Don't Let The Lipstick Fool You: The Making of a Champion ReviewEven as a non-fan of the WNBA, this story really hit home! LL's different, sometimes heartbreaking stories were really an eye-opener into the life of someone who is constantly facing opposition-- LL is a true inspiration!
I was appalled but utterly intrigued when she recollected the story about her own SISTER trying to steal Lisa's identity!
From an athletic role-model to a stunning fashionista, LL has been through it all and I'm glad that she joined forces with Larry Burnett to create a great read!Don't Let The Lipstick Fool You: The Making of a Champion OverviewA three-time Olympic gold medalist, three-time MVP of the WNBA, and the first woman ever to dunk in a professional basketball game, Lisa Leslie is considered one of the greatest players in the history of women's basketball. Now in her own words, she points the spotlight onto her remarkable life off the court, where being a confident champion was not always simple. As a child growing up in South Central Los Angeles, Lisa was timid, awkward, and over six feet tall in the sixth grade. Opponents challenged her, and she struggled to overcome self-imposed fears and limitations. But as her interest in basketball grew, she toughened both her game and her resolve. She also learned she could retain her femininity and throw a few elbows too. Still there was a nagging notion that girls--even tall girls and especially pretty ones - could not play well. At the same time, Lisa's home life, though loving, was unstable. Lisa never knew her father. Her mother worked as a traveling truck-driver to support the family, leaving Lisa to shuffle between relatives. Lisa's beloved older sister seemed only to torment her, harbor hidden jealousies, and would later go on to steal her identity and almost ruin her finances. And as a young woman, it would take two broken engagements before Lisa finally found the love of her life. Yet overcoming tremendous doubts are what paved the way to Lisa's greatest achievements--scoring 101 points in the first half of a high school basketball game; signing with Wilhelmina Models and appearing in Vogue magazine; and of course traveling the world and winning championship after championship...after championship. Today, Lisa is a beautiful, poised, assertive, six-foot-five-inch basketball powerhouse. Her elegance and charm have made her a favorite with fans, the fashion world, and even Hollywood. With hard-won candor and self-assurance, Lisa Leslie shares her empowering story about finding grace under pressure, balancing a life of contradiction without losing yourself, and exceeding expectations--including your own--by playing like a girl.

Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life ReviewThis revealing autobiography of slugger Hank Greenberg (1911-1986) makes for excellent reading. Greenberg was baseball's first Jewish superstar, a massive (6-4, 215 lbs), popular, intelligent player. Greenberg's immigrant parents disliked his decision to play baseball, but by the mid-1930's he was slugging the Detroit Tigers to pennants and his mother found herself a celebrity in her mostly-Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx. Greenberg's popularity probably reduced the amount of anti-Semitic abuse he faced - abuse that he often answered with his bat. Greenberg lost nearly five seasons to military service during World War II, and he left the game after 1947 to become a talented baseball executive and later an investment broker. All is described in these readable pages, along with Greenberg's views on famous controversies. Did opposing hurlers purposely walk him as he closed in on Babe Ruth's home run record in 1938? Was he unfairly drafted prior to Pearl Harbor? Should he play on major Jewish holidays? His answers ("no") are given at length. In his last year with Pittsburgh, Greenberg also encouraged a rookie named Jackie Robinson who faced similar but much greater abuse.
Greenberg was intelligent, dedicated, and surprisingly modest. He passed away before this book was finished, at which point journalist Ira Berkow filled in the gaps with interviews and anecdotes. This is an intelligent and readable biography about one of baseball's most impressive men.

Heart of Whiteness: Afrikaners Face Black Rule In the New South Africa ReviewAs an Afrikaner, I enjoyed this book because the authors allow their Afrikaner informants to tell their own story. The "voice" of the Afrikaner community (or at least, a segment thereof) is clearly heard in this book and is not drowned out by the authors' own narrative. In other words, reading the book, one learns more about the respondents and their everyday lived reality, than about the authors and their subjective perceptions (an approach that should typify any good ethnography). However, I was dismayed by the large number of factual errors, some trivial and some quite substantial. Afrikaans words in the text are often misspelled or used in an incorrect case and/or context. Afrikaner history also becomes rather truncated and overly defined in terms of 20th century events. The authors also exhibit an over-reliance on respondents who are theologists and/or theological academics. The political economy of Afrikaner Nationalism, and by extension Apartheid, does not get the attention it deserves. Apartheid was not primarily a religio-political phenomenon, even though religion was used at the level of discourse to explain, excuse, and justify the political system. More attention should be paid to the role of Afrikaner working class urbanization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
All in all, a worthwhile read for those outside Afrikanerdom wanting to gain a better understanding of some of its internal anxieties.Heart of Whiteness: Afrikaners Face Black Rule In the New South Africa Overview

