Front-Page Pittsburgh: Two Hundred Years Of The Post-Gazette ReviewI'm not from Pittsburgh so some of this matter went over my head but I must say that Clarke Thomas is a smooth journalist of the old fashioned kind who believes that language's transparency can be used to convey information directly to the reader, without bias, without slanting. His history of The Pittsburgh Gazette is interesting because it parallels American history. Why, the Gazette was founded before the US Constitution was signed! It's hard to believe but people loved the news even back then, so much so that horses would deliver the paper on broadsides and it would be read on the village square and in pubs in the tiny hamlets of western Pennsylvania. Reading the progress of the paper over the years of the nineteenth century made me think of that movie THE VILLAGE, the recent film for which an old time village was fabricated in the woods outside Pittsburgh or wherever. The most intriguing characters were the Block family. For me, they were examples of courage because they dared press for integration, both subtly and openly, as the calendar moved from the 1930s through the 1940s and 1950s. Just as Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson and other enlightened figures in baseball gave us a glimpse into an integrated USA, Pittsburgh had its own quiet heroes.
Paul Block, the one who engineered the merger of the POST and the GAZETTE, had an intriguing career too! I have read many books on Hearst and Marion Davies, and never ran into the story which Mr. Thomas reports in this book--that Block and Davies were an item before she met Hearst, and that the three of them palled around together even after she took up with Hearst (one newsman after another for our favorite comedienne, Marion Davies)! It is an eye-opener for sure and presents an interesting sidelight on a much-discussed liaison. I hope that this book will soon produce a related sequel, perhaps one that will reprint the texts of the articles Thomas discusses. It would be great if we had the entire run of the Post-Gazette's coverage on, say, for example, favorite son Andy Warhol, and watch the paper deal with social and artistic changes over the decades.Front-Page Pittsburgh: Two Hundred Years Of The Post-Gazette Overview
Clarke Thomas has compiled a two-hundred-year history of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the first paper published west of the Alleghenies. From the Whiskey Rebellion to the present, the stories the paper covered reveal the history of Pittsburgh and the people who live there.

Land of Amber Waters: The History of Brewing in Minnesota ReviewThis is clearly the most authoritative book on Minnesota brewing history that could be written. The author's research is thorough and meticulous; his writing is clear and to the point; the photographs alone are worth the price of the book.Land of Amber Waters: The History of Brewing in Minnesota Overview"A heartfelt paean to the pioneering breweries of the Midwest, packed with details and excellent photos. Land of Amber Waters is sure to delight anyone interested in the storied history of American brewing." —Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster of The Brooklyn Brewery, and author of The Brewmaster's Table

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza." —Dave Barry

For centuries, brewmasters both professional and homegrown have pursued the perfect pour—a delectable combination of barley, yeast, water, and hops—and few states can claim as devoted a relationship to beer as Minnesota. For a time it seemed that every town had its brewery and a beer garden was a highlight of every local celebration. Dedicated home brewers and casual pub crawlers alike will be amazed by the stories of Minnesota beers and breweries featured in Land of Amber Waters.

Starting with the first brewery in 1849, Doug Hoverson tells the story of the state's beer industry from the small-town breweries that gave way to larger companies with regional and national prominence, including Hamm's, Grain Belt, and Schell's, to the vibrant beer culture of today, led by a new wave of breweries such as Summit, Lake Superior Brewing Co., and Surly, and brewpubs like Town Hall Brewery, Fitger's, and Granite City Brewpub, and sustained by microbreweries, home brewers, and beer aficionados.

From the first illegal brewer at Fort Snelling to the craft brewers and major companies of today, nearly 300 breweries have opened and operated at one time or another in 125 cities and towns around the state. Complete with a comprehensive list of Minnesota's breweries—including many never before published—and more than 300 tempting illustrations of beer and breweriana, Land of Amber Waters marvelously chronicles Minnesota's rich brewing traditions.

