If, like me, you are a fan of serious history and the meticulous research that goes into it, then this book is what you are looking for. There have been other books that provide a breezy and cursory treatment of the fascinating history of skiing, but Huntford really goes far beyond what the other books have to offer.

These characters sound like real people. Cutler is obviously a historian at heart. He does a masterful job of setting the historical context for the events that unfold in Atlantic City circa 1929 when political bosses/racketeers ran everything in the city. Detailed, lively descriptions of life on the boardwalk provide a sense of place, with historical figures like J. Edgar Hoover and Enoch "Nucky" Johnson figuring prominently in the plot. The Berlin Boxing Club ReviewI received this book through the Amazon Vine Program and my initial reaction upon looking at the cover was disappointment seeing it was a teen novel. Well, there is truth in old sayings, "Never judge a book by it's cover." The book follows the path of a young teenager through the power grabbing years of the Nazi's. The protagonist does not relate to his heritage and does his best to "blend in" by hiding in plain sight, however when he is exposed to be of Jewish heritage he is forced to learn to fight back against overwhelming odds by making an unlikely alliance with a world class boxer.
The descriptions are brutal and the writing reminds me of another excellent book that my son read for 9th grade called "The Book Thief" and my guess is that many of the readers of that book will be reading this one and they and you won't be disappointed. So when Max Schmeling, champion boxer and German national hero, makes a deal with Karl's father to give Karl boxing lessons, Karl sees it as the perfect chance to reinvent himself. A skilled cartoonist, Karl has never had an interest in boxing, but as Max becomes the mentor Karl never had, Karl soon finds both his boxing skills and his art flourishing.

But when Nazi violence against Jews escalates, Karl must take on a new role: protector of his family. Karl longs to ask his new mentor for help, but with Max's fame growing, he is forced to associate with Hitler and other Nazi elites, leaving Karl to wonder where his hero's sympathies truly lie. Can Karl balance his dream of boxing greatness with his obligation to keep his family out of harm's way?

Vintage Murder: A Robbie Cutler Diplomatic Mystery ReviewTake one part debonair James Bond, shake and stir with a dash of Agatha Christie, John le Carre and the wine expertise of Robert Parker (the wine critic, and perhaps the mystery writer as well), and you've got the delightful cocktail of espionage, murder, and intrigue that makes up former diplomat William Shepherd's highly enjoyable "Vintage Murder." A former trade ambassador to France and also a wine connoisseur, Shepherd moves easily between the diplomatic scenes of Paris and the vineyards of France and Europe, providing a unique insight into both cultures as well as imparting a good deal of wine knowledge at no extra charge. There's a wry sense of humor that runs through the narrative that reminds me just a bit of Graham Greene and his so-called "entertainments," which were his generally "lighter" novels, usually about espionage, and written mostly for fun and entertainment, but with a serious side. That is certainly how I would describe Vintage Murder, fun and quite entertaining, while never forgetting its first duty to be a well-crafted novel of maneuvering, murder, mystery, mayhem and of course Margaux.Vintage Murder: A Robbie Cutler Diplomatic Mystery OverviewThis post 9/11 thriller raises questions about terrorism and the American reaction to it. Can and should the CIA ever deal with terrorists? In the first of a new series of "diplomatic mysteries," set in American diplomatic missions overseas, career American diplomat Robbie Cutler faces this issue. Cutler, American Consul in Bordeaux, witnesses the murder of America's leading wine critic at a Wine Vintage Dinner at the Willard Hotel in Washington. Returning to Bordeaux, Cutler finds himself threatened by the Basque ETA, "the last active terrorist network in Western Europe." Helped by the lovely Sylvie Marceau, a French journalist, Cutler discovers that the Washington murder is linked with a blackmail scheme against Bordeaux's famous vineyards. Cutler and Marceau must stop the ETA killers before they succeed in terrorizing the region, and making good their threat to kill Cutler. In the meantime, the famous Bordeaux vineyards, and the scenic glories of France provide the background for their unfolding romance. The visit of a prominent United States Senator of Basque origin then raises the stakes, as the ETA targets the Senator as well as Cutler for assassination.

