Inside the Postal Bus: My Ride with Lance Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Cycling Team Review*Note I wish I could have given this book 2.5 stars*
I so wanted to like this book. As a cycling junkie since 1985, I have tried to get my hands on anything that involves European cycling. Especially first hand accounts of the European peloton. (peloton = main group or pack in a race)
I just finished Michael's book and to be honest, I was disappointed. It's not a bad read but the title of the book is a little misleading:
Inside the Postal Bus my ride with Lance Armstrong and the US Postal Cycling Team.
Now if George Hincapie or Floyd Landis had written this book, you might have gotten a more intimate picture of Lance Armstrong. But Michael usually rode for Postal's "B" team so I wasn't too shocked or disappointed that there wasn't too much material on Lance.
That being said, this was supposed to be a book about the Postal Bus and what goes on in it.
There were glimpses of what goes on in the bus and the team but Michael never goes very deep.
Maybe I'm too hard-core but I felt like he never really tells us anything about the races or the racers.
I wanted to read a few funny stories. Heck any stories. Stuff that the general public never gets to see. The closest he comes is when he and Dave Zabriske are in an elevator and they see a famous French cyclist and make fun of the fact that he has a mullet.
Unfortunately, the best and most revealing passage is not written by Michael but is in fact written by George Hincapie.
George tells us how he told Lance how much he respected and admired his gutsy performance after Lance had had a rough time trial during the 2003 Tour.
Lance said that he was touched by George's words. It was a great passage. And not for the fact that it involved Lance but because it showed the human side of the cyclists. If only the book was filled with stories like that. Whoa!
I wish he would have talked more about how hard it is to make the postal tour team.
And on how disappointed he was of not going and having to watch the tour on TV. (He had to have been disappointed it's every cyclist's dream to ride the tour. I know it was mine and when I raced I sucked).
Give us some emotion please. (If Michael was on a lesser team, I'm convinced he could be a tour rider - yes he's that good.) But we don't get anything.
If you want a more entertaining look at cycling in the European peloton, read Bob Roll's first book Bobke: A ride on the wild side of cycling. The only unfortunate thing is that it's from a different era. But it's funny. Hilarious in fact.
VELOPRESS had a golden opportunity to get an inside look at one of the greatest cycling teams ever (and not just becuase of Lance i.e. Bruyneel, Ekimov, Heras, et all)
But instead of getting inside the bus we get thrown under it.Inside the Postal Bus: My Ride with Lance Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Cycling Team OverviewDuring the professional cycling season, the members of the United States Postal Team live, train, and work together for weeks on end while traveling to competitions throughout Europe. With wit and singular insight, Michael Barry, a professional cyclist and member of the United States Postal Team, shares his first-hand knowledge of the sport and of his fellow cyclists, describing intricate pre-race orchestrations; the efforts of the coach, mechanics, team chef, and other staff members; the personalities and idiosyncrasies of his international teammates, including six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong; and the thrilling races themselves.

The Spring Classics: Cycling's Greatest One-Day Races ReviewFor the cycling and history enthusiast this is one of the most entertaining books on the the history of the sport..
Beautiful photography worth every penny......The Spring Classics: Cycling's Greatest One-Day Races Overview
Cycling's spring races are always the most anticipated of the year, not only because they herald the start of the season, but also because they are brutally difficult and spectacularly unpredictable. Known as the Spring Classics, these one-day races test cycling's toughest riders with the worst conditions imaginable—sucking mud, choking dust, leg-numbing sleet, fanatic spectators, and Europe's narrowest, most bone-grinding country roads. Clattering through agrarian hamlets on routes established a century ago, the Spring Classics celebrate cycling's most glorious and meaningful history. Riders that perform well amidst the intensity of these one-day races are acclaimed as cycling's "hard men."

The Spring Classics delves into the stories of Milan-San Remo, Ghent-Wevelgem, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, the Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallone, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège through hundreds of rare and restored photographs presented in a lavish format. With authoritative text from cycling's expert sportswriters, The Spring Classics commemorates the riders, traditions, and secrets of cycling's greatest one-day contests.

