End Zone ReviewThis very early product from the mind of DeLillo is sharp with the kind of ideas DeLillo would go on with, though not always successfully. His characters in this book are both base and philosophical, and the narrator, Gary Harkness, is a man who is into both the visceral thrills of football and world destruction as well as the higher functions of meaning and love. DeLillo mixes the base grunts of football with the war philosophy of Sun Tzu, and this book maintains that level through short, precise explosions of thought and action. While other books like _The Names_ tend to talk more about philosophy rather than exemplify it, _End Zone_ is a surgical airstrike in itself, and well worth the read.
End Zone OverviewIn West Texas, college men play football with intense passion. During a winning season the running back, Gary Harkness, is fuelled by fear of, and fascination with, nuclear conflict. Among players the terminologies of football and nuclear war - the language of end zones - become interchanged.

Chasing Tiger ReviewI have enjoyed Sampson's writing in the past, but this book disappointed. As advertised, it really is a book about the chasing of Tiger Woods -- by competitors, fans and media. One can enjoy the "behind the scenes" looks at the tour, and if you are interested in Charles Howell III, you will get a bunch of info here. I felt the book headed off in too many directions, the metaphors were WAY overblown, and the lack of focus was frustrating. If you are interested in the peripheral insights to be gained, or simply love Sampson -- wait for the paperback!Chasing Tiger Overview

It Was Never About a Hotdog and a Coke A Personal Account of the 1960 sit-in Demonstrations in Jacksonville, Florida and AX Handle Saturday ReviewI found Mr. Hursts account of his experiences during the the civil rights struggle in Jacksonville, Fl during the early 1960's to be the most compelling, riveting, and accurate that I have ever read. It forces you to remember where you were and what you were doing on those dates and times. Excellent! A must Read!!

The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels (Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame series) ReviewFinally there's a book on the over-flowing wrestling literature market dedicated to the wrestlers that we, the enthusiastic legion of marks, absolutely love to hate. We call them bad guys, villains, or evil-doers, but in the carnival world of professional wrestling, they are known as "HEELS." The purpose of a wrestling heel is to create a buzz around a match or a storyline and influence the marks (fans) to buy tickets and maybe a little merchandise too - this "buzz" is called "HEAT." The heat generated by these sultans of immorality is ultimately the catalyst that builds up our favorite wrestlers, the ones we cheer for, into bonafide heroes. So in essence, the heel is the most important responsibility in a professional wrestling environment.
Established wrestling journalists, Greg Oliver and Steven Johnson, hit the road to conduct hundreds of interviews with wrestlers, managers, promoters, historians and many others to piece together mini-biographies of about seventy-five of the most hated grapplers of all-time. Starting with a top twenty, and then cycling through several categories such as Pioneers, Madmen, Monsters, Technicians, Foreigners and several others (I'm not going to spoil it for you!). All of your favorite bad guys are found in the latest publication in the "Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame" series. Previous Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame books featured compelling stories about Canadian wrestlers, and Tag Teams - both highly recommended.
My personal favorite heel of all-time, The Sheik, did make it to the top twenty but did not place first as I would have prophesized; however the top twenty is a veritable who's who of wrestling villainy.

Some other Hall of Fame heels you can look forward to reading about are (in no particular order); Randy Savage, George "The Animal" Steel, Gorgeous George, Fred Blassie, Gorilla Monsoon, Eddie Gilbert, Nick Bockwinkel, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, The Iron Sheik, Jake "the Snake" Roberts, Ted DiBiase, Bad News Allen, JBL, Rick Rude, Bulldog Brower (featured on the cover photo), Johnny Valentine, Terry Funk and that is only the tip of the blood-soaked iceberg. There is a perfect blend of old school and new school incorporated into this book and there are several chapters covering some very obscure wrestlers, who nevertheless are deserving of a mention in this book. All the many heel philosophies are covered in this book, from guys who use fear to manipulate the audience, to the connivers who use their superior intellect to outsmart their opponents, to the guys who pride themselves on being bar-room brawl specialists - you really get a feel for the art of being a wrestling bad guy in, and sometimes out of, the squared circle. It's a fascinating journey that manages to maintain a positive twist despite the focus on debauchery that occurs within the professional wrestling realm.
The wrestling industry has always been build on the philosophy of good vs. evil - but the truth of the matter is one cannot survive without the other. To quote my old pal, Diamond Dallas Page (who is not featured in this book), that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing!

