This is truly an inspiring book for sports fans and non-sports fans, men and women, adults and teens alike. There is something in there for everyone. I find it amazing that the author was able to get interviews with all of these great coaches.
The book reveals great insights into how and why these successful coaches are successful. These insights can be applied to everyone in all aspects of life. There are some great quotes by the coaches also. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was an easy, enjoyable read.
This would make a great Christmas gift, hostess gift AND/OR coffee table book. I already have my coffee table edition. I am buying this book for a lot of people on my Christmas list. Author John Wilcockson has written an absolutely fascinating, wonderfully informative, and totally engaging biography of one of the premier sports figures of our (or any) time, Lance Armstrong. The story of Armstrong's humble childhood (he was the product of a broken family) through his initial successes as a triathlete and eventually, a bicycle racer, is especially engrossing--as is the story of his absolutely incredible comeback after having one of the most severe cases of cancer his doctors had ever seen. One really gets a sense of the incredible grit and tenacity that would lead Armstrong to an unprecedented seven (and at this time, a possible--or probable--eight) victories in the Tour de France. Wilcockson fills out the biography with extensive quotes derived from interviews with all of the major protagonists in Armstrong's life: his family, friends, coaches, romantic interests, professional colleagues--this gives a wonderfully rich texture to the book and lets us really know the man rather than just the sports icon. I am a golfer and everyone who plays the game will tell you that golf is a metaphor for life. These short essays really capture the essence of the game. I suggest that everybody start with the essay entitled "A Wing Grew Back" written by Jay Gearan. It is skillfully crafted and immediately draws the reader into the inspiring story of the challenges confronting a handicapped golfer. Willie Mays: A Biography (Baseball's All-Time Greatest Hitters) ReviewNot the standard by which biographies should be judged, but okay. Unless you're a huge Willie or Giants fan, it's not a must read. There are a few editing mistakes and several factual errors. Juan Marichal was suspended eight days not nine in 1965 for his fight with John Roseboro as reported in the book. There were other errors that a baseball fan would know as obviously wrong, such as making a 400' throw from the outfield to 2nd base.
It covers Willie's life equally. Talks of his special relationship with Leo Durocher and how Willie didn't care for Bill Rigney. It talks about Willie's two marriages a sufficient amount and his problems in buying a house when he first moved to SF. It also tells that Willie moved back to NY to placate his first wife to try to save his marriage. Maintaining homes on both coasts was a strain on Willie financially. The book also mentions that Willie worn large baseball hats, so it was easier for his hat to fall off and impress the crowd. Now we know!

These stories are longer, not as short, catchy or memorable as Book I. The first book was filled with birdies and an eagle or two. This one is heavy on pars with a few birdies. In short, it is very much a sequal.
This does not mean it does not have its merits. Stories are good, and one, "The Life and Times of a Golf Ball" is outstanding, alone worth the price of the book.

Flashing Before My Eyes: 50 Years of Headlines, Deadlines & Punchlines ReviewI was kind of put off by the two negative reviews from this site, then I decided to read the book anyways just because I have been a fan of Dick Schaap's for a long time.
I must say that the personal stories of his failed marriages was kind of off putting, but he seems to be poking fun at himself more than anything else. The book itself is incredible. This guy knew everybody. He was able to befriend just about everyone out there, whether they are in politics, sports, or anything else that matters. The stories are great, and the view points hilarious. Anyone can find fault in what anyone says. I find that the two reviewers who gave this book a negative review seems to be looking for something to pick on. The faults that they ascribe to the author may be valid, but they are also nitpicking. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has some time and want to read about a fascinating life spent conversing with some of the more interesting people in our society. "Special Delivery" will make you think twice about that big brown truck when you see it next time I gauruntee. Definitely the saddest story in the book in my opinion. Game, Set, Match: Billie Jean King and the Revolution in Women's Sports ReviewHow quickly we forget what we didn't have back in the day--equal rights! Ware's book reminds us of how hard Billie Jean King and other feminists fought to bring the social consciousness into the reality of female discrimination.
My generation--the 50s girls--were called tomboys if we liked sports. We didn't have the opportunities that girls and women of the Title IX generation do. They take for granted that competing in sports is something that you do because you want to.
There may have been worse forms of prejudice (socially) in the U.S., but there is no sharper example of inequity than that which operated against girls and women who took part or wished to take part in competitive sports. School administrators were not necessarily opposed to women's sports as long as they could do it without cutting into programs for men. Normally those in charge of making these decisions were men.
In 1973, Billie Jean King was the right feminist in the right sport at the right moment in American history. Her match against Bobby Riggs cemented her stature as America's first female sports superstar. She proved that women did not choke, were not frail and weak, and could face pressure and take it. In a single tennis match, Billie Jean was able to do more for the cause of women than most feminists can achieve in a lifetime. To this day, strangers, especially women, still approach Billie Jean to tell her that the match changed their lives. She moved beyond just tennis to become a symbol for something even bigger: women's rights and women's changing role in society.
Billie Jean appears in every chapter of Ware's book, but sometimes only in a supporting role--it shows where her story and that of Title IX converge--working toward eradicating all forms of discrimination in careers, personal lifestyles, and athletics. She wanted little girls to dare to dream of equal-opportunity and offered her career as a model and an inspiration. In 1990 Life magazine named her one of the hundred most influential people of the twentieth century.
Now the dilemma of modern feminism is how to recognize and embrace difference while also seeking formal equality. One of the major tenets is freedom of choice--women should be free to pursue any life courses they choose unencumbered by stereotypes or traditional gender expectations--in sports or any other areas. There is a tendency now to dismiss feminism as a relic of the past, to talk about the amazing opportunities girls have these days, to act as if the revolution is over and the mission accomplished. Well, it isn't.
Ware's view of history should be read by women of all ages--those who lived through it and survived as well as (perhaps especially) the younger ones who benefited by it.