Doug Hoverson teaches social studies and coaches the debate team at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. He is the assistant editor of American Breweriana Journal, an award-winning homebrewer, and a certified beer judge.

Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered War, Peace, and Everything Else Review"Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered War, Peace, and Everything Else," by Reporters of the Associated Press, Princeton Architectural Press, New York, 2007. This is a very nicely done coffee table book telling mostly how news has been reported by the Associated Press over its history since about 1850. The book includes many first rate, quality photographs, often famous ones related to major stories. It also includes photo reproductions of telegrams and teletypes reporting famous news stories such as Lincoln's assassination, and even 9/11.
A section includes a glossary of wire service terms. We learn that AP's main national newswire is known as the A-wire, which is controlled from New York City. There is also an F-wire, which carries financial news, presumably in competition with the Dow Jones Broad Ticker and the Bloomberg News Service. There is also a Sports Wire, which carries sports news, and one suspects there are numerous regional wires, and probably international wires covering the news at various levels. We learn that for many years Reuters stories have been distributed in the US by the AP and Associated Press stories have been distributed in Europe by Reuters. The famous lead or "lede" is the first paragraph of the story intended to grab the reader's attention. A newsflash is a news alert of immediate importance. Though rarely sent by AP two were sent within two hours on 9/11. Five bells is the signal from the teletype alerting of incoming news usually a flash or bulletin. A bulletin is a major breaking news story; an urgent heading indicates an important story not quite of bulletin caliber.
Section titles gives some idea of the content. They are War I, Trials, Freedom of Information, Aviation, Sports, Elections, Civil Rights, War I I, Foreign Correspondents, Photographs, Disasters, and the White House.
The news business includes its share of blunders. Several famous ones are described. Shortly after the Union victory at Gettysburg, a spoof message was sent to New York papers announcing that Grant was giving up his Wilderness Campaign and Lincoln had declared "a national day of fasting, humiliation, and prayer." Most papers immediately recognized the story as false, but two published it.
At the end of World War I, United Press, a competitor, announced that the armistice had been signed on November 7 - 4 days before the event actually occurred. At the Lindbergh kidnapping trial in Flemington NJ, on September 20, 1934, AP had developed an elaborate code to signal the terms of the jury verdict before competitors could leave the courtroom. Confusion resulted in a misunderstood code and a false flash, announcing a verdict had been reached "guilty and life" rather than "guilty with the death sentence." As a result, AP fired one man, suspended another, and demoted a third.
To get ready for deadline, news stories are often written ahead with the name of the winner inserted at the last minute. In AP lingo, "Will Overhead" was a fill name for the winner to be sent by "overhead wire" later. At least once, a newspaper staffed by inexperienced personnel managed to publish Will Overhead in a headline as the winner of an event.
The addition of photographs to the AP wire service was an important development. In 1926 American Telephone & Telegraph Co. began commercial picture transmissions between major US cities. The pictures were of rather low quality, but Associated Press began using that service in 1928. However, AT&T discontinued their service in 1933 finding that the business was not profitable. AP began its Wirephoto service on January 1, 1935, with 47 newspapers in 25 states.
In March, 1959, China took over Tibet and forced the Dalai Lama to flee to India. AP and UPI were in competition to get a photo of the Dalai Lama sent by radio photo to newspapers around the globe. UPI won by almost 57 minutes, but they misidentified the man in the photo. Their photo was cropped and identified the Indian Foreign Ministry's press spokesman as the Dalai Lama. The AP photo came later, but with correct identification. The AP creed is timely, accurate, and unbiased.
The appendix includes a brief history of the Associated Press. According to the summary, news has always been highly competitive with papers using various means to get the story first. Originally it was a matter of racing horses, using carrier pigeons or whatever to get the story there a day sooner. Major stories often took a week to get to eastern newspapers. The telegraph changed all that. Now stories could be delivered to the paper within hours. The Associated Press grew out of coverage by competing New York City newspapers of the Mexican War in April, 1846. They realized they were duplicating efforts, and instead decided to cooperate and share the news stories from afar. Initially the news went only to the New York City newspapers. Only later did they agree to supply the news to outlet's across the country in return for fees.
For years, the Associated Press was "the" news service. By arrangement with Western Union, the telegraph company agreed to carry AP news reports exclusively so long as the news service spoke kindly of Western Union. In addition, any subscriber to the AP service could block any competing newspaper's participation in the service. Since there were few other telegraph companies that effectively meant no alternative. That is quite unlike today's networks when NBC and CBS, and later ABC, Fox, and CNN, provide competing services. In the heyday of AP and Western Union the combination told the Republican view and were said not to transmit the position of the other side.
A problem with the history summary is that the story of the beginning of the wire services told by AP differs somewhat from that told by Alexander Jones in his "Historical Sketch of the Electric Telegraph." According to Jones, telegraph companies formed news departments to report commodity pricing of materials like flour and grain in cities along the telegraph lines. How these services were ultimately combined with those of AP is not clear. However, AP admits that its early records are fragmentary.
The appendix includes a list of AP General Agents, General Managers, and CEOs dating back to 1849 as well as the locations of the Associated Press offices in New York City back to 1849. The volume includes extensive endnotes and is well indexed.
Overall, this book is very well done. Readers will appreciate its highly professional presentation. They will be reminded of moments in history, and they will find it informative and entertaining.Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered War, Peace, and Everything Else Overview

