Game Day (Paula Wiseman Books) ReviewYoung Tiki and Ronde Barber play football for their hometown team in Virginia. Tiki often gets the ball and scores more often than Ronde, who is feeling a bit neglected and overlooked as a result. His blocks help Tiki score. Why don't people recognize that fact? His mother and his coach are fortunately of the mindset that every effort is worthwhile and that teamwork is what wins games and spells success. Ronde feels some of that spirit by the end of the story.
This book therefore attempts to battle the prevailing stereotype, perpetuated by the sports media and by such movies as "Jerry Maguire," that marquee players deserve all the glory (and by extension, the big paychecks). That's a tough hurdle to overcome. That the importance-of-teamwork message is coming from two players who have found success is admirable. We can only hope that the authors are sincere and that young folks take what they say to heart.
Several potential audiences come to mind for "Game Day:" Giants fans of all ages, Buccaneers fans of all ages, and youngsters who are just beginning to play and / or watch the game. Knowledge of basic football strategy is helpful to understand the storyline, so readers are apt to be a bit older than the usual target of children's picture books. "Game Day" won't appeal to everyone, but those who are attracted to it may learn an important lesson. They might even wish that the Barbers still played on the same team.Game Day (Paula Wiseman Books) Overview

Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography: An Instant Start-Up Manual for New dSLR Owners ReviewAlways eager for something to read in English, I picked up several of this author's books on a recent visit to New York. This one I actually got for a friend of mine back home, but I found myself totally absorbed in it on the plane ride. What a great idea this is!
You'd think that digital SLRs are too "advanced" a topic for a simple book like this one, but Busch obviously recognizes that many DSLRs are going to be purchased by people who have never held such a camera in their hands before. They are so affordable now that it just makes sense to get one and gain all the flexibility and expandability they offer, rather than invest in an expensive compact digital camera with far fewer features.
But what do you do when you're confronted with all those buttons and dials, and, even, a lens that comes right off the camera and can be replaced with another one? I'd say you should read this book. It starts at a very basic level, never talks down to you, and provides exactly the kind of information that new DSLR users need to begin taking pictures. I wouldn't recommend this book to experienced DSLR owners. It's really too basic for them. But that's a good thing for everybody else.Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography: An Instant Start-Up Manual for New dSLR Owners OverviewWith the increasing availability of affordable digital SLR cameras, serious photographers are literally snapping them up.These sophisticated and versatile cameras have unique advantages and features and the "Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography: An Instant Start-Up Manual for New dSLR Owners" serves as a guide to get any new dSLR user up and running quickly.Covering just the essentials, the book covers all of the basics specific to dSLR photography.New skills are taught on two-page spreads and feature clear and concise directions and many full-color illustrations and images.Appropriate for any brand of dSLR camera, the book will have news users up and shooting in no time.

Words, Words, Words: Teaching Vocabulary in Grades 4-12 ReviewJanet Allen has done a terrific job of blending theory with practice. Taking the last twenty years of research on vocabulary, Allen synthesizes the major guiding principles and illustrates a variety of strategies for helping students to acquire and develop vocabulary. As always, Allen writes in a clear, reader-friendly, no-nonsense style--a refreshing change from many of the language arts books in the field. As a reading specialist for the past twenty years, I highly recommend her new book.Words, Words, Words: Teaching Vocabulary in Grades 4-12 Overview
Do you spend hours creating word lists and weekly vocabulary tests only to find that your students have "forgotten" the words by the following week? Janet Allen and her students were frustrated with the same problem. Words, Words, Words describes the research that changed the way she and many other teachers teach vocabulary. It offers educators practical, research-based solutions for helping students fall into new language, learn new words, and begin to use those words in their speaking and writing lives.

This book offers teachers detailed strategy lessons in the following areas:activating and building background word knowledge;making word learning meaningful and lasting;building concept knowledge;using word and structural analysis to create meaning;using context as a text support;making reading the heart of vocabulary instruction.
Words, Words, Words provides educators with a strong research base, detailed classroom-based lessons, and graphic organizers to support the strategy lessons. At a time when teachers are struggling to meet content standards in reading across the curriculum, this book offers some practical solutions for meeting those standards in ways that are meaningful and lasting.

His name is Antonio Silva, although everyone calls him "the Phenom." He "was" a Brazilian soccer star. No one knows why he is here at Lawndale. The Landry News ReviewA couple of weeks ago I read "Frindle," by Andrew Clements, and decided it was one of the best kids' books I'd read in a long time. As a result, I decided to read "The Landry News," and my reaction is just as positive. I'm an elementary school librarian, and I can tell you I'll be ordering several more copies of these books--as well as other titles by Clements--for our library.
Clements has a way of writing a deceptively simple story--with many interweaving layers--that make his tales appealing to both children and adults. As in "Frindle," where a fifth-grade boy invents a new word, Clements takes a small, seemingly insignificant event, in this case the creation of a single newspaper posted on the wall by a new girl in class, to set in motion a growing chain of events that gets bigger and bigger. It's almost as if Andrew Clements is saying that there is no such thing as an insignificant event. As John Donne wrote, "No man is an island."
Some of the seemingly small things that moves the plot along in this engaging story are: not one, but two divorces; the newspaper on the wall; a burned-out teacher reading newspapers and drinking coffee; a mother reading a couple of verses from the Book of Psalms to her daughter; apologies; a helpful librarian; a "concerned" principal; an inquisitive small town newspaper reporter; new friends; the Bill of Rights and; "truth and mercy."
If these two first books are any indication, Andrew Clements is an author worth paying attention to. His stories have "heart."
This book, written at a 6th grade level, would make an excellent read-aloud for upper elementary classes. Having said that, I think this story is inspiring enough to be read to any class--even up through high school--that is involved in journalism or some kind of "newspapers in education" curriculum. This is one of those stories that has staying power and is filled with wisdom. Highly recommended! The Landry News Overview
