mafia, the red terrorists, the elections of 1992, the corruption, the craxi regime, the invasion of immigrants and the plight of the south. Perhaps the book needs to be longer, it should be recommended as a short concise read on Italy for those taking a survey course or those interested in the current state.Italy since 1945 (Short Oxford History of Italy) OverviewItaly since 1945 sets in context the tremendous changes that Italy has undergone in the last 55 years. In place of the land of pizza, sunshine, and soccer, McCarthy describes a developing nation: an economy that has found its own road to success via the piccole imprese with an increasingly strong stockmarket and more sophisticated banking; a dynamic, traditional, family-centered society; and a political system struggling to modernize after forty years of Christian Democrat rule and Communist opposition.McCarthy also looks at the role of the Church, including Pius XII's wartime activities and the 'foreign pope', John-Paul II before finally turning to sport in Italy - the only country to have 3 daily newspapers devoted to the subject. Authoritative, accessible, and absorbing, the book examines modern Italy through the eyes of 10 leading commentators and explores the Italian experience in the wider context of both the nation's past and its wider contemporary European position.

Religion in Twentieth Century America (Religion in American Life) ReviewThis neat little book is a wonderful overview of the evolution of religion in the United States in the twentieth century. The book begins with the early schism between the more conservative branch of Protestantism (which produced the Fundamentals of the Faith) and the more liberal branch (which produced the National Council of Churches). However, as it flows along, it embraces the streams Roman Catholic and Jewish development. Eventually, the book examines the arrival of traditional non-Judeo-Christian religions, and New Age religions.
This is a great book, one that gives the reader a clear understanding of religion in the United States, and how we arrived at this point. Although originally written for High School age readers (or perhaps because of that), it is highly informative to any reader, and indeed this orientation means that it is an easy read for those not already knowledgeable about the subject. I highly recommend this book.Religion in Twentieth Century America (Religion in American Life) Overview

The Economics of Football ReviewI just got the newer version in the mail today. It is about 8 years more recent. Similar material and price but the newer version seems to have broken up some of the chapters into smaller pieces. The Economics of Football OverviewThis book presents an original economic analysis of the English professional football industry. The economic influences on decisions taken by owners, managers, players and spectators are all considered, using theoretical and empirical methods of economic investigation. The empirical analysis draws on English club-level data, with extensive international comparisons. Concludes with an extended discussion of a number of major economic policy issues affecting the future of the football industry, including European super league proposals, contractual arrangements in the players' labor market, and football's evolving relationship with the broadcasting media.

The Wicked City: Chicago From Kenna To Capone (Illinois) ReviewI'm the sure that the main draw to this book concerns the seedy, gangster underworld of Chicago. I don't know if I have enough patience to get there; the narrative so far relates sound-bite stories of the founders, urban planners, and architects who first erected this city. It's extremely interesting material, but Johnson's flits over it all in barely readable, fragmented prose. Furthermore, as one unfamiliar with the city (especially as it was in the 1800s), his descriptions of the landscape (and the design of the buildings) leaves me still with a black box imagination of what the city looks like. Pictures or illustrations would well suit the understanding of this book, which would lead to the (hopeful point of the story) understanding of the city. The Wicked City: Chicago From Kenna To Capone (Illinois) Overview

Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain ReviewWhen I was a youngster, I was a huge fan of Thurman Munson.
To this day, if I close my eyes, I can quickly remember the feeling of sitting in Yankee Stadium, as a 13-year old, with my father, watching the Yankees play with Munson at bat and runners on base.
During these moments, my heart would race - where it felt like it was about to jump out of my chest (because it was beating so hard and fast). Why? Because I wanted Thurman to come through...as he was "my guy."
And, more times than not, Munson did the job.
It's been so many years, but, in this memory, I can still see Munson slapping a line drive into right field, as if he was picking the ball out of opposing catcher's mitt with his bat, waiting until the last minute to go the other way with the pitch, with Yankees runners rounding third and coming home to score...man, talk about pure exhilaration...that was it.
Being such a Munson fan, I was (and still am) very interested in learning more about him. And, for the last three decades or so, I've been waiting for the ultimate book covering the entire story of Thurman Munson.
Now, thanks to Marty Appel, with his new book "Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain," we have what I have been waiting for...all these years. With this book Appel provides us with the complete account of Thurman Munson's life and untimely passing...with no holds barred.
With this work, we get to see the many facets of Munson's life: Thurman as a ball player, a friend, the family man and a real estate entrepreneur. And, we get to see the good and the bad sides of the man. This includes getting to see Thurman as the everyday likeable guy who eats Oreos and milk for breakfast, watches the Three Stooges, sings commercial jingles to himself, has a terrible sense of fashion, and who would go out of his way to help people (with no fanfare whatsoever). But, we also get to see Thurman as someone who was somewhat insecure at times, cursed at sportswriters, gave the fans "the finger" during a game, cut many of the dysfunctional family members out of his life, and who once fired a gun in the Yankee Stadium parking lot.
Also, with this biography, Appel provides a superior account of the complete Thurman Munson timeline - bringing us from Munson's youth, through his time with the Yankees, to covering his tragic death in terms of the event itself and the impact it had on many (both inside and outside the Munson circle).
But, what I enjoyed most about "Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain" is how the story is told. In the book, Appel uses his own voice as well as those of many others who knew Thurman - including his teammates and friends. And, many of these sources are people who most were never aware (until now) as being a big part of Munson's life or parties that you would not expect to have some insight on the Munson story.
In summary, I would offer that "Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain" is a must read for any Yankees fan over the age of forty, a highly recommended read for Yankees fans of any age, and a recommended read for anyone interested in baseball and a very well-done story about one of more notable players from the last half-century of the game's history.
This book will engross, entertain, enlighten and "touch" you all at the same time. It's too bad that we had to wait 30 years for a book like this on Thurman Munson. But, now that its here, I cannot imagine a better one ever being done compared to the job Marty Appel did with "Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain."Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain Overview