Personal History ReviewSince I grew up in a house where the "Washington Post" was devoured daily, I was always aware of Katherine Graham. I read this book shortly after she passed away, and I was knocked off my feet.
She was blessed by the accident of her birth into a family of extreme wealth and ultimate social position. Her family's advantages - sadly compounded by her husband's untimely death - gave her inumerable opportunities. At the same time, she was brilliant, capable, focused, and a gifted communicator. This combination of traits and circumstances allowed her to live a most enthralling, significant life.
Throughout, I marveled at her "realness." Her family had more money and servants and things than anyone I am ever likely to meet, but she describes her challenges, insecurities, and fears in a way that allow me to appreciate how she faced and succeeded in life.
This is a compelling read despite its length and detailed content. It is well documented and beautifully written - without the aid of a ghostwriter. It does not suffer from spurious melodrama, myopia, or vanity to which so many autobiographers fall victim.
I highly recommend both the form and substance of this book.

Sports Broadcasting ReviewBrad Schultz has done a commendable job on providing direction for people seeking a career in sports journalism. This book is thorough in covering the material. The opening chapters include background on the history of broadcasting itself, while later sections focus more on the theme of the book, sports broadcasting. It concludes with profiles of successful sports journalists who created the paradigm in place today, and the very last chapter takes a look at the future through the eyes of the commissioners of the professional sports leagues.
Schultz's writing style is easy to follow. In fact, he practices what he advocates, i.e., basic writing skills come from effective readers. You can tell from his work that he is well-read. He includes the international, national, and local career options in his discussion. Historically he lists what he considers to be milestones in the development of the profession in the United States. I highly recommend this book. It is well-researched and comprehensive.Sports Broadcasting OverviewA uniquely comprehensive text, Sports Broadcasting emphasizes the skills that students will need in order to be successful in the industry. Sports and Entertainment Marketing ReviewI was in Ken Kaser's marketing class for two years and i can honestly say with utmost certainty that Mr. Kaser's sports marketing book is the greatest, most compelling story of human drama and intrigue that i have ever read. It is a poignant and touching journey into the human psyche and inded the very nature of man. Through his stunning portrayal of the book's main character (a Jewish man named Trey), Kaser delves into the relms of intelectual enlightenment and human sexuality. While many subjects are explored through the main character's search for the meaning of life, he ultimately confronts the eternal questions of existence such as "Why am i here?", and "Why is Tenney such a bastard?". This book is a life changing epic full of all the things that make great literature great. Ken Kaser has given the world a gift it will appreciate forever and he will go down in history as the greatest writer in the English language. I give it 5 stars.Sports and Entertainment Marketing OverviewSPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING 3E continues to use sports and entertainment topics as the foundation for teaching marketing concepts. Each marketing function is incorporated throughout the text and is highlighted with an icon to indicate how it is used in the marketing process.

Advanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing ReviewAs someone who had done sport marketing for over 15 years - from almost every angle and across the spectrum of sports from the Olympics to MLB, I initially thought I'd be one of the better suited to review this book.
However, keeping in mind this was written for undergraduates, I found it wasn't what I expected. I expected a book that was written for people having at least a basic understanding of marketing and business principles (e.g. if in school, they would have taken an entry-level marketing and business principles class.)
But, this is a marketing 101 textbook for those that have had no previous marketing/business management education. It defines sport marketing as the marketing of any sport related product - from health drinks and branded t-shirts to ticket packages and sports-related retailers. Then, it hits the highlights of just about every major aspect of marketing & business management - planning, positioning, sales organizations, research, advertising, promotion, product life cycle, decision making, retail management, supply chain, merchandising, ethics, etc., etc., etc.
In deference to the title, four things occur: 1) In descriptions, the word "sport" is placed in front of marketing, even though it would be just as applicable without it, 2) Examples and case studies are drawn from the sports world, and 3)"From Theory to Practice" insets offer a quick look from someone in the industry with descriptions of their jobs and tips for entry-level positions, 4) Finally, it gives a better look at sponsorships than most other basic texts.

For professors. there's online powerpoint presentations and quizzes to support. Bottom Line: I can't help thinking students that might never be exposed to basic Marketing or Business Management principles could very well be attracted to a class called "Sport Marketing", and would learn from this text. On the other hand, if you know the basics and want a really advanced look at Sport Marketing, I'd suggest picking something more targeted to your specific sport marketing needs or interests to get a truly "Advanced Theory and Practice" education.
Advanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing OverviewAdvanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing is the first book to address this increasingly popular subject at an advanced level. Where existing sport marketing texts restate concepts learned at an introductory marketing level, this book goes beyond, by expanding the knowledge of the student with advanced marketing theory which is specifically related to the crucial areas in sport marketing.Advanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing is vital reading for any sport marketing student wishing to progress their knowledge and take their understanding of the industry to the next level.*Practitioner interviews accompanying every chapter, teaming practical advice with high-level sports marketing theory* A clear structure where each chapter includes chapter outlines, chapter objectives, a glossary and ethical and global case studies for illustrative and informative real-world understanding* PowerPoint slides and an electronic test bank available online to accelerate learning* An analysis of advanced topics untouched by existing publications such as data analysis, sportmarketing information systems, sport marketing logistics and more

Sports Media, Second Edition: Reporting, Producing, and Planning ReviewI am a Professor at Valparaiso University and will be adopting Sports Media as the new textbook for our Sports Journalism class. Many people think of a Sports Journalism class as an easy A or a blowoff class and this book helps dispel those notions right off the bat. Former textbooks we've used were almost cartoonish and went along with the aforementioned perceptions.
In Sports Media, Schultz makes it a point to educate without fluff. Absent from this book are long biographies about famous sports broadcasters that can be found on the Internet, and it it's place is dedication to the Internet itself as a sports medium.
The first chapters discuss Reporting and the difference in how to do it between Print and Broadcast as well as the Internet. Then the book goes into the Visualizaton of sports. Most anchors that start out in small markets will be shooting their own stories as well as editing them and the book discusses techniques and includes a CD-ROM.
Other important topics covered that other texts have not are the Ethics of reporting, the Economics and how to work with Media Relations.
The final chapter could be the most important as it discusses how to get a job. This is the goal for college students and the text provides excellent advice.
I recommend the book for Professors as well as anyone who wants a better knowledge in not just sports broadcasting, but all parts of sports media.Sports Media, Second Edition: Reporting, Producing, and Planning OverviewA uniquely comprehensive text, Sports Media emphasizes the skills that you will need in order to be successful in the industry. With extensive coverage on reporting, anchoring, and production, this text offers thorough and effective descriptions of the sports reporter and anchor's function in a broadcast environment.Going beyond the essential skills, Sports Media also offers important historical and interesting background on the evolution of the sports industry, some grounding in the business of sports, and a discussion of social issues including the experience of women in sports and sports broadcasting.Covering all aspects of sports broadcasting, this text features reporting, writing leads, style, tricks of the trade, shooting on location, editing, production, live event production, ethics, and resume tapes, as well as tips on seeking employment in the industry. This new second edition focuses on the special new demands and necessary skill you will need for today's converged media - print, broadcast, and digital.* Details the skills you'll need to get work* Valuable tips relevant to today's print-broadcast-Internet media environments * Explains practical, working approaches to behind-the-scenes jobs: producers, layout artists, and website managers

