Another Season ReviewAs a parent of a young boy with Down Syndrome I very much enjoyed this book and recomend it to any new parent. It made me laugh, it made me cry and it opened my eyes to see how far the world has come with accepting people with disabilities. And just to know that there are parents before me who struggled with their child just as I struggle with mine and they too learned to live in a whole new world. And celebrated every little accomplishment just as we do with our son.Another Season Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Self-Testing Your IQ ReviewI gave up on this book after the first test - there were at least 3 wrong answers.
I did look ahead to chapter 2 which outlines the different types of subtests that makeup IQ tests. The section on spatial ability shows a problem that was included in the first IQ test - only this time it showed a different answer as being correct!
This is a hastily put together, poorly written (at least as far as the actual tests go) book.
The whole point of a book like this is to test your IQ and if the tests can't be trusted the book is useless. I've purchased books to test your IQ in the past and never had this sort of problem. This is the first book I've purchased in the Idiot series and I won't be buying another.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Self-Testing Your IQ OverviewAn enjoyable and entertaining way to measure brainpower. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Self-Testing Your IQ provides readers with tests that can be used to estimate a realistic IQ score, as well as games, puzzles, and more for an engaging and exciting workout for the mind. Using an amusement-based approach, IQ expert Dr. Jean Cirillo presents fun questions and answers that are rooted in standard IQ testing. •Tests and games included are designed to measure cognitive skills, reasoning abilities, problem-solving capabilities, verbal abilities, mathematics and calculation skills, short- and long-term memory, and much more •Because the tests are separated by area, this book has a strong "flip-through" factor, offering readers tests to be completed in one sitting for a comprehensive score, or as many or as few per sitting as time permits

Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability ReviewWhen I saw the price for this textbook, I thought it was a joke. My options were paying an average of $87. But I got it for under $10. When it arrives it was in the best condition. I could've asked for anything better. It was hard to tell that this interactive textbook/workbook was ever used. Being a proscrastinator, I was also pleasantly surprised that it arrived to my home in less than 72 hours. Thanks again.Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability OverviewThis new Fourth Edition contains many lesson plans that cover a variety of subject areas and grade levels (1-12), as well as action research activities that investigate the various dimensions of teaching. Many of the lesson plans are written by actual classroom teachers, and all of them have been examined by practicing teachers. More than simply a "how-to" manual, it is designed to help the teacher or teacher education student teach from a multicultural perspective. Each lesson plan offers a "Before" version (the lesson as it is usually taught) and an "After" version (how the lesson can be improved to "turn on" learning). A discussion explaining why the changes were made follows each lesson plan.

Strategies for Teaching Boys and Girls -- Secondary Level: A Workbook for Educators ReviewI have really enjoyed reading this book and will be using ideas I gathered here when I develop lesson plans for my classes. The concepts are clear and well-supported and easy to implement, either in whole or in part. The ideas work well for mixed-gender classes as well as for single-gender classes. I recommended this book be added to my school library's professional resource section.Strategies for Teaching Boys and Girls -- Secondary Level: A Workbook for Educators OverviewIn his best-selling classic Boys and Girls Learn Differently, Michael Gurian explained the origin and nature of gender differences in the classroom. His important book explored the behavior teachers observed and the challenges they faced with both boys and girls in their classrooms. Taking the next step, Strategies for Teaching Boys and Girls?Secondary level: A Workbook for Educators offers teachers a hands-on resource that draws on the Gurian Institute's research and training with secondary schools and school districts. The workbook presents practical strategies, lessons, and activities that have been field-tested in real classrooms and developed to harness boys' and girls' unique strengths.
The workbook is designed to help teachers build a solid foundation of learning and study habits that their students can use in the classroom and at home. It covers the key curricular areas and offers proven techniques to make learning, no matter what the subject, more engaging for all students.
The workbook is an essential resource for all teachers who want to improve their practice and get the most from all students?whatever their gender.