America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured a Nation ReviewMichael MacCambridge has produced a volume of research and analysis worthy of any historical bookshelf. Let the reader beware: the author is nothing but faithful to his title. This is not a nostalgic romp with the Decatur Staleys, nor a highlight reel in words. Rather, MacCambridge traces and assesses how the corporate NFL has managed itself from its humble pre-World War II status to a position today of sports preeminence.
For starters, the author does not think much of pro football before 1945. Pro football was a confederation of teams, all of which were north and east of a line between Chicago and Washington. The owners were a club unto themselves, mostly Catholic and educated by nuns. Their greatest gifts to the game, in MacCambridge's view, are that they did not muck it up too much and they elected Bert Bell to serve as commissioner after the war. Bell was not the brightest bulb in the chandelier--his selection smacks of cronyism as much as anything--but in his humble, gracious way, Bell served the game as well as the owners. He was the first commissioner who sensed an obligation to protect the game itself.
He was challenged quickly enough by another major figure in this work, Paul Brown, and a new league taking shape, the All America Football Conference. The AAFC enjoyed a brief flare of success in the late 1940's, with franchises in glamour cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. On the field, however, the premiere team was Cleveland, where Brown invented the model of modern coaching management. Cleveland and its imitators in the AAFC were simply too good to go away. Bell decided to pick the franchises he wanted and add them to the NFL fraternity. By 1950 the NFL was coast to coast and the enemy had been destroyed.
With Bell's sudden death in 1959, the NFL owners closeted for eleven days, and when the white smoke poured from football's Sistine Chapel, there on the balcony stood the longest of long shots, the Rams General Manager Pete Rozelle, 33. If there is a hero in this book it is Rozelle. He, too, was tested from the start, by a number of millionaires from across the country, in particular the south, clamoring for league expansion and new franchises.
In truth, the old guard did not want expansion, but unlike baseball with its antitrust exemption, the NFL under Rozelle was indeed vulnerable to a charge of cabalistic behavior. Rozelle could not play dumb as Bell had. There were too many suitors now, at least a dozen. As these prospective new owners gravitated toward a new American League, Rozelle tried to slow the momentum by the early 1960's addition of Dallas, Minnesota, and Atlanta franchises to the NFL. In hindsight, Rozelle might have done better to appease Lamar Hunt, the driving force behind the new AFL.
The titanic battle of the two leagues ended in 1966, with secret negotiations between Rozelle and Hunt [and not Al Davis, the actual AFL commissioner, who would get his pound of flesh from Rozelle] prompted by bidding wars for top draft choices and then established league stars. MacCambridge observes that negotiating conference alignments was as difficult as selling merger itself. Who of the old guard would go to the AFC?
What made this entire enterprise workable, in the final analysis, was Roselle's management of television. Beginning in the 1960's Rozelle negotiated a series of network contracts that ensured many healthy benefits: national coverage [to feed enthusiasm of local fans], the much beloved "double-header game" at 4 PM, and most importantly, equal division of TV revenue among all teams. In addition, MacCambridge gives considerable attention to Rozelle's cultivation of Ed and Steve Sabol's NFL films production as an invaluable marketing tool of the league.
MacCambridge is the first author of my experience to explain the significance of the USFL's suit against the NFL and its potential to destroy the league. The USFL, a pleasant little league that enjoyed its workable niche in the springtime sports world, decided to go head to head with the NFL in the fall, and filed its now-famous antitrust suit. Rozelle's first instinct was to settle, but he and the owners were dissuaded by the brilliant attorney Paul Tagliabue. Tagliabue understood that a non-defense by the NFL would make the league vulnerable to suits from any sandlot league claiming to be shut out of the national TV market and demanding admission to the NFL.
The USFL trial completely exhausted Rozelle, who resigned after a three decade tenure. His replacement in 1989, the steely Tagliabue, would find his tenure filled with home-grown problems. Player conduct, an absence of minority executives and coaches, unforeseen difficulties with the new league salary cap, and even a bare breasted Janet Jackson Superbowl fiasco would occupy his first fifteen years. But his biggest challenge came from the owners themselves over an issue considered anathema forty years before: franchise jumping. Los Angeles to Oakland, Los Angeles to St. Louis, Cleveland to Baltimore, and Houston's melancholic relocation to Vanderbilt University--this was a trend that would alienate the heart of the league's success, fan identification, not to mention a repudiation of the founding credo, "the good of the league." Clearly, Tagliabue did not enjoy the power of a 1970 Rozelle, but the author notes that the commissioner was not Bud Selig, either. His compromise of restoring expansion franchises to Cleveland and Houston was better than nothing. And Tagliabue may have gotten help from an unexpected source: wholesale taxpayer opposition to publicly funded football stadiums, which would of necessity put a damper on owner enthusiasms.
In the final analysis, MacCambridge believes that the NFL is still the healthiest of all professional sports in the United States in terms of fan base and business practices. This work contains an exhaustive bibliography that will probably send the reader off in several directions--at least till the season starts.