A Passion to Lead: Seven Leadership Secrets for Success in Business, Sports, and Life ReviewSummary: Calhoun's A Passion to Lead draws practical leadership lessons from the basketball court and applies these to everyday life. Relying heavily on his experiences as a coach and the experiences of his players, Calhoun preaches the value of ambition and the virtue of hard-work. His book is roughly organized around seven broad leadership principles, such as the need for high standards, discipline, contingency plans, and tough mindedness in order to achieve success. To support these principles, Calhoun marshals a seemingly endless series of basketball anecdotes, each summarized with the rhetorical flare of a halftime pep talk. In this way, Calhoun exhibits at least as much passion for basketball as he does for leadership. The book concludes, strangely enough, with an informal catalogue of the author's accomplishments followed by a string of stirring exhortations, the whole of which reduces simply to the idea, "I did it, so can you!"
Assessment: Despite its aspirations, A Passion to Lead fails to contribute much original or meaningful thought to the ongoing leadership discussion in our culture. The work suffers from loose organization on major and minor levels. The reader finds himself adrift in each chapter, without the aid of logical thought progressions between sections. Moreover, the sheer volume of basketball related material in the book detracts from its primary purpose: namely, to elucidate leadership principles for life. The principles that do emerge often come across as cliché or coach-speak. This all would lead a cynic to conclude the book was composed hastily in order to capitalize on the name recognition of its author and laud his success in coaching (not to contributing insight on leadership). USA Today Everyday Sudoku: 200 Puzzles from The Nation's No. 1 Newspaper ReviewA co-worker turned me on to Sudoku a couple of months ago. He does the USA
Today Sudoku daily. I picked up this collection recently. The book starts
(as do most such collections) with the almost-standard Sudoku tutorial.
The puzzles are rated from one to five stars (easy to hard) for difficulty
(65 one-star, 45 two-star, 50 three-star, 20 four-star, and 20 five-star).
The star ratings seem reasonable. In every collection I've seen, I have
found that there will always be a few easy ones that are hard because you
missed something staring you in the face, and a couple of hard ones that
are easy because you got lucky at just the right point. The ratings here
seem pretty accurate.
The grids are decent-sized; not jumbo, but not tiny, with one puzzle per
page. In addition to the usual heavier lines between 3x3 cubes, these
puzzles have alternating cubes shaded gray, which makes it very clear
where the cube boundaries are. The gray is a little too dark for my taste
(especially if you don't have a dark pen or pencil). The numbers are bold
and large.
Unlike some collections, these are all traditional Sudoku -- no variants
such as Monster Sudoku, Sudoku X, Killer Sudoku, etc. Also, unlike a lot
of recent collections, the givens are actually placed symmetrically (in
fact, this book was the first one that I've purchased that actually does
use symmetric givens throughout).
All in all, a good collection of Sudoku. By the way, if you're interested
in an overview of Sudoku, including history and mathematical background,
I recommend the Wikipedia article on Sudoku.