Morning Miracle: Inside the Washington Post A Great Newspaper Fights for Its Life ReviewDave Kindred's THE MORNING MIRACLE doesn't compare with Gay Talese's THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER, and isn't even the best book on the Washington Post (Katharine Graham's PERSONAL HISTORY), but it is a first-rate account of a venerable institution struggling to survive in the 21st century. The heroes are Post writers Dana Priest, Annie Hull, Anthony Shadid, Sally Jenkins and Gene Weingarten, individuals who see journalism more as a calling than a career. Walter Pincus is the old truth-telling prophet. Len Downie is revered as the near perfect editor. Ben Bradlee is almost made to walk on water. And yet, despite such talent, the Post is losing money on newsprint and the direction forward is murky, so much so that one Post writer suggests Kindred's title should be DYING WITH DIGNITY.
As Kindred focuses the story on the period of time between 2005-2008, the staff knows that beloved publisher, Don Graham, will do anything to keep the print side of the paper afloat. But, in seeing his personal (a divorce settlement) and professional (age) life slipping away, he believes that the only hope is to turn to youth for leadership, particularly niece Katharine Weymouth. Understanding the business side of the Post, and more aware of the importance of its online future, Weymouth is the logical successor. But, Kindred is not placated with the choice. He finds her oblivious to the decline of the quality of the Post as the staff shrinks through forced buyouts. And, worse still, he knows that she has no ear for words, no sense of the history of print. She quotes Metro Columnist Marc Fisher as putting forth the Post's objective in a tidy fashion when he writes it is "to speak truth to power, to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." Kindred's scorching reaction, "The words were written by Finley Peter Dunne almost a century ago. Old news to people who know newspapers." But, such tough talk belies the reality that without Weymouth's bottom line agressiveness, the Post might fold altogether like the Seatlle Post-Intelligencer or the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. Kindred grudgingly knows that the Post must adapt or die.
Weingarten turns out to be Kindred's sage. He pinpoints the critical difference between reading a newspaper and something online. With a newspaper, you never read what you think you will. You see different headlines and pictures and end up reading somethng you otherwise would have bypassed. Online, you pick out what you read. You confirm what you already know and you never expand.
Weingarten also provides the most laugh out loud moments in the book, such as when making a graduation speech to journalism majors and telling them that the business is changing so radically that it is hard to tell what future journalists will look like. Weingarten exclaims, "I mean literally. For all we know, they might have gills and three buttocks. That's how fast things are changing. But rest assured that, however dizzying the rate of change, when what's at stake is the sacred art of truth-telling, there is always one constant. One thing that will always be the same: Your editor is going to be an idiot."
In the end, Kindred concludes that the Post will no longer be the paper of excellence that the Grahams, Bradlee and Downie created anymore than today's world can be the same as the world of a generation past. But, he does take comfort that there will always be journalists who love to get the story right and won't rest until they do.
For those who love words, and print, and might even still walk out into their driveway every morning to pick up the Post, this is a great book to read.Morning Miracle: Inside the Washington Post A Great Newspaper Fights for Its Life Overview