Batfishing in the Rainforest: Strange Tales of Travel and Fishing ReviewBatfishing in the Rainforest is one of the funniest, most insightful and heart touching collections of essays I've ever read. After reading Mr. White's newest novel (The Mangrove Coast) I have now gone on a search for every book he's written, and Batfishing in the Rainforest is unlike anything he -- or anyone else -- has done. Mr. White wrote most of these essays while he was a fishing guide, he says, at a lovely old marina on Sanibel Island, the famous vacation spot in Florida. From that little marina, he ranged far afield, traveling around the world to write quirky stories for Outside Magazine. The first story in the collection, a tale about his hilarious dog, Gator, is absolutely unforgetable and well worth the price of admission. The stories which follow, although occasionally uneven, are always uniquely written, often funny and always intelligent. Mr. White is one of those writer we all love to "discover'. Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball ReviewToo bad the original cover photo for the book was rejected due to NCAA interference. The player in the USA jersey played college baseball and the NCAA said it would pull her eligibility for all sports if she appeared on the cover. It was truly a spectacular photo of the player sliding at the plate being tagged out by the Chinese-Taipei catcher.It is a shame that the title will preclude many baseball fans from reading the book. Contained within the pages are numerous historical references to the game originally called base-ball when played in England in the 1740's. As a student of the game, as well as a player for 45 years, I was humbled by my lack of knowledge of baseball history that I thought I knew. A thoughtful and well thought out chronicle of baseball, invented by milkmaids in 18th century England to pass the time between milkings, through the re-invention of the game in 1839 America, and up until the writing of the book. While it does include the history of sporting goods magnate Albert Spalding's insistence that girls & women not play the game, as well as organized baseball's continuing ban on women players, and other injustices in between, it is all presented in a factual and straight forward manner. With the International Olympic Organizing Committee's requirements that baseball follow the same rules as all other sports, namely played by women in 40 countries on three continents, in order to return as an Olympic sport, combined with the International Amateur Baseball Federation's March 2009 pledge to the IOOC that baseball's proposal to return to the Olympics will include women's baseball, this book debuts at the most opportune time. Perhaps America's pastime will once again be enjoyed by the game's inventors - girls and women.Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball Overview
Far from being strictly a men's sport, baseball has long been enjoyed and played by Americans of all genders, races, and classes since it became popular in the 1830s. The game itself was invented by English girls and boys, and when it immigrated to the United States, numerous prominent women's colleges formed intramural teams and fielded intensely spirited and powerful players.

Jennifer Ring questions the forces that have kept girls who want to play baseball away from the game. With the professionalization of the sport in the early twentieth century, Albert Goodwill Spalding--sporting goods magnate, baseball player, and promoter--declared baseball off limits for women and envisioned global baseball as a colonialist example to teach non-white men to become civilized and rational. And by the late twentieth century, baseball had become serious business at all levels, with female players perceived as obstacles to rising male players' stakes of success.

Stolen Bases also looks at American softball, which was originally invented by men who wanted to keep playing baseball indoors during cold winter months but has become the consolation sport for most female players. Throughout her analysis, Ring searches for ways to rescue baseball from its arrogance and exclusionary entitlement and to restore the great American sport's more optimistic nickname: the people's game.

Hell on Two Wheels: An Astonishing Story of Suffering, Triumph, and the Most Extreme Endurance Race in the World ReviewMany of us are fans of the Race Across America (RAAM). Some of us actually compete, while most do it vicariously, through reading daily reports, on-the-scene updates, and wrap-up stories after the race is over. Many of these stories have been excellent when it comes to learning who won and lost, the margin of victory, as well as some good information about one particular racer or team. But what has been missing is a report that covers more than one rider or team, that gives intimate details regarding not only the events during the race, but before and after as well. That void has been filled by Amy Snyder's Hell On Two Wheels (Triumph Books, 2011).
When I read through the book, I kept thinking: this is what's been missing! Often I've wondered about other riders, other teams, how did they handle the deserts, did they have problems with the mountains in West Virginia, what was the mood of the riders and crews when they could "smell the barn" as they entered Maryland. This book answers many of those questions in the 2009 running of RAAM. Many of the names will be familiar, and this book will flesh out our knowledge with information that is both fascinating and disturbing. The name of the book describes the race, the ordeal that RAAM is, in a way that would make most of us put any Walter Mitty aspirations out of our heads.
Amy Snyder is an accomplished racer in her own right. She knows what it's like to give everything you've got, and more. After reading her book, you'll have gained some insight into just what these men and women go through in their 3000+ miles race across the US. Football Hero: A Football Genius Novel ReviewWriter Wellness: A Writer's Path to Health and Creativity
Other reviewers have done a great job explaining the plot of "Football Hero" by Tim Green. Anyone who reads this book will enjoy the story and the satisfying "good guys win with a compromise" ending. What is just as valuable is Green's writing style for young readers and the voice he projects in this title and last year's book "Football Genius."
Green has experience writing adult thrillers and non-fiction about life in the National Football League. Young readers get to partake of his writing talents and skill with all things literary by reading his new books. The language is accessible, the chapters are comfortable and managable in length, and the action is well considered. Green turns a not so good situation for a teenaged boy who has lost his family into a winning final score by giving young Ty Lewis a conscience. His choices to do the right thing are influenced by his older brother Thane's sage like stories of advice and this brings them closer while they are healing over the loss of their parents. There are many brotherhoods featured in "Football Hero" and Green prioritizes them so that readers understand that brothers can and should be able to count on each other for anything.
Teachers, librarians, and parents looking for something to encourage boys 8-12 to read will be pleased with Green's books.Football Hero: A Football Genius Novel Overview
