Front-Page Pittsburgh: Two Hundred Years Of The Post-Gazette ReviewI'm not from Pittsburgh so some of this matter went over my head but I must say that Clarke Thomas is a smooth journalist of the old fashioned kind who believes that language's transparency can be used to convey information directly to the reader, without bias, without slanting. His history of The Pittsburgh Gazette is interesting because it parallels American history. Why, the Gazette was founded before the US Constitution was signed! It's hard to believe but people loved the news even back then, so much so that horses would deliver the paper on broadsides and it would be read on the village square and in pubs in the tiny hamlets of western Pennsylvania. Reading the progress of the paper over the years of the nineteenth century made me think of that movie THE VILLAGE, the recent film for which an old time village was fabricated in the woods outside Pittsburgh or wherever. The most intriguing characters were the Block family. For me, they were examples of courage because they dared press for integration, both subtly and openly, as the calendar moved from the 1930s through the 1940s and 1950s. Just as Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson and other enlightened figures in baseball gave us a glimpse into an integrated USA, Pittsburgh had its own quiet heroes.
Paul Block, the one who engineered the merger of the POST and the GAZETTE, had an intriguing career too! I have read many books on Hearst and Marion Davies, and never ran into the story which Mr. Thomas reports in this book--that Block and Davies were an item before she met Hearst, and that the three of them palled around together even after she took up with Hearst (one newsman after another for our favorite comedienne, Marion Davies)! It is an eye-opener for sure and presents an interesting sidelight on a much-discussed liaison. I hope that this book will soon produce a related sequel, perhaps one that will reprint the texts of the articles Thomas discusses. It would be great if we had the entire run of the Post-Gazette's coverage on, say, for example, favorite son Andy Warhol, and watch the paper deal with social and artistic changes over the decades.Front-Page Pittsburgh: Two Hundred Years Of The Post-Gazette Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Journalism ReviewI'd taken journalism courses in college and had experience in magazine writing and book writing, but after being hired for a newspaper, I wanted to brush up on my skill level, specifically powerful leads. I browsed this book initially just to remind myself of formatting (who, what, when, where, why), but by me being a Web Editor, I found the Internet chapter more interesting than the writing chapter, although the writing chapter was good. I ended up finishing this book after checking it out from the library and buying it to keep as reference material. It covers all areas of journalism: magazine, TV, newspaper, radio, and Internet. The glossary and the different top lists are excellent information to have onhand. The "Idiot's Guide" title may make people a little put off about reading it at first, but I think I'll try other "Idiot's Guide" books because if they're anywhere near as informative as this one, I'd like to see what else is out there.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Journalism OverviewBreaking news! Further, there are only a handfull of newspapers that attempt to provide a full story. During the reign of Joseph Pulitzer III, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was one of that handfull. Politically liberal, the paper prospered during the years that other newspapers were failing, merging or converting to tabloid style.
This biography of Joseph Pulitzer III covers his life, but his life was never far removed from the newspaper. This book presents the story of a man not seen so often. Trained by his father from birth to run the paper he had the problems of employees not liking his style, of friction within the rest of the family, and more. The Jim Murray Collection (Contemporary Sportswriters Series) ReviewI suppose his book is long out of print but it deserves your attention if you enjoy reading. Jim Murrays sports colomn graced the pages of the Los Angeles Times and became syndicated in an era of innocense, when life was less complex, gas was cheap, atheletes were paid a working salary, most houses were not yet six figures and affordable and people had time to read newspapers. His sports column was something any red blooded male looked forward to reading daily in Los Angeles. Writting is communication and Jim Murray communicated loud and clear, painting pictures with words like no other newspaper writer I ever read. He was the king of hyperbole, a master of prose that created evocative images, king of the one-liner and just a joy to read. This book is a collection of some of his finest articles presented in three segments. "Personally Speaking" are his personal observations with his wicked sense of humor and insightful imagery and at times even his scathing candor like when he opens the book speaking of golfs The Masters with the title "White as The Klu Klux Klan",."Portraits" is the second section dedicated to many of the top figures of sports in the 70's and 80's in LA and the national scene. He dissects such sports figures as Kareem Abdul Jabar, Maury Wills , Jim Gilliam, Jack Lambert, Lyle Alzado, Roger Stauback, Lee Alder and John McEnroe amongst others and concludes with "Fond Farewells" which were his graceful goodbyes to legendary figures. If you grew up in LA and if anything sports related was going on you always wanted to hear Jim Murrays take. This collection of short snippets from one of the best sports writers ever is outstanding. If you have never heard of him because you are younger and are interested in writting check him out as it wil be worth your time. End Run (The Drew Gavin mysteries) ReviewBrewer once again shows he knows how to titillate the reader with a wondrous menagerie of characters. His "bad guys" are fantastic. Not only are their personalities unique, but Brewer's ability to describe them so that they jump off the page at you is what sets him apart from so many mystery writers. And his protagonist, Drew Gavin, so much like Bubba Mabry in many ways, is a sympathetic character who somehow gets it right--despite his weaknesses and tendency to barge into all sorts of trouble. Foolish Is the Heart ReviewFoolish of the Heart is a refreshing tale written from a a man's prespective and was totally captivating novel. I look forward to Michael Embry's next novel and to read about the characters that only he can bring to life in a most rewarding way.
