Cars at Speed: Classic Stories from Grand Prix's Golden Age ReviewI purchased the paperback version of this book sometime in the late 60s, and I've returned to it many times over the years. Apart from it's hardcover format, line-drawings to lead-off each chapter, and a new introduction by author Robert Daley, this is exactly the same book that was issued many years ago. It captures an era (the late 50s and early 60s) in Formula 1 and international sports car racing that bears little resemblance to what we see today.
As Daley points out in his introduction, the two main differences between then and now are death and money. Then, several top drivers would die every year; the chance of a top grand prix driver surviving into retirement were literally less than the odds of surviving a round of Russian roulette. Now, Formula 1 has not seen a fatal accident since that horrible weekend 15 years ago when Ratzenberger and Senna died at San Marino
And the money: then, the driver's salaries were comparable to that of a successful insurance salesman, and endorsements were few and far between. Why risk an ad campaign on a driver who might be dead before the campaign could even get under way? Now, the drivers make millions on salaries and endorsements, and are part of a jet-setting international celebrity elite.
The world of Cars at Speed was a world in which advertising played a minimal role and in which old national rivalries were still in the forefront. The color of the car was determined by the country of it's manufacturer (red for Italy, green for England, silver for Germany, and so on). There were few if any sponsorhsip logos on the cars or on the drivers' uniforms; it was a game for wealthy sportsman and the manufacturers of world-class sports cars, not for international corporations marketing beer, cigarettes, or clothing.
Daley's format is essentially to focus on the sport nation-by-nation, with a chapter on each major grand prix and sports car event (in the latter group, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, and Le Mans).
Daley captures the color and danger of the era very well, anecdotally and almost gossipy at times. He captures the specifics of time and place, the ambiance of the circuits. Speaking of the circuits, several of those featured in Cars at Speed - the old Nurburgring, Zandvoort, Reims - have not been used for years, victims of economics or heightened safety standards. Others - Monza, Spa, Silverstone - have seen major alterations, mostly in the name of safety - and bear little resemblance to the circuits described in Cars at Speed.
Daley is above all preoccupied with the danger of the sport, and that overriding possibility of death on the track is perhaps the main theme of the book. According to Daley, that aspect of the original book drew a lot of criticism from the fraternity of motor racing journalists, who downplayed the death and danger of the era almost to a fault. (In that vein, I remember a piece in the mid-60s, written - I believe - by Road & Track's then-F1 correspondent, Henry Manney, describing the death of a driver during the German Grand Prix (I forget the specific driver, perhaps de Beaufort or Anderson or Mitter). Manney's terse comment: "Also, sad to relate, poor _________ went off at Bergwerk and suffered fatal injuries." That was it.)
Middle-aged readers will read this with a sense of nostalgia for a more romantic and less commercialized era, albeit a much more dangerous one. Younger readers will read it with a different perspective, perhaps with wonder that so much death and danger was allowed to persist for so long before reforms were implemented. But they may also be fascinated by a look into a day when money wasn't everything, when the drivers seemed to have more varied personalities and interests than they do now, and when even a determined amateur could find his way onto a Grand Prix grid.
A final comment on some of the book's features: unlike Daley's The Cruel Sport, this book is all text with no photographs other than those on the cover. There are, however, diagrams of the circuits, and listings of the winners of major F1 and sports car races through 1961.Cars at Speed: Classic Stories from Grand Prix's Golden Age OverviewLong before he became a best-selling novelist, Robert Daley was a European sports correspondent for the New York Times. In 1961, he published his first book, Cars At Speed, an historical and contemporary look at Grand Prix and sports car racing at twelve of the worlds greatest circuits. This hard-to-find and now collectible book, widely considered one of the best books ever written about sports car racing, returns here in a special edition, with a new Introduction by Daley as well as commissioned drawings of each featured circuit. A rare opportunity to travel back in time to racings golden era, Cars at Speed offers a fascinating look at a time when danger and passion defined racing. Daley discusses the Grand Prix circuits of that era--e.g., Nu00fcrburgring, Monza, Silverstone, Zandvoort, Spa, Monaco--detailing the qualities, history, great races, controversies, and accidents of each. He focuses on the stories of drivers such as the Marquis de Portago, Phil Hill, Stirling Moss, and Jean Behra, among others, recreating the mythical quality of the Grand Prix in its prime.