John Wilcockson's World of Cycling ReviewReview of "John Wilcockson's World of Cycling" from Boulder Planet, Colorado
by Rob Coppolillo
Thirty Tours de France sounds like a long career in cycling, but Boulderite and world-renowned journalist John Wilcockson finds his best form in his sixth and latest book, John Wilcockson's World of Cycling. On the verge of another hectic season of travel and race coverage, the prolific writer will cover his thirtieth Tour this summer and has reported on every major road cycling event, mountain biking and track racing in a career dating from the mid-Sixties. The English-born Wilcockson was a successful amateur cyclist as a young man, then found a comfortable career in civil engineering. When he chose to pursue a life covering bike racing, he says, "My family was shocked, they thought I was crazy! I had prospects of a good career in engineering, but I can't say I've had a dull day in 30 years." Whatever prospects he left in engineering, he has seems to have equaled in his writing. He has covered cycling for the London Times, the Sunday Times in London, Winning, several other English publications and now co-owns a magazine based in Boulder, VeloNews. Sports journalism, as a genre, sometimes conceals the extent of a writer's quality. With deadlines, space constraints and a narrower audience, the final product loses a measure of breadth. Wilcockson's World of Cycling will surprise his fans expecting mere reportage. The work is as much travel writing as journalism, showcasing the depth of Wilcockson's talent and his keen eye for detail. "I'm a travel buff in many ways...I walk around places to see more than meets the eye. That's one of the fun things about cycling, it's not a stadium sport. The geography, the climate, these guys are racing in the elements," he explains. Early in the book, in a charming description of the 1969 Tour of Sardinia, we are treated to the particulars of the bicycle race, but the event doesn't end at the finish line. As Wilcockson departs the island on a ferry, he recalls, "...a black-clad mamma...was arguing-as only Italians can...Then the scene rapidly became quiet, dark and deserted...the final zephyr blowing the dockside clean, sending an odd newspaper and dust swirling into the cold, black water." World of Cycling covers nearly every facet of bicycle racing, from the Olympic road race, to the Tour de France, a six-day track event and mountain bike world championships. Loyal Wilcockson readers will devour his authoritative race accounts, as usual, but discover widely expanded coverage. Any cycling fan remembers five-time Tour de France champion, Spaniard Miguel Indurain falling apart in 1996 Tour and it's here, only more of it, clearly chronicled kilometer by kilometer! Racers will also find lesser-known stories like Robert Millar's heart-breaking defeat in the 1985 Tour of Spain. The Scotsman Millar lost not because he faltered physically, but through the reproachable collusion of the Spanish teams in the race. No other English speaking journalist, and few in Europe, can capture and explain the subtlety and nuance of a bike race like Wilcockson. World of Cycling preserves the excitement, but adds details that might not otherwise escape the editor's cut of a race report. "I think for most journalists writing about cycling, it's a job, not a passion," he alleges. "It's more like writing about football or baseball in this country." His awareness of the nearly unseen forces at play in a race reveals Wilcockson's knowledge and love of the sport. In "Home is Our Hero," an account of the 1985 Nissan International Cycling Classic in Ireland, Wilcockson poetically describes the victory of native Sean Kelly, transporting readers to the lush, rural countryside, "The break's lead mounted...to 90 seconds at pretty Clonegall, where a farmer with a small white dog tucked inside his jacket were among the spectators watching the racers pour over a stone, hump-backed bridge spanning a fast-flowing salmon stream." There is no more respected cycling journalist working today, and with John Wilcockson's World of Cycling, Wilcockson leaves the realm of mere sport to script his name alongside the best adventure travel writers of our time like Theroux, Cahill and Krakauer. His unequaled descriptions of bicycle racing, coupled with his acute sense of place and sharp eye, make this a captivating read for not only cycling fans, but travelers, armchair adventurers and sports fans alike.John Wilcockson's World of Cycling OverviewJohn Wilcockson hasn't missed a Tour de France or other major bicycle race since 1968. This round-the-world excursion to the most challenging cycling events brings together more than 20 of his favorite stories, including the dramatic victories of Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong.

