Fathers of Myth ReviewMatthew Brooks is a new reporter for the Portland Herald. He is not very happy with his boss, Lloyd Hatch, an obnoxious demanding editor. However, he is very happy to have Kelly for his photographer. But if he calls her honey or sweetheart one more time, she should clobber him. He worries about his father who is widowed and lives in Florida. At times he acts a mite juvenile and he drinks too much. He doesn't seem to have any close friends except his parrot, Cashew.
Kelly, is a wonderful photographer, but doesn't seem to have had very good luck with men. She might like Matt but has no desire to find that she admires him enough to start to see him as a person and not just another man. Both she and Matt become a bit paranoid because of the things that keep happening to them. Especially when someone tries to kill Matt on top of the Space Needle in Seattle.
Matt and Kelly become caught up in a bizarre affair that starts out with an air crash and a man who runs into Matt at the site. From there the story jerks our hero and heroine from one news story to another. Each time leaving questions in their minds about the identity of a man they keep seeing in a coat and hat. Someone thinks they know something that is to be kept secret. Suddenly accidents start happening to them and they are sure these are attempts on their lives. But who would believe them. From slashed tires on their ride that leaves them stranded in the desert in Montana, to a bomb in Portland he traverses a world filled with questions and danger.
I found the plot fasinating, well developed, but the storyline felt contrived. The fact it is written in first person doesn't allow for the information and narrative that would bring a cohesiveness to the story. It felt fractured and the characters never became three-dimensional.Fathers of Myth OverviewMatthew Brooks, a young rookie journalist working for the Portland Herald, along with his beautiful photographer partner Kelly O Hara, run head on into the mystery of their lives. As they pry open this mystery, that has been purposely kept a secret for thousands of years, they discover that knowing the truth about the past, could very well cost them their lives; the disappearance of the dinosaurs and the ancient story of a global flood, to the real identity of Jack the Ripper and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, to the kidnap of Charles Lindbergh s son and the assassin of John F Kennedy, to the Hindenburg and the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion disasters, all possess one common thread of truth. Come along with me! Unearth the hidden secret about our past. Learn the real truth behind the history of mankind, and the truth about theFathers of Myth.

World Series (Odyssey) ReviewI first read this book as an eleven year old and it made a strong impression on my young mind. Now, as a 44 year old, I thought I would reread this book to take a stroll down memory lane. I wasn't disappointed. This story of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the late 1930's is the sequel to The Kid from Tomkinsvile. The "Kid" chonicles the season that leads up to the World Series and this book disects the seven game classic against the Indians. At eleven, I cheered and cried for the heroes in the story; and at 44 I did the same. This is a wonderful book, and a great look back into time, for any young boy or girl.World Series (Odyssey) OverviewRoy Tucker and his Brooklyn Dodgers teammates summon every ounce of their collective skill to fight for the greatest title in baseball--World Series champs.

The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century (Vintage) ReviewFor me, there were no huge revelations in this book but there were many, many instances that supported the general perception I had formed regarding Luce over the years. Much has been written about Henry Luce. Not a warm and fuzzy type, he avoided intimacies and had few friends. While he wanted to be recognized as a major force in the publishing world and was very successful in that respect, he had an innate sense of what his burgeoning audience wanted. He was reclusive and secretive to certain respect and seemed like an odd choice as a life partner. His second wife Claire Booth Luce seemed to be as ambitious as Luce but far more social; she seemed to be a good choice given CBL's drive and goals and Luce's level of influence. In many ways, it seemed as though their marriage might have been likened to a good business deal. As a parent, he was not of the hands on variety. As with most things, he delegated responsibilities freely when it came to familial duties and parenting.
For an essentially reclusive personality such as Luce, it was interesting just how much information was out there and pieced together to present a complete and fairly consistent picture. What I found of particular interest was Luce's relationship with Time co-founder Britton Haddon. Ostensibly, Haddon was Luce's one and only true friend, but even that friendship dissolved by the time of Haddon's early death in 1929. From that point on, Luce did everything in his power to remove Haddon's name from the history of TIME. It was emotion coldness of this type that ran through this book in relation to Luce and the way he interacted with people. Even his affairs were seemingly bereft of warmth or true intimacy.
What punctuated this book as an exceptionally good bio the level of detail which was dispersed throughout. Supporting this tapestry was solid footnoting and indexing. I often found myself referring to earlier statements made and this was invaluable as I verified information.
While I can't say I liked Luce or had a lot of empathy for this son of missionaries to China, I found his meteoric and sustained success nothing less than fascinating. This book is especially interesting because Luce's career and publications present a detailed picture of 20th century print journalism. The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century (Vintage) Overview