Positively False: The Real Story of How I Won the Tour de France ReviewI am guessing that the people who gave Flyod the benefit of the doubt will ask for their money back now.
and please Amazon can this piece of garbage be moved into the fiction section. I really don't know why
anyone would believe a cyclist whenever he claims to be drug free.Positively False: The Real Story of How I Won the Tour de France OverviewTHE SERIES OF EVENTS surrounding Floyd Landis's 2006 Tour de France was as improbable as anything in the history of sports: He showed up nine seconds late for the race's opening prologue, donned the leader's yellow jersey twelve days later, and lost his lead only to regain it in remarkable fashion just before the Tour's final stage into Paris. Winning the Tour should have been the culmination of a life's dream, but a mere three days later, Landis was accused of using banned performance-enhancing drugs. Released by his team and threatened with the removal of his Tour title, Landis went from winning the most prestigious race of his career to being unfairly labeled as a cheater, a liar, and a doper.Positively False is at once a memoir and a powerful indictment of the unchecked governing bodies of cycling that have compromised theintegrity of the sport as a whole. From leaving the Mennonite community of his youth in order to pursue hispassion for cycling, to riding alongside Lance Armstrong for three years -- with whom he shared the same work ethic and competitive desire -- Floyd Landis details the highs and lows of his career with unabashed honesty. It is this samehonesty with which he will clear his name once and for all, as he lays bare the inner workings of the cycling world -- a place where athletes are subject to the antiquated science, flawed interpretive protocols, and draconian legal processes of the anti-doping agencies -- and finally lays to rest the scandal that threatened to destroy everything he's worked so hard to achieve....--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The Oath: A Surgeon Under Fire ReviewKhassan Baiev wrote absolutely amazing book about his life growing up in the former Soviet Union and later working as a surgeon under extremely harsh wartime conditions in the breakaway republic of Chechnya. His character represents the very best of such human qualities as integrity, compassion, and selfless devotion to duty, which contrast so sharply with all the ugliness of the violent armed conflict between Russia and Chechnya. His life is an extremely powerful story, and I am firmly convinced that his book should be displayed on the front shelves of all bookstores in America. Khassan Baiev's character represents what all of us should strive for - maybe then we have a chance to make our world a better place to live. The Oath: A Surgeon Under Fire Overview

Exploding Whale: And Other Remarkable Stories from ReviewPaul is a naturally funny guy, and now we know he can lay it out on paper, as well.
In this book he weaves memories from his career around, between, and through a serial narrative of his most famous story---the exploding whale of Florence, Oregon. Never heard of it? This event, along with the dynamite, the stench, the rain of blubber, and the resulting 'cover-up', established a comic standard for bureaucratic ineptitude. In his book, Paul answers all the questions and puts to rest the rumors, finally.
More important, this is an honest, insightful look inside television news as used to be, and as many us wish it had remained.
Paul shares as many laughs as nuggets of wisdom.Exploding Whale: And Other Remarkable Stories from OverviewThis lively and entertaining autobiography about the career of a television news reporter begins and ends with the one story he covered early in this career that just won't go away.

Veeck--As In Wreck: The Autobiography of Bill Veeck ReviewThe book takes you through the career of Bill Veeck, owner and operator of many baseball teams over a fifty-year period. If you truly love baseball, you want to read it.
Why? Easy enough--Bill loved baseball, so much so that he never sat in fancy box seats at games but preferred to join the fans in the bleachers. He is hilarious, as in sidesplitting; he has many stories to tell about the funnier incidents he's been involved in. And when you run a team Veeck style, you have a lot of funny incidents.
But the book is not just a compilation of Veeck buffoonery; he has strong feelings on many topics and expresses them with clarity and frankness. There are tributes to magnificent performances and courageous actions throughout the book. When you finish it, if you love the game, you wish only that you could have been an office staff person or groundskeeper following Bill through his career. You could never possibly have been bored (or made much money).
This book is in the class of _Ball Four_--a defining work that gives real insight into real baseball. To read it is to delight in the game.
As a partner, enough credit is not given Ed Linn. I don't know how Ed does it, but any book written with him will be entertaining, well written, and will above all preserve the main figure's personal style. I believe it is Ed's talent that takes the reminisces of sports figures and makes them a good read, and this deserves your appreciation and respect.Veeck--As In Wreck: The Autobiography of Bill Veeck OverviewBill Veeck was an inspired team builder, a consummate showman, and one of the greatest baseball men ever involved in the game. His classic autobiography, written with the talented sportswriter Ed Linn, is an uproarious book packed with information about the history of baseball and tales of players and owners, including some of the most entertaining stories in all of sports literature.

Women On Ice: Feminist Responses to the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan Spectacle Reviewthis collection of scholarly essays examines skating as a field by focusing on the events leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympics. The essays are thought-provoking, and cover a wide range of topics -- from the role of the media in creating a spectacle of women's bodies, to an essay on the prominent role of fairy tales and fantsy in skating. Highly recommended for skating fans and those interested in sports culture.Women On Ice: Feminist Responses to the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan Spectacle Overview

Personal History ReviewSince I grew up in a house where the "Washington Post" was devoured daily, I was always aware of Katherine Graham. I read this book shortly after she passed away, and I was knocked off my feet.
She was blessed by the accident of her birth into a family of extreme wealth and ultimate social position. Her family's advantages - sadly compounded by her husband's untimely death - gave her inumerable opportunities. At the same time, she was brilliant, capable, focused, and a gifted communicator. This combination of traits and circumstances allowed her to live a most enthralling, significant life.
Throughout, I marveled at her "realness." Her family had more money and servants and things than anyone I am ever likely to meet, but she describes her challenges, insecurities, and fears in a way that allow me to appreciate how she faced and succeeded in life.
This is a compelling read despite its length and detailed content. It is well documented and beautifully written - without the aid of a ghostwriter. It does not suffer from spurious melodrama, myopia, or vanity to which so many autobiographers fall victim.
I highly recommend both the form and substance of this book.