Drive to Win: The Essential Guide to Race Driving ReviewCarroll Smith outlines all the skills and attributes that it takes to be a first class driver. There are sections on race craft, fitness both mental and physical, chassis tuning, tire selection, data acquisition, and general tuning concepts. A well-written and informative book for the race car driver both experienced and novice. Unlike some of the other books that I have read in this category, it was entertaining and informative as opposed to the "text book" style that seems to be so common!Drive to Win: The Essential Guide to Race Driving Overview

Eddie Sachs: The Clown Prince of Racing: The Life And Times Of The World's Greatest Race Driver ReviewEddie Sachs must have been quite a character. This excellent book reconstructs not only the life of great race-driver, but also an era in which things were not yet completely spoiled by money, managers and advertising.Eddie Sachs: The Clown Prince of Racing: The Life And Times Of The World's Greatest Race Driver OverviewEDDIE SACHS--THE CLOWN PRINCE OF RACING is a thoroughly researched biography of the "self-proclaimed" World's Greatest Race Car Driver. In the books introduction, the author states that just like there will never be another Bob Hope or John Wayne or Billy Graham, there will never be another Eddie Sachs. No race driver, past or present, can match the flamboyancy, zeal and zaniness of the Clown Prince of Racing. Sachs was also a great orator who could hold audiences spellbound. He would have his audiences pleading for more racing stories. Eddie captured the prestigious pole position for the Indianapolis 500 in 1960 and 1961. He was leading the 1961 500 Mile Race until he pitted to change a badly worn tire with just three laps to go. He wound up second to A.J. Foyt by 8 seconds. The following year he charged from 27th to finish 3rd. The story of Eddie Sachs can serve as an inspiration to all youth. When Eddie began his racing career, he was one of the worst drivers to ever compete. However, by sure determination and persistence, he would go on to become a member of the Indy 500 Hall of Fame! Many times Eddie would state, "If you can't win, be spectacular!" He lived that creed to the very end. On May 30, 1964 both Eddie and rookie driver Dave MacDonald died in a fiery crash at the start of the 500 Mile Race. It was by far the most spectacular accident in the history of the Indianapolis 500.

Ferrari 330/P4 ReviewWhile there are a few new things in this book, there is no call to take a $50 book, put it in a $100 box, and expect good reviews. Instead buy Ferrari P3/412P by Huet and Carrieri, Ferrari P 1961-1973 by Cassuci, or the simple paperback Ferrari 'P' Series by Beehl. Marasca's book would be an excellent buy in ordinary hardback at a reasonable price. I kept a copy simply because of a replica under construction.Ferrari 330/P4 OverviewWhen enthusiasts speak of the "Ford-Ferrari Wars" at LeMans in the mid-1960s, this is the Ferrari of which they speak. This beautifully produced slipcase edition commemorates the great endurance race car, of which only four were ever built. Today, only three survive with an approximate market value of 10 million each. This exhaustive history of those fantastic cars examines their technical histories and development, their complete competition records, and the great drivers who raced them-including Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon-as well as primary adversaries like Carroll Shelby, Jim Hall, Mario Andretti, and Dan Gurney.

Ferrari: The Inside Story of the Battle for the Championship ReviewJane Nottage secured unparalleled access to Ferrari and its team members to write this book, but that same high level access obviously placed huge constraints on what could be put to paper. Unfortunately, this has reduced "The Passion and the Pain" to nothing more than a mere fluff piece for Ferrari, a rather askew view of the Ferrari Formula One team, from their own perspective.
Despite this, "Passion and the Pain", the "authorized" story of Ferrari's 1997 season, is still a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of one of Grand Prix racing's most famous and glamourous teams. Even if diplomatic reasons dictate that, for example, Jerez 1997 is pretty much glossed over as a simple racing accident (the whole of the Jerez weekend only rates 1 and a half pages).
The story begins with a foreword by Niki Lauda (briefly a consultant to the team), then a brief introduction to the racing history of Ferrari, before going on to relate the foundations of the modern Schumacher era. Chapters 3 to 6 go over the fortunes of the 1996 season, Chapter 7 covers the winter break, before proceeding to the 1997 season from Chapter 8 to 15.
Scattered throughout the chapters are sidebars of interesting tidbits relating to such things as catering to the Ferrari team, the logistics of getting team personnell to the races, and the manufacture of the race cars back at Fiorano. There is quite a bit of content devoted to the mechanics (Nigel Stepney and "the boys" get a credit in the acknowledgements), and of course to the glory boys, Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine.
Despite the constraints of being an "authorized" story, Nottage does do a very good job of relating the day to day details of the workings of the team. However, it must be kept in mind that the book is very uncritical of the team, with the focus being to deliver the story of the 1996 and 1997 season from the viewpoint of the race team. "The Passion and the Pain" is still a worthwhile look, particularly if you are a Ferrari fan or you are interested in the inner workings of a top flight Formula One team.Ferrari: The Inside Story of the Battle for the Championship OverviewIntroduction by Niki Lauda. Beginning with the signing of double World Champion Michael Schumacher, this book traces Scuderia Ferrari's initial problems with their 1996 car and the frustration of a string of early retirements. The complex internal maneuvering, the hopes and expectations, and the pressure to perform and produce a world-champion car are just some of the issues covered. Filled with firsthand interviews with key members of the team and exclusive photographs taken both on and off the track.