Danger Zone (Point Signature) ReviewJimmy is a star in his hometown, but can he play with All Stars in the U.S? Jimmy is from Minnesota where he is the star in small town Granham. He can play Basketball, but can he compete with international teams as he joins the U.S. Teen Dream Team? They first travel to Los Angeles to practice with the team before the tournament. The top ten teen players in the country make the team and Jimmy is one of the two white players. Does his color make him look bad in the first practices? "Danger Zone" published in 1996 by David Klass shows Augustus' (black player on Jimmy's team) life in L.A. is very different from Jimmy's small town life. After Jimmy puts that and other conflicts behind him the U.S. Teen Dream Team flies to Italy for the tournament. There are more conflicts and a death threat is sent to them. Racism and loyalty take over the tournament.
Racism collides with teammates and others, as they meet for the first time in L.A. and Italy. In the first practices, Jimmy cannot make a shot to save his life. Augustus thinks his cousin should have made the team instead of some no name. His thoughts turn into fists as he says to Jimmy, "You only made the team, because you're some rich white boy." Then it becomes Jimmy vs. Augustus in a fist fight. As the U.S. team flies to Italy some of the fans don't like Jimmy's teammates or the color of their skin. The dark skinned people in Italy are treated differently, as Augustus sees black people poor and living on the streets and he discusses this issue in a press conference. Fans from other teams think he and his black teammates should not be in this tournament.
Are you loyal to your team and teammates though the whole tournament? Some players on Jimmy's team are loyal to their team in hard times, but one is loyal to them all the time. Augustus is that one. He toughened up and put the death threat behind him when others worried about what was going to happen during the tournament. Augustus was accustomed to being treated differently because of his childhood in L.A. and kept the team alive in the tournament. He is concerned about his teammates and when Jimmy is having a rough time sleeping, Augustus tells him "You're not helping us win and you look like death warmed over." Augustus is thinking about the team as a whole and for Jimmy's welfare.
"Danger Zone" by David Klass is successful at showing anyone can overcome different types of obstacles when they have a goal. This book shows not to judge a book by its cover and "Danger Zone" shows racism plays a part even in a basketball game. This book has thrilling hoop action and is excellent to read. I would recommend this book to anyone, because it's story on how a teen copes with racism in a team environment. You won't want to put this book down; you'll just keep turning the pages. I give this book nine out of ten stars.

Learning to Swim: A Novel ReviewLEARNING TO SWIM may be the best debut novel I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. It's written in effortless first person, and only moments into the first chapter I found myself thinking of myself AS the book's main character, even though her life and adventures are very different than mine.
Tucked within this thriller are meditations on the nature of family, how bonding happens, the dangers of allowing ourselves to be vulnerable - things you will take with you, when you climb out of the swift-moving river that is LEARNING TO SWIM.

Sudoku from an Old Newspaper ReviewIt's a true masterpiece of storytelling: natural union of the old-school precision and subtle but poisonous present-day vapours. If you are an expert in literature, you will notice that Cortazarian atmosphere of uncertainty, Nabokovian touch of magical linking and Hemingwaian laconic definition. If you are not an expert... you will just enjoy this rapidly pacing plot with relentless suspense and underhand development of human characters and relations.
And yes, it's about sudoku game and blind sweepstakes, about old gentleman giving fish names to young swimmers, about fatal tranquillity and mistakes of cardiac rhythm.Sudoku from an Old Newspaper OverviewSudoku is a story of unusual love, intense competition, and untimely death. All this still has a place in our lives. The start of a criminal plot could be any insignificant detail. It could even be a sudoku puzzle from an old newspaper.

Football Hero: A Football Genius Novel ReviewWriter Wellness: A Writer's Path to Health and Creativity
Other reviewers have done a great job explaining the plot of "Football Hero" by Tim Green. Anyone who reads this book will enjoy the story and the satisfying "good guys win with a compromise" ending. What is just as valuable is Green's writing style for young readers and the voice he projects in this title and last year's book "Football Genius."
Green has experience writing adult thrillers and non-fiction about life in the National Football League. Young readers get to partake of his writing talents and skill with all things literary by reading his new books. The language is accessible, the chapters are comfortable and managable in length, and the action is well considered. Green turns a not so good situation for a teenaged boy who has lost his family into a winning final score by giving young Ty Lewis a conscience. His choices to do the right thing are influenced by his older brother Thane's sage like stories of advice and this brings them closer while they are healing over the loss of their parents. There are many brotherhoods featured in "Football Hero" and Green prioritizes them so that readers understand that brothers can and should be able to count on each other for anything.
Teachers, librarians, and parents looking for something to encourage boys 8-12 to read will be pleased with Green's books.Football Hero: A Football Genius Novel Overview