Secondary School Literacy Instruction ReviewThis textbook gave a lot of practical advice for incorporating reading into all of the subject areas. Different sections in the book had icons next to them to represent the subject areas that section was talking about. The book gave a lot of in depth information about every part of teaching reading, from activating prior knowledge to pre-reading strategies as well as comprehension techniques to use after reading. There is a chapter on technology that gives great ideas on how to incorporate the computer and internet into the classroom. I would recommend this book to any teacher who is struggling with teaching reading in the content classroom. If you are buying this book for a college course, it is definitely one I would take the time to read.Secondary School Literacy Instruction OverviewWell known for its detailed and practical explanations of reading, writing, and study strategies, SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY INSTRUCTION is required reading for all non-literacy teaching majors. Its motivational pedagogy especially appeals to pre-service teachers, who quickly realize that the text will help them improve their students' progress. Two hallmark chapters on content area teaching have brought this text wide acclaim for its unique application of literacy and study skills in all secondary subject areas. The text also is recognized for its proven pedagogy, including "Meeting the Challenge," which puts ideas into classroom practice, and "Focus on English Language Learners" and "Focus on Struggling Readers," which highlight important applications for these special needs learners in easy-to-locate sections in each chapter.

Teaching the Male Brain: How Boys Think, Feel, and Learn in School ReviewAs a former educator and a retired Managing Editor for Time-Life Education, it was refreshing to read a book for the educator that was practical and free of meaningless jargon. Abigail James writes a book for the classroom teacher that is clear, enjoyable, and full of nuggets of practical applications! Boys and girls learn differently -- and every classroom teacher discovers this truth. But our "one size fits all" education system does not take this into account. Instead of struggling with the "canned" approach to classroom management, a teacher can find creative and practical ways to do a better job with male and female learners. Ms. James bases her text on proven brain research, personal classroom experience in single-sex schools, and extensive quantitative research. Her humor and insight make this book an enjoyable read, as well as an informative one. I would recommend it highly to any classroom teacher.Teaching the Male Brain: How Boys Think, Feel, and Learn in School OverviewHelps teachers recognize sociological and neurobiological foundations of cognitive gender differences and develop differentiated teaching strategies that are responsive to boys' learning styles.

Making the Grade: Everything Your Fifth Grader Needs to Know ReviewThis book for the most part seems to be a good teaching tool, however there are errors in the math assessment given at the end of the lessons. There are two problems given that they have solved incorrectly. Also, the answer key is not very useful as several of the answers given are incorrect. One problem in the test asks for the perimeter of a rectangle, however the answer key gives the answer for the area of the rectangle. It takes up too much time to have to verify which answers are correct in the book and which are incorrect. It makes me question the quality of the content of the rest of the book.Making the Grade: Everything Your Fifth Grader Needs to Know OverviewThis brand-new and important workbook gives parents easy-to-apply methods for educating their fifth-grade children, whether as home schoolers with parents taking full control of their child's studies, or as parents cooperating with their child's teachers in standard classroom settings. The book gives parents guiding principles for teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Pages are perforated for multipurpose use, which can include independent learning by children or shared learning when kids and parents work together. Four curriculum sections are designed to guide teaching parents: Promoting literacy--reading, writing, listening, and speaking . . . Math--number patterns, problem solving, and other math-related concepts . . . Science--life, earth, and physical sciences . . . and Social Studies--history, geography, economics, and culture. Each section outlines subject matter for children to learn, preceded by planning and implementation strategies for parents. Parents get advice on ways to enhance the child's learning experience. They include Teaching Tips, or ways to explain difficult concepts to children, and ways to assess a child's success in grasping the given material. There is also advice on integrating the Arts, with suggestions for interactive learning in music and art; and activities and Games to promote hands-on learning experiences that relate to specific subject content. In each subject section a special feature titled In Your Community describes ways to explore the community where the family lives, taking advantage of local cultural affairs, business activities, environmental concerns, and government functions. Though the book is written primarily for parents, fifth-grade classroom teachers looking for new ideas and methods will also find inspiration. This book is one of three titles that introduce teaching methods and offer practical curriculum guides for different grade levels: grades three, five, and six. Additional titles for other K-6 grades are currently in preparation. All books feature maps, photos, and illustrations, many in color.