Bernie Ecclestone: King of Sport ReviewVery interesting book if you want to know about Bernie's life and the F1 world. Although there is a football image in the cover, there is not much about that business in the book.Bernie Ecclestone: King of Sport OverviewHe is the man who created modern-day Formula One. He is both feared and admired for the way in which he masterminded its transformation from an amateur sport of the fifties into a global billion dollar industry of the 21st century. And now, with his fortune, influence, and power, Bernie Ecclestone has moved into the world of soccer with Renault F1 boss Flavio Briatore to turn Queen's Park Rangers, a struggling west London club, into a serious rival to the capital's glamour club, Chelsea. Overnight, QPR has access to more wealth than Real Madrid, able to compete with the financial backing of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea's Russian billionaire owner. But what makes Bernie run? What lies behind the grim, poker-face of this deal-maker extraordinaire, who, for nearly 40 years, has ruthlessly exploited and dominated Formula One? To many he became the savior of the sport, but there have also been many who have suffered at this hands-the weak and the gullible, the politically naive and unsuspecting. They have a different story to tell. Revealing the unbridled avarice, callousness, and corruption behind the hype of Formula One, this book also shows the warts-and-all character of the man who is now setting his sights on a sport no less decadent.

Le Mans '55: The Crash That Changed the Face of Motor Racing ReviewMy old boss at my first writing gig told me - "easy readin' is hard writin' " and he was right. This book, an indepth account of the worst car crash and loss of life in all of motorsports, was fascinating but could have been much, much easier to read. I originally thought that I was just tired as I first sat down to read, but it was the same thing the next day as I struggled with the author's difficult writing style. Since I consider Le Mans one of a handfull of great races, I really wanted to learn more about the tragedy and the aftermath. The author certainly did his research and the details, maps and drawings, calculations and photos all helped to bring this event, fifty years back, into sharp focus. A definite plus. I especially loved his explanation of the German, French, British post-war tensions and how it affected the way people formed opinions about racing teams. But I really had to strain to get through some parts because his style and sentence structures are not familiar to me.
It's on my motorsports book shelf but I don't think it needs to be on yours unless you too are a motorhead.Le Mans '55: The Crash That Changed the Face of Motor Racing OverviewThe worst crash in motor racing history - killing more than 80 people - was produced by a ferocious and haunting combination of circumstances: nationalism, raw speed, the nature of a 24-hour race, and chance. The crash drew in Mike Hawthorn, the blond playboy from Farnham, in a Jaguar, and Juan-Manuel Fangio, one of the greatest drivers of all, in a Mercedes. A crowd of 250,000 watched hypnotised as Hawthorn set out to break Fangio, the two cars going faster and faster...and faster. Another English playboy, Lance Macklin, was caught up in the crash in his Austin-Healey, along with a 50-year-old Frenchman driving under the assumed name of Pierre Levegh. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It cost him his life, even as his car was torn to pieces that scythed into the dense crowd. In this new and full study of the fateful day, Christopher Hilton sets the race itself in the context of the 1950s. Through a host of interviews - with drivers, team members, journalists and spectators - and original research at Le Mans and in the Mercedes archive in Stuttgart, he recreates every aspect of the race and the crash. Much of the material has never been seen before. He examines the aftermath - the bitter blame game, the conflicting testimonies, the direct threat to motorsport in Europe - and chronicles the beginning of the culture of safety that has affected what we see of motorsport on our television screens today.

Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul ReviewAlthough I am an avid NASCAR fan, upon finishing this book, I came to the realization that you don't even have to know what NASCAR stands for to appreciate the storys and messages conveyed within the pages. I will admit some background on driver deaths would be very helpful information if I didn't know the history as well as I do. ... My favorite story is also one of the shortest in the book. "Special Delivery" will make you think twice about that big brown truck when you see it next time I gauruntee. Definitely the saddest story in the book in my opinion. (page 33- I've had so many people read it I've put the page to memory). If you've ever read Chicken Soup books, you'll know what to expect with the wide variety of topics discussed, and if you're a NASCAR fan, you'll enjoy the NASCAR ties expressed in each story. Definitely worth the price.Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul Overview