Reviewed by Brad Dykens of OnlineWorldofWrestling.comThe Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels (Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame series) OverviewAs the first comprehensive look at the ruffians, rascals, and rule breakers in the wrestling business, this history explains the rise of the wrestling villain, the reasons for his (or her) success, and the impact these sordid characters have had on the sport. Based on first-hand interviews with hundreds of wrestlers, managers, promoters, and historians, these entertaining profiles document wrestling's top rotten apples from the 1920s to today, providing plenty of support for the book's claim that fans love to hate the bad guys as much as they love to love the heroes. With remarkable candor, wrestling's troublemakers explain why they became villains and how they perceived and honed their roles; the sport is richer for the presence of the nefarious ones-and they know it. With more than 150 never-before-seen photos, this book will satisfy devoted fans and inspire everyone else to take a look at the exciting and often bizarre world of professional wrestling.

Beijing Welcomes You: Unveiling the Capital City of the Future ReviewJournalist Tom Scocca spent several years in Beijing prior to the 2008 Olympics and wrote about his observations in this book. He is a fairly good writer and parts of the book make for a moderately entertaining read. But he really doesn't tell us very much about Beijing that is interesting or surprising. Often, Scocca only seems to be scratching the surface of the events and people that he describes without getting at their deeper cultural and historical roots.
Many of Socca's observations are the kinds of things that any tourist who has been to Beijing would notice. He begins by telling us that the "first important fact to know about China is that it has a lot of Chinese people." No, really!?! And here I thought that the capitol city of the most populous nation in the world was virtually empty. He also spends a lot of time talking about the basic architecture of Beijing, pollution and other things that anybody who has spent even a short time in China would be familiar with.
I have nothing against Scocca. He didn't say anything that was outright wrong or offensive. But he doesn't quite have his finger on the pulse of Chinese society to the same degree that Peter Hessler (River Town, Oracle Bones, Country Driving) or, to a lesser degree, Robert Gifford (China Road) and Simon Winchester (The Man Who Loved China) do. If you want to read a journalistic account of social change in contemporary Chinese society I would recommend one of those books over Scocca's.
"Beijing Welcomes You" isn't a bad read. I wonder why Amazon made it a "Book of the Month" over Ezra Vogel's forthcoming biography of Deng Xiaoping and Aaron Friedberg's recent "A Contest for Supremacy," however. Both of these promise to be considerably more insightful and more likely to teach us something about China's rise that we didn't know already.Beijing Welcomes You: Unveiling the Capital City of the Future Overview

Collection of work
A collection of the best work from the late Ralph Wiley, this is not just a collection of his best work but also a look into the life and mind of one of the most influential African-American sports journalist. We see how Ralph Wiley responds to certain historical sports moments/ issues, such as minority owner ship, Mike Tyson and September 11.
Although this book is a collection of Wiley's greatest work it is much more than that. This book illustrates the unique writing style of Ralph Wiley. Wiley exemplifies a style that is brash and to the point yet not arrogant. He writes in a way that you respect his stand on issues even though you may not agree with it. One of Ralph Wiley's favorite sports to cover was boxing he was made famous by his articles in the Oakland Tribune about Roberto Duran's famous "No mas" and his depiction of fights like Leonard vs. Hearns II. Theses pieces are what sprang Wiley's name into the infamous Sports Illustrated which he was a writer for since the late 80's. After SI he continued to have success as a columnist for ESPN.com. The columns he wrote there were extremely personal. Columns such as WWJD (What Would Jackie Robinson Do), His response to the lack of African American ownership in the new millennium expressed his built up anger of major sports. Also his article Why We Need Sports Now sent a message to American people following the terrorist attack of 9/11.The book is excellent and a great book for any aspiring journalist.
Classic Wiley: A Lifetime of Punchers, Players, Punks and Prophets (Great American Sportswriters) OverviewThe definitive collection from the late Ralph Wiley-pioneering journalist, acclaimed author of Why Black People Tend to Shout, and a towering voice in the world of sportswriting hen Ralph Wiley, a columnist for ESPN.com and a former writer for Sports Illustrated, passed away on June 13, 2004, he left behind a rich legacy of written work. This volume brings together Wiley's best feature stories from Sports Illustrated, columns from ESPN.com, his 'Parting Shots' from the ESPN television show The Sports Reporters, and excerpts from his books and screenplays.