Rome 1960: The Summer Olympics That Stirred the World ReviewI bought this book after hearing an interview with Maraniss on NPR. Normally, this isn't my kind of book. I'm not an athlete. I'm not a fanatic about the Olympics. I'd rather knit or read a cozy mystery that I can breeze through in a night. And yet, I love this book.
Each chapter is like a short essay on some facet of the 1960 Olympics: the controverial decision in the men's swimming event, the Tigerbelles' encounters with racisim on their road the Olympics, the political controvery between China and Taiwan, and more. Maraniss paints a picture of the world's political and social climate to show how those factors affected the 1960 Olympics and how the 1960 Olympics affected the world.
Each story is compelling--48 years later, I feel minor outrage that Lance Larson wasn't awarded the gold for men's swimming. I understand the terror Rafer Johnson must have felt outside of Lenin Stadium when the Russian crowd surged toward him after his defeat of Kuznetsov. Maraniss deftly captures the human stories and makes this reader care. I'm only 5 chapters into the book, but I wish I could skip work today to finish the rest of the book.
Before reading this book, I hadn't watched the Olympics in over 20 years. Now, I'm psyched for 2008 Summer Olympics!

Consuming Russia: Popular Culture, Sex, and Society since Gorbachev ReviewThis book has the rare quality of being a classroom text as well as a report. Today's Russia. Pyramid schemes, religion, rave parties, rock music, detective stories, cinema, pets, porn, graffiti, tattooing... the carnival of crazy New Russia to be read overnight. A shock.Consuming Russia: Popular Culture, Sex, and Society since Gorbachev OverviewWith the collapse of the Soviet empire in the late 1980s, the Russian social landscape has undergone its most dramatic changes since the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, turning the once bland and monolithic state-run marketplace into a virtual maze of specialty shops—from sushi bars to discotheques and tattoo parlors. In Consuming Russia editor Adele Marie Barker presents the first book-length volume to explore the sweeping cultural transformation taking place in the new Russia. The contributors examine how the people of Russia reconcile prerevolutionary elite culture—as well as the communist legacy—with the influx of popular influences from the West to build a society that no longer relies on a single dominant discourse and embraces the multiplicities of both public and private Russian life. Barker brings together Russian and American scholars from anthropology, history, literature, political science, sociology, and cultural studies. These experts fuse theoretical analysis with ethnographic research to analyze the rise of popular culture, covering topics as varied as post-Soviet rave culture, rock music, children and advertising, pyramid schemes, tattooing, pets, and spectator sports. They consider detective novels, anecdotes, issues of feminism and queer sexuality, nostalgia, the Russian cinema, and graffiti. Discussions of pornography, religious cults, and the deployment of Soviet ideological symbols as post-Soviet kitsch also help to demonstrate how the rebuilding of Russia's political and economic infrastructure has been influenced by its citizens' cultural production and consumption. This volume will appeal to those engaged with post-Soviet studies, to anyone interested in the state of Russian society, and to readers more generally involved with the study of popular culture.Contributors. Adele Marie Barker, Eliot Borenstein, Svetlana Boym, John Bushnell, Nancy Condee, Robert Edelman, Laurie Essig, Julia P. Friedman, Paul W. Goldschmidt, Judith Deutsch Kornblatt, Anna Krylova, Susan Larsen, Catharine Theimer Nepomnyaschy, Theresa Sabonis-Chafee, Tim Scholl, Adam Weiner, Alexei Yurchak, Elizabeth Kristofovich Zelensky