Bicycle History: A Chronological Cycling History of People, Races, and Technology ReviewIf you love cycling, you will love this book. If you have ever spent hours in a library or on the internet trying to find some obscure cycling factoid, then you must buy this book. It is awesome.Bicycle History: A Chronological Cycling History of People, Races, and Technology OverviewSince its invention in the 1860s, the bicycle has had a fascinating history. Author James Witherell has spent years collecting the essential, the trivial and sometimes just downright odd facts that make up the story of the bicycle. Instead of composing a narrative history, he's arranged them in chronological order, painting an informative, fun and irresistible picture of what might be mankind's greatest invention. Witherell has given special emphasis to the Tour de France.

Hell on Two Wheels: An Astonishing Story of Suffering, Triumph, and the Most Extreme Endurance Race in the World ReviewMany of us are fans of the Race Across America (RAAM). Some of us actually compete, while most do it vicariously, through reading daily reports, on-the-scene updates, and wrap-up stories after the race is over. Many of these stories have been excellent when it comes to learning who won and lost, the margin of victory, as well as some good information about one particular racer or team. But what has been missing is a report that covers more than one rider or team, that gives intimate details regarding not only the events during the race, but before and after as well. That void has been filled by Amy Snyder's Hell On Two Wheels (Triumph Books, 2011).
When I read through the book, I kept thinking: this is what's been missing! Often I've wondered about other riders, other teams, how did they handle the deserts, did they have problems with the mountains in West Virginia, what was the mood of the riders and crews when they could "smell the barn" as they entered Maryland. This book answers many of those questions in the 2009 running of RAAM. Many of the names will be familiar, and this book will flesh out our knowledge with information that is both fascinating and disturbing. The name of the book describes the race, the ordeal that RAAM is, in a way that would make most of us put any Walter Mitty aspirations out of our heads.
Amy Snyder is an accomplished racer in her own right. She knows what it's like to give everything you've got, and more. After reading her book, you'll have gained some insight into just what these men and women go through in their 3000+ miles race across the US. Buy this book - you will enjoy it.Hell on Two Wheels: An Astonishing Story of Suffering, Triumph, and the Most Extreme Endurance Race in the World OverviewThis is a stunning inside account of what it's like to take part in one of the most epic endurance sport events in the world. RAAM - The Race Across America - is a bicycle race like no other. This epic contest is the most brutal organized sporting event you've never heard of and one of the best-kept secrets in the sports world. Contestants have died, been injured, even descended into the realms of madness. Half of them don't finish - in fact, only 200 racers have ever made it to the end of the 3,000 mile, 12-day course. "Hell on Two Wheels" is a thrilling and remarkably detailed account that follows a group of athletes before, during, and after the 2009 race. By experiencing the race from the perspective of the racers themselves, "Hell on Two Wheels" breaks new ground in helping us appreciate how such a grueling effort can be so cleansing and self-revelatory. This is more than just a race - it's an unforgettable allegory about the human experience of pain and joy and self-discovery.