Flashing Before My Eyes: 50 Years of Headlines, Deadlines & Punchlines ReviewI was kind of put off by the two negative reviews from this site, then I decided to read the book anyways just because I have been a fan of Dick Schaap's for a long time.
I must say that the personal stories of his failed marriages was kind of off putting, but he seems to be poking fun at himself more than anything else. The book itself is incredible. This guy knew everybody. He was able to befriend just about everyone out there, whether they are in politics, sports, or anything else that matters. The stories are great, and the view points hilarious. Anyone can find fault in what anyone says. I find that the two reviewers who gave this book a negative review seems to be looking for something to pick on. The faults that they ascribe to the author may be valid, but they are also nitpicking. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has some time and want to read about a fascinating life spent conversing with some of the more interesting people in our society. So what if Schaap gloats a little or lamentsa his many marriages, he's entitled.Flashing Before My Eyes: 50 Years of Headlines, Deadlines & Punchlines Overview

Sir Walter: Walter Hagen and the Invention of Professional Golf ReviewThis is a wonderful book, and an important American chronicle as well. Noted editor, journalist and golf writer Tom Clavin has gone where few have in the past, finally providing us with a stylish and authoritative biography of the great Walter Hagen, and of that man's lasting impact on the sport, both domestically and on the international stage. In doing so, Clavin has restored "The Haig" to his rightful place in the pantheon of golfing greats and as the true pioneer of American professional golf.
For anyone even remotely interested in the royal and ancient game, this book is a must and a joy. But for anyone who simply loves a good read, and one about a compelling personality-in other words, the type of sportsman who transcends his sport-this is also a book certainly worth the time and entertainment value.
Clearly, Clavin has a certain affection for this subject, but he also brings the cool eye of the practiced reporter to the tale, separating the caricature of "Sir Walter" from the reality, telling the man's story less as the tale of myth and exaggeration (which Hagen fully contributed to himself) that grew up around him, and is still filtered down to the present day by less talented and thorough writers.
Indeed, Hagen was perhaps the most colorful character ever to play the game at such a high level, and was certainly friendly with the most dynamic personalities and revelers of his era, such as Al Jolson and Babe Ruth. But he was also a fierce competitor and the frequent winner against a host of future Hall of Fame golfers, such as Ted Ray, J.H. Taylor, George Duncan, Chick Evans, Jock Hutchison, "Long" Jim Barnes, and of course, Gene Sarazen and Bobby Jones.
The widely known image of Hagen as a womanizer and party animal, the famous stories of Hagen staggering onto the first tee from a limo in a rumpled tuxedo just in time to make his morning tee time, and of course, the essential spirit of the man who so famously said he didn't necessarily want to be a millionaire, but to live like one, are all here in Clavin's story. But they are also balanced with a more realistic account of how Hagen both enjoyed himself to the full, and yet also sometimes used his image to lull opponents into complacency, or actually hoodwink them. For the first time I know of, Clavin provides some evidence that Hagen did in fact occasionally get a good night's sleep before an important match, often poured his double whiskey into a flower pot when no one was looking, and, even more surprising, was a fiend about practicing his famous putting stroke.
The end result of this balanced reporting is that Hagen the man, and the golfer, are all the better for it. He emerges in Clavin's telling as a fuller and more sympathetic human being, though one hardly less compelling. In addition, we learn of the deep sorrows of his life, which included the heartbreaking loss of his favorite grandson, and of the day Hagen accidentally ran down a little boy with his car, which led to a lifelong hatred of driving. Imagine, the flamboyant Hagen, who rented Daimler limos at the British Open, and had often sported the latest wheels from Detroit, later becoming a nervous, doddering driver and passenger.
