Its goals are to help librarians evaluate the adequacy of existing collections, to provide reading guidance to young adults, and to assist in preparing bibliographies and reading lists. The book contains over 6,500 titles, about two-thirds of them non-fiction, that have been recommended for library collections by at least two of the nine most prominent young-adult book review sources. The citations to these titles contain full bibliographic information for identifying and ordering the books, along with a helpful, brief summary of content. The arrangement of the book is by broad subject, ranging from literary form to history and geography to recreation and sports. Almost 260 pages are devoted to indexes by author, title, and subject/grade level. With over 1000 pages of book titles, authors and discriptions, it is easily a book I know I can trust. Best of all, all of its books are just for teens(Ages 12-18)! With all the books out these days that focus on trash, it's really hard to find a good book to read, in my opinion. I'm a book-loving teen, myself, constantly searching for a new book. The Berlin Boxing Club ReviewI received this book through the Amazon Vine Program and my initial reaction upon looking at the cover was disappointment seeing it was a teen novel. Well, there is truth in old sayings, "Never judge a book by it's cover." The book follows the path of a young teenager through the power grabbing years of the Nazi's. The protagonist does not relate to his heritage and does his best to "blend in" by hiding in plain sight, however when he is exposed to be of Jewish heritage he is forced to learn to fight back against overwhelming odds by making an unlikely alliance with a world class boxer.
The descriptions are brutal and the writing reminds me of another excellent book that my son read for 9th grade called "The Book Thief" and my guess is that many of the readers of that book will be reading this one and they and you won't be disappointed. Demoralized by relentless attacks on a heritage he doesn't accept as his own, Karl longs to prove his worth to everyone around him.

So when Max Schmeling, champion boxer and German national hero, makes a deal with Karl's father to give Karl boxing lessons, Karl sees it as the perfect chance to reinvent himself. A skilled cartoonist, Karl has never had an interest in boxing, but as Max becomes the mentor Karl never had, Karl soon finds both his boxing skills and his art flourishing.

But when Nazi violence against Jews escalates, Karl must take on a new role: protector of his family. Karl longs to ask his new mentor for help, but with Max's fame growing, he is forced to associate with Hitler and other Nazi elites, leaving Karl to wonder where his hero's sympathies truly lie. Danger Zone (Point Signature) ReviewJimmy is a star in his hometown, but can he play with All Stars in the U.S? Jimmy is from Minnesota where he is the star in small town Granham. He can play Basketball, but can he compete with international teams as he joins the U.S. Teen Dream Team? They first travel to Los Angeles to practice with the team before the tournament. The top ten teen players in the country make the team and Jimmy is one of the two white players. Does his color make him look bad in the first practices? "Danger Zone" published in 1996 by David Klass shows Augustus' (black player on Jimmy's team) life in L.A. is very different from Jimmy's small town life. After Jimmy puts that and other conflicts behind him the U.S. Teen Dream Team flies to Italy for the tournament. There are more conflicts and a death threat is sent to them. Racism and loyalty take over the tournament.
Racism collides with teammates and others, as they meet for the first time in L.A. and Italy. In the first practices, Jimmy cannot make a shot to save his life. Augustus thinks his cousin should have made the team instead of some no name. His thoughts turn into fists as he says to Jimmy, "You only made the team, because you're some rich white boy." Then it becomes Jimmy vs. Augustus in a fist fight. As the U.S. team flies to Italy some of the fans don't like Jimmy's teammates or the color of their skin. The dark skinned people in Italy are treated differently, as Augustus sees black people poor and living on the streets and he discusses this issue in a press conference. Fans from other teams think he and his black teammates should not be in this tournament.
Are you loyal to your team and teammates though the whole tournament? Some players on Jimmy's team are loyal to their team in hard times, but one is loyal to them all the time. Augustus is that one. He toughened up and put the death threat behind him when others worried about what was going to happen during the tournament. Augustus was accustomed to being treated differently because of his childhood in L.A. and kept the team alive in the tournament. He is concerned about his teammates and when Jimmy is having a rough time sleeping, Augustus tells him "You're not helping us win and you look like death warmed over." Augustus is thinking about the team as a whole and for Jimmy's welfare.
"Danger Zone" by David Klass is successful at showing anyone can overcome different types of obstacles when they have a goal. This book shows not to judge a book by its cover and "Danger Zone" shows racism plays a part even in a basketball game. This book has thrilling hoop action and is excellent to read. I would recommend this book to anyone, because it's story on how a teen copes with racism in a team environment. You won't want to put this book down; you'll just keep turning the pages. I give this book nine out of ten stars.

Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball ReviewToo bad the original cover photo for the book was rejected due to NCAA interference. The player in the USA jersey played college baseball and the NCAA said it would pull her eligibility for all sports if she appeared on the cover. It was truly a spectacular photo of the player sliding at the plate being tagged out by the Chinese-Taipei catcher.It is a shame that the title will preclude many baseball fans from reading the book. Contained within the pages are numerous historical references to the game originally called base-ball when played in England in the 1740's. As a student of the game, as well as a player for 45 years, I was humbled by my lack of knowledge of baseball history that I thought I knew. A thoughtful and well thought out chronicle of baseball, invented by milkmaids in 18th century England to pass the time between milkings, through the re-invention of the game in 1839 America, and up until the writing of the book. While it does include the history of sporting goods magnate Albert Spalding's insistence that girls & women not play the game, as well as organized baseball's continuing ban on women players, and other injustices in between, it is all presented in a factual and straight forward manner. With the International Olympic Organizing Committee's requirements that baseball follow the same rules as all other sports, namely played by women in 40 countries on three continents, in order to return as an Olympic sport, combined with the International Amateur Baseball Federation's March 2009 pledge to the IOOC that baseball's proposal to return to the Olympics will include women's baseball, this book debuts at the most opportune time. Far from being strictly a men's sport, baseball has long been enjoyed and played by Americans of all genders, races, and classes since it became popular in the 1830s. The game itself was invented by English girls and boys, and when it immigrated to the United States, numerous prominent women's colleges formed intramural teams and fielded intensely spirited and powerful players.


Jennifer Ring questions the forces that have kept girls who want to play baseball away from the game. With the professionalization of the sport in the early twentieth century, Albert Goodwill Spalding--sporting goods magnate, baseball player, and promoter--declared baseball off limits for women and envisioned global baseball as a colonialist example to teach non-white men to become civilized and rational. And by the late twentieth century, baseball had become serious business at all levels, with female players perceived as obstacles to rising male players' stakes of success.


Stolen Bases also looks at American softball, which was originally invented by men who wanted to keep playing baseball indoors during cold winter months but has become the consolation sport for most female players. Throughout her analysis, Ring searches for ways to rescue baseball from its arrogance and exclusionary entitlement and to restore the great American sport's more optimistic nickname: the people's game.

I used it as a read aloud in my classroom, with outstanding sucess. The kids loved it. "Stealing Home" tells the story of Robinson, from his childhood in Pasedena, CA where his was the only black family in an all-white neighborhood, through college at UCLA and on into his career. Barry Denenberg, the author, recreates Jackie's life in a way that keeps the reader's interest throughout. In fact, this biography reads a little like a novel. Ultimate Sports: Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults ReviewThis book contains a series of original short stories written by authors of novels for teenagers. Although each story is related to sports in some way, mostly the stories are about adolescents relating to others in their lives. Some use sports as escapism from something. Peter thinks cross-country running might give him some rest from the two hours of piano practice he is required to do every day. While hiding from police, Randy takes up boxing. Triathlons give mentally challenged Clark a place to be successful. David joins an otherwise all-Hawaiian paddling team to get away from his father, just as Lenny stays out playing handball till all hours of the night to get away from his father. Max goes fishing to get away from the daily grind. Kirsty escapes on a yacht by mistake, then realizes she loves to sail. Jennifer plays tennis to keep occupied while waiting for the end of the world. And the hobbyist collects memorabilia to make himself forget he isn't an athlete.
Others in this book play a sport to get something in particular out of it. Sun wants her father's attention on her instead of on her little brother all of the time. Jessie wants her friends Meadow and Diane to meet each other and get along, and she thinks the racquetball court is the perfect place for that to happen. Curt and his friends want to be in the "Guinness Book of World Records." Moose wants to carry the football for once, instead of just tackling the other guys.
Still others are changed by their sport. Joey learns a little something about outsmarting the other team when his uncle coaches his high school wrestling team, and Patrice's entire life is affected when she goes on a scuba diving trip to the Caribbean.
Each story, although different, is able to pull the reader into the life of a teenager as it revolves and as sports affect it. Most of these stories were excellent. I liked how they involved sports but that wasn't the entire focus of the stories. It was also interesting to read what some of my favorite young adult authors were able to do in a short story format.
I tend to like novels better than short stories, though, as short stories always leave me wanting to know more about the characters and their lives.Ultimate Sports: Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults Overview