Campagnolo: 75 Years of Cycling Passion ReviewIn conjunction with the manufacturers' 75th Anniversary, Velo Press recently released the book Campagnolo: 75 Years of Cycling Passion. Whether you are a member of the Campy cult, a user of their components or a fan of cycling history, this book is worth a read.
Written by long time Italian cycling journalists Paolo Facchinetti and Guido P. Rubino, the book starts with the birth of the bicycle itself and its growing popularity in Europe, but quickly moves to the fateful Fall 1927 day on the Croce d'Aune when a young racer named Tullio Campagnolo struggled to change the gearing on his racing bike with nearly frozen hands. Out of his frustration came first the quick release axles that we all use today, and eventually, a gear changer that allowed a racer to change gears without dismounting the bike.
Tullio Campagnolo grew up poor, but was fortunate to grow up in a home where he had access to files, pliers, anvils, vise grips and hammers, as well as a small blacksmith forge. It was there that he learned the skills that would serve him in prototyping, building and improving bicycle components.
The first quick release appeared in 1930, and Campagnolo filed the first of his 185 patents for a system he called "gearing for cycling." He attended as many races as he could, showing his quick release and gearing system to racers and mechanics alike and listening, improving and promoting some more.
Along the way, Campagnolo saw his components used by such racing greats as Vito Ortelli, Toni Bevilacqua, Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Fiorenzo Magni, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Greg Lemond, Laurent Fignon, Miguel Indurain, Marco Pantani, Paolo Bettini and Danilo Di Luca, and the Campagnolo name became synonymous with cycling.
The early beginnings and Campagnolo's passion for cycling and for continuous improvement lead us to where we are 75 year later, with the introduction of the new 11-speed Super Record group.
Some Campagnolo cultists have said that there are some notable omissions in this book, but I still found it very entertaining and educational. The illustrations and photography are top notch as well.
If you love cycling, this book should have a place in your library.

Team 7-Eleven: How an Unsung Band of American Cyclists Took on the World - and Won ReviewA great insight into the genius of Ochowitz. After reading this, it's no surprise in seeing how he's built BMC to what it was this year and what it will be next year.Team 7-Eleven: How an Unsung Band of American Cyclists Took on the World - and Won Overview
7-Eleven: America's Greatest Cycling Team is the first book to tell the full story of America's first and greatest pro cycling team. Founded in 1981 by Jim Ochowicz and Olympic medalist Eric Heiden and sponsored by the 7-Eleven chain of convenience stores, the team rounded up the best amateur cyclists in North America and formed them into a cohesive, European-style cycling team. As amateurs, they dominated the American race scene and won seven medals at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. As professionals, beginning in 1985, the team went to Europe and soon received invitations to the Tour of Italy and then the Tour de France, putting Americans on the podium in landmark victories that would change the face of American cycling forever. Prepared with the enthusiastic cooperation of the team members and co-authored by the team's founder, Jim Ochowicz, 7-Eleven is not only the most important missing piece in the story of American cycling, but the book that American cyclists have been waiting for ever since the 7-Eleven cowboys snagged that first yellow jersey.

Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer ReviewThis book was originally published by Bicycle Books in San Francisco. I would hope that it would still be available, even though 5 years ago hardback copies were selling at chain bookstores for as little as $4 a copy. The Ritchie book is written not just from the perspective of bicycling history (although it is well-researched from that point of view), but as an important social history. In addition, it reminds us of the history of the development of transportation and how bicycles were eventually pushed out of the public vision of having right-of-way to being relegated to the closed track of the velodrome so they wouldn't get in the way of the growing automobile culture. Major Taylor's career is important in the history of racism and attempted and often effective exclusion of Blacks not just from racing opportunities, but from the subsequent business opportunities that followed on the heels of the age of the turn-of-the-century racers. The largest reason that Major Taylor died a pauper was because he was not allowed to participate on an equal level with White businessmen in the developing automobile industry, according to Ritchie's research. Turn of the century bicycle racers, as Ritchie points out, were instrumental in contributing to the design of the shock system and the use of pneumatic tires, among other features, of the emerging American automobile. They also were some of the large investors in the industry upon their retirement from active racing status. Taylor wanted to participate in the design process and applied to a university for formal education in engineering, but was denied access, despite his hard-won efforts, previous inventions in bicycle design and testing, and celebrity status. The fact that the man died early of a stroke and alienated from his family and community in the end can only speak of a man who, after putting out his entire life, had finally been broken by the pressure of living in a racist society. Yet, writing his autobiography and selling it door to door evokes the phoenix-like quality of many members of the Black community who survive and thrive in spite of great hardship, even in our present times.Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer Overview
