Short Cuts: A Guide to Oaths, Ring Tones, Ransom Notes, Famous Last Words, and Other Forms of Minimalist Communication ReviewSome readers may be searching for the ideal prescriptive usage manual for the short forms in which we do our daily linguistic business; this is not that sort of book. What it does do is tell us how people actually DO use the icon, the bank holdup note, skywriting, texting, and other miniature communication forms, with plenty of entertaining back-story on how these came to be (some of them, for all the apparent modernity of the short take as message, dating all the way back to the Romans and even beyond). Like the authors' previous offerings, this is a book that can be nibbled at for a mental bedtime snack or, for the truly ravenous logophile, devoured at one sitting (well, two or three anyway; there is a thundering lot of information in here.) Ideal for the reader who always wanted to know why newspaper headlines sometimes make unwitting gaffes ("Squad Helps Dog Bite Victim") or what (and why) the term is for a deliberately spurious dictionary entry inserted by the editors to foil lexicographic plagiarism by the competition (a "mountweazel"). An immensely entertaining book. (Warning: In spots it is also quite funny and may make you laugh out loud, so you probably shouldn't browse it in the library's reading room or the Amtrak train's Quiet Car, just to be on thesafe side.)Short Cuts: A Guide to Oaths, Ring Tones, Ransom Notes, Famous Last Words, and Other Forms of Minimalist Communication OverviewOur everyday lives are inevitably touched--and immeasurably enriched--by an extraordinary variety of miniature forms of verbal communication, from classified ads to street signs, and from yesterday's graffito to tomorrow's headline. Celebrating our long history of compact speech, Short Cuts offers a well-researched and vibrantly written account of this unsung corner of the linguistic world, inspiring a new appreciation of the wondrously varied forms of our briefest exchanges.Alexander Humez, Nicholas Humez, and Rob Flynn shed light here on an ever-growing field of minimalist genres, ranging from the bank robbery note to the billboard, from the curse hurled from a car window (or the Senate floor) to the suicide note, and from the ghost-word to the ring tone. The book is divided into ten thematic sections, as varied as "In the Dictionary" (discussing such topics as Sniglets, Mountweazels, and the Wiktionary), "In and Out of Trouble" (error messages, weasel words, the pre-nup), and "On the Lam" (ransom notes, wanted posters, portraits parlés). The authors look at the comic strip's maladicta balloon and the dinner-interrupter's robocalls, the advice column and the obit, and the many ways your personal appearance tells us who you are, from the message on your gimme cap to the tattoo with your S.O.'s name on your ankle. Uncovering the elegance, the humor, and the unspoken implications in these fleeting communications, this book provides a satisfying thoroughness and an abundance of connections that unravel how the oath became the swearword and the calling card salver turned into the Facebook wall. For readers who love language and enjoy rummaging through the cultural baggage that comes with it, Short Cuts gathers an engaging sampler of the most delightful and cogent--and above all brief--forms of contemporary English.

Explaining Research: How to Reach Key Audiences to Advance Your Work ReviewIn an era in which science and technology plays such an important role in our lives, we need to have scientists and engineers talk to us about their work. That's why I am so pleased to have found "Explaining Research" by Dennis Meredith. Even scientists who want to explain their work to the public may be at a loss on how to do that. "Explaining Research" shows the way in an engaging, informative format. Scientists learn how explain their work clearly to the public, target key audiences, and work with the news media. While Meredith discusses all the traditional ways of reaching the public, he also delves into new media like blogs and podcasts. As someone who works with scientists all the time, I will highly recommend this book to the researchers I meet. Scientists who read and follow Meredith's advice will feel more confident and able to communicate their research to a broad audience.Explaining Research: How to Reach Key Audiences to Advance Your WorkExplaining Research: How to Reach Key Audiences to Advance Your Work OverviewExplaining Research is the first comprehensive communications guidebook for scientists, engineers, and physicians. Drawing on knowledge gleaned from a forty-year career in research communications, Dennis Meredith maps out how scientists can utilize sophisticated tools and techniques to disseminate their discoveries to important audiences. He explains how to use websites, blogs, videos, webinars, old-fashioned lectures, news releases, and lay-level articles to reach key audiences, emphasizing along the way that a strong understanding of the audience in question will allow a more effective communication tailored to a unique background and set of needs. In addition to drawing on the experience of the author, the book also includes excerpts from interviews with 45 of the country's leading science communications experts, including academics, authors, journalists, and public information officers. As the "information age" places new demands on scientists, Explaining Research will be a valuable resource not only for current professional scientists, but also for students who are the voice of the science community's next generation. This authoritative guide shows how to: Develop a "strategy of synergy" that makes research communication efficient and effective Give compelling talks Build a professional Web site Create quality posters, photos, animations, videos, e-newsletters, blogs, podcasts, and Webinars Write popular articles and books Persuade donors, administrators and other key funding decision-makers Produce news releases that attract media coverage Give clear media interviews Serve as a public educator in schools and science centers Visit www.explainingresearch.com to learn more about the book and additional resources.

