Paris for Free (or Extremely Cheap), Revised (For Free Series) ReviewThose who complain about this book being out of date are missing the point of this resource. It's true that it is out of date as far as the money system is concerned, but the information that it is most useful for will never be out of date - all the major tourist attractions, but more importantly, many little known yet equally wonderful sights. If you're looking for secrets to get something cheap, you'll be disappointed. It is europe, and with the exchange rate being what it is, everything's expensive, and this book is not going to get you around that (although there are many good money saving tips). It's also not for those who want to be dazzled with pictures, which are few and far between, and black and white at that. However, this is one of the best resources for finding all of the hidden gems that comprise Paris, especially for return visitors who wish to see more than just the tourist's city.
The book outlines, arrondissement by arrondissement, every landmark and point of interest that you can imagine, from the major tourist sites to shopping districts, "cheap" stores, tourist offices and more. What it is best for is calling to attention some obscure details about buildings that you may otherwise pass by, not knowing that you are missing a real treasure inside.
I have been traveling to Paris yearly for more than ten years and know the city well. This is still one of the best resources for "discovering" Paris that I have ever found, and even after years of visits, I still occasionally look to this book to find something "new" to discover.
For the first time visitor who has limited time in the city, this book may not be for you, although it does give many helpful hints on how to avoid lines and/or find the easiest means of entrance to a particular attraction. Another plus is that it is written in simple language and clearly outlines the address, metro stop (including line #), and hours. If you are looking to completely discover Paris, this is the book for you, as it will point out and explain every beautiful and noteworthy feature of this incredible city.Paris for Free (or Extremely Cheap), Revised (For Free Series) Overview

Going to Live in Paris. ReviewI bought this book as a prospective tourist so much of the information about job hunting and healthcare are not relevant to me. I do find it alarming that there is an ongoing carrying charge to owning property in Paris. Despite articles and house hunting episodes about acquiring a pied a terre in Paris, Americans have no idea that buying (or renting!) a television set will incur an annual tv licensing fee (~$180) or that owning or occupying a domicile is taxed annually (twice)as well. Despite the 2004 publication date and the target audience being the British and not Americans, I have no regrets about buying this book. Beware of "la taxe d'habitation." Google it. And you just might hear the theme music from "Jaws." Unless your pockets are deep and frugality isn't a concern, the hop-on, hop-off style of the happy vagabond might be better than owning a bolthole in the City of Light.
I finished the entire book last night and my favorite lines are early on in the book: "From the [Latin] they took their romanticism, a large part of their looks, their religion, their love of intrigue and a tendency to corruption and lawlessness. From the Anglo-Saxons they have acquired the other half of their looks, much of their culture and commercial brilliance hampered by their innate need to argue about everything."Going to Live in Paris. Violette Nozière: A Story of Murder in 1930s Paris ReviewViolette Noziere, a young woman of eighteen, who was living with her parents in a two-room apartment in Paris, decided to poison her parents by giving them barbiturates to drink. Her father died; her mother survived. The motive? Well, this was the big and controversial point during her trial.
All this happened in 1933 in France and from that point on, she had become the most famous and infamous woman in her country and, as Prof. Maza writes,"certainly the most hated". Only the Dreyfus affair could compete with this judicial case, and which was responsible for drawing the French to read and discuss this double intended parricide in newspapers, magazines,or letters and essays. The obsession with this case has only diminished during the seventies of the previous century.
France of the 1920s and 1930s was characterized by many strikes, rallies of the right, paramilitary organizations and other less important events. For the French, the Noziere crime became what they called "an affair", a scandal which divided the public because of its complexity. Class divisions were eroding, the role of women was changing and Prof. Maza successfully recreates the atmosphere of those days not only on the political level, but also in
the sphere of the individual. Violette's crime and her trial captivated the attention of the French more than political or other social matters, precisely because this case had many elements which touched the lives of the masses. The case raised questions about those families that migrated to the city from the French countryside. It also raised the nature of life in modest families with one child and it showed clearly that the divisions between the classes were slowly disappearing.
I will not reveal too many details in order not to spoil the pleasure of reading this fascinating and engrossing book, which is superbly researched and detailed. This case was a Greek tragedy and the author has done an extraordinary job in explaining the psychological background and motives behind the crime. In fact, the Noziere case serves as the leading motif of a larger subject, namely :the sociological and artistic elements which dominated the French scene during those times. The case attracted the attention of avant-garde artists, Dadaists and Surrealists, writers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, psychhologists and sociologists, sexologists and historians.
This book is written in a complex and sophisticaed way, crammed with innumerable examples and explanations about the fascination the French had with hideous crimes and reads like a thriller. It is a legal and social history which will linger in your memory for many years to come. Vintage Murder: A Robbie Cutler Diplomatic Mystery ReviewTake one part debonair James Bond, shake and stir with a dash of Agatha Christie, John le Carre and the wine expertise of Robert Parker (the wine critic, and perhaps the mystery writer as well), and you've got the delightful cocktail of espionage, murder, and intrigue that makes up former diplomat William Shepherd's highly enjoyable "Vintage Murder." A former trade ambassador to France and also a wine connoisseur, Shepherd moves easily between the diplomatic scenes of Paris and the vineyards of France and Europe, providing a unique insight into both cultures as well as imparting a good deal of wine knowledge at no extra charge.