Hagen won 40 official PGA tournaments, including 11 professional majors (second only to Jack Nicklaus's 18) and four straight PGA championships (still a record) when that event was a grueling match play affair. Overall, Hagen won five PGA's, while also taking the U.S. Open twice, the British Open four times (the first native-born American to do so) and five Western Opens, when that event was widely considered a major. Hagen was also a stalwart on Ryder Cup teams for a decade, either as a player and/or captain. But the PGA's are what stand out. What further evidence is needed of how steely a competitor Hagen was, and how he ranks as the all-time master of the psychological game? Hagen won 22 straight 36-hole matches in that tournament over various years, and between 1921 and 1928, won 32 of 33.
Clavin should also be thanked for finally pulling "Sir Walter" out from the shadow cast down through the ages by Robert Tyre (Bobby) Jones, Jr., to whom Hagen often had to play second fiddle in the story of American golf. Of course, the "saintly" Jones supposedly played golf for love, rather than money, though Jones had the advantage of hailing from a secure, upper class background (his attorney father built a home alongside the famous East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta), whereas Hagen emerged from the hardscrabble life of a Rochester, N.Y. working class family. It should also be noted, as Clavin does in the first chapter of this book, when Jones and Hagen went head-to-head in an exhibition (Jones could not play in the PGA Championship since he retained his amateur status), Hagen thoroughly dusted his heavily favored opponent.
But the goodies don't stop with Hagen's story alone. This book is also a complete and fascinating chronicle of the early days of American golf, and how the present-day, multi-million dollar PGA Tour emerged from the almost single-handed efforts of Hagen. By sheer force of personality and dash, Hagen helped raised the status of early golf pros from near-servant level to the marquee stars they are today. Leaving a cushy job as a club pro in Michigan, Hagen hit the road, becoming the first American golfer to unabashedly play both for the love of the game, and the love of the money he could make with his considerable skills. Hagen also toured the planet, staging exhibitions and spreading the gospel of golf in Europe, Africa, Australia and Japan, while also lifting a few notes of currency from the natives who turned out in droves to see the famous man play. As Arnold Palmer, the other golfing great who emerged from humble origins to later reign as the "The King" in his era said at a banquet honoring Hagen: "If not for you, Walter, this dinner tonight would be downstairs in the pro shop, not in the ballroom."
Clavin also tells his story by treating us to interviews culled from some of Hagen's great contemporaries (in some cases among the last interviews with those legends) such as the late Gene Sarazen and Paul Runyon, along with appreciations from the Great Lord Byron Nelson, and perhaps the greatest of them all, Jack Nicklaus. Clavin also doesn't mind taking the occasional sidetrack if the telling of a rare anecdote is worth the time and delight to the reader. My favorite in this book concerns an early British amateur champion, who had often played at the famously difficult Prince's Golf Club (I know, since I've played it myself and lost a box of balls, along with two pros I was paired with!), which lies along the southern coast of England. During World War II, the golfer turned RAF pilot, was hit by German fire over the Continent and had to carefully nurse his Spitfire back over the Channel. Needing a sure place to land, he naturally steered toward fairways of Princes and brought down his craft near the 9th hole, though he ended up in the rough rather than the fairway. "I never could hit that fairway," he famously groused afterward. Another tale Clavin tells is of the American golfer who had calmed his nerves before a U.S. Open round with several drams of scotch, and then proceeded to butcher a 185-yard par 3 hole with a record score of 18.
What a delight! Sir Walter, we hardly knew ye...until now.Sir Walter: Walter Hagen and the Invention of Professional Golf Overview

Live Albom: The Best of Detroit Free Press Sports Columnist Mitch Albom ReviewBeing that I'm not much of a sports fan unless it's hockey, I wondered if I would be bored by this book. Quite the contrary! Mitch has the uncanny knack of drawing his readers in and making them feel as if they are part of the story. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion and wanted to cry after reading some selections. I found myself deeply interested in columns about sports I detest.