What Do You Say When . . .: Talking to People with Confidence on Any Social or Business Occasion ReviewI, too, have been tongue-tied many times at parties and business events. In fact, I've often worried so much about what I'm going to say I've forgotten to listen! I saw the author, Florence Isaacs, on a morning talk show and raced out to buy her book. While I can't say it's changed my life, it HAS changed my social life. The author gives practical tips that are truly helpful in getting over any initial conversational hump. I feel like I'm now armed with tools to get conversations started and keep them rolling (without rolling into a ditch!).The tips aren't silly, either. They are practical and real. And really work. Whew! Wanna talk? Bring it on!What Do You Say When . . .: Talking to People with Confidence on Any Social or Business Occasion Overview

The Political Economy of Media: Enduring Issues, Emerging Dilemmas ReviewRobert W. McChesney (Professor in the Department of Communication, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) presents The Political Economy of the Media: Enduring Issues, Emerging Dilemmas, a sharply worded critique of how journalism has decayed in today's modern, overly commercialized culture. On the bright side, an emerging media reform movement has arrived in response to the degraded ability of the modern media to be a watchdog for democracy and consumers. An in-depth social treatise concerning the crucial role the media plays in human society worldwide, The Political Economy of the Media is highly recommended especially for college library collections, as well as political science and media studies scholars. The Political Economy of Media: Enduring Issues, Emerging Dilemmas Overview
The influence of media on society is unquestioned. Its reach penetrates nearly every corner of the world and every aspect of life. But it has also been a contested realm, embodying class politics and the interests of monopoly capital. In The Political Economy of Media, one of the foremost media critics of our time, Robert W. McChesney, provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic and political powers that are being mobilized to consolidate private control of media with increasing profit - all at the expense of democracy.

In this elegant and lucid collection, McChesney examines the monopolistic competition that has created a global media that is ever more concentrated and centralized. McChesney reveals why questions about the ownership of commercial U.S. media remain off limits within the political culture; how private ownership of media leads to the degradation of journalism and suppression of genuine debate; and why corporate rule threatens democracy by failing to provide the means for an educated and informed citizenry. The Political Economy of Media also highlights resistance to corporate media over the last century, including the battle between broadcasters and the public in the 1920s and 1930s and the ongoing media reform movement today. The Political Economy of Media makes it clear that the struggle over the ownership and the role of media is of utmost importance to everyone.

Call of the Game ReviewI am not a big reader of books. Often I will buy a book, set it downand not pick it up for weeks, or even months or years. However, this book I sat and read almost cover-to-cover. As a sportscaster myself, I found it entertaining, informative, and provides excellent direction and insight for younger men and women who are hoping to break into this field. If you are planning or hoping to one day go into the broadcasting industry, whether its in sports, news, or whatever, I would say this is required reading!Call of the Game OverviewHow many times have you listened to play-by-play on television and thought, I could do that job? With this book, perhaps you can. At the least, you'll learn what it takes to be a play-by-play announcer. Your teacher? A consummate professional. For more than 25 years, Gary Bender has described the action on the playing field of 29 different sports, 27 at network level.