Differentiating Instruction With Menus Grades 6-8: Math ReviewI have taught both middle and high school. Differentiation seems to fall into two categories; learning style and achievement level. The topic of menus is frequently discussed but this is the first "how to" or book with examples I have seen. All can be tailored for any grade. Menus let a student choose.
If you aren't interested in menus, the book has great ideas for authentic assessment or projects.
If you are looking for a book to add something new to your teaching, you won't be disappointed. While you may not use exactly what is in the book, it takes all of the leg work out of starting from scratch.
Some examples:
Using 20-50-80 with a 100 point goal allows some students to do 5 - 20 point assignments which are lower level or an 80 and a 20 with the 80 being more like a small project.
The tic-tac-toe requires students to get a "tic-tac-toe" and depending on where you place your assignments, you can give them a choice of various types of work from drawings, games, to worksheets.
The book has examples of various math units including Order of Operations, Fractions, Geometry, etc.
I've used menus with gifted kids who work independently to struggling kids who have different learning styles. If math isn't your subject, the author has books for each core area both for middle and elementary school. If you are concerned that students aren't doing the same work, I'd recommend Rick Wormeli's book "Fair isn't always equal". It is truly enlightening. It gives the theory while Laurie's book gives the "how to".

Differentiating Instruction With Menus Grades 6-8: Math OverviewDifferentiating Instruction With Menus Grades 6–8 offers teachers everything they need to create a student-centered learning environment based on choice. Addressing the four main subject areas (language arts, math, science, and social studies) and the major concepts taught within these areas, these books provide a number of different types of menus that elementary and middle school students can use to select exciting products that they will develop so that teachers can assess what has been learned-versus using a traditional worksheet format. Each book contains attractive reproducible menus, each based on the levels of Bloom's Revised taxonomy, for students to use to guide themselves in making decisions as to which products they will develop after studying a major concept or unit. Using creative and challenging choices found in Tic- Tac-Toe Menus, List Menus, 2-5-8 Menus, Baseball Menus, and Game Show Menus, students will look forward to sharing their newfound knowledge throughout the year. Also included are specific guidelines for products, rubrics for assessing student products, and teacher introduction pages for each menu.

Stagg's University: The Rise, Decline, and Fall of Big-Time Football at Chicago (Sport and Society) ReviewProblems facing college football programs today include paying players, questionable player eligibility, and the fact that the bottom line is money-money-money. This book shows that these same problems were a factor in the development, rise, and fall of one of the pioneer college football programs.
Book gives insight into the history of the University of Chicago football program. Book focuses on the policy behind opponent scheduling, maintaining the eligibility of marginal students, and the issues of money-money-money. Good review of Stagg's career at the school, where he was viewed as the most important figure at the university for most of his tenure. Fine review of the decision to discontinue the sport, the first school from a major conference to do so.Stagg's University: The Rise, Decline, and Fall of Big-Time Football at Chicago (Sport and Society) OverviewFor this first case study of college football by a social historian, Lester has brought life to the story of a university football program that had an unusual beginning, a glorious middle, and a unique and inglorious conclusion. The nation's first tenured coach and the most creative and entrepreneurial of all college coaches from the 1890s to the 1920s, Amos Alonzo Stagg headed a program marked by creation of the letterman's club and by the dominant use of the forward pass, of jersey numbers, and of the collegiate modern T formation. Stagg, who had been an all-American football player at Yale University, joined the company of nine former college or seminary presidents and academic notables including John Dewey, Thorstein Veblen, and Albert Michelson when he was named associate professor of physical culture and coach of the football team at the University of Chicago in 1892. Within fifteen years the charismatic Stagg had developed a program so powerful that more Americans knew of it than of the physics experiments of Michelson, who in 1907 became the first U.S. citizen to win the Nobel Prize. The logical commercial trail established by Stagg and University President William Rainey Harper helped change football into a mass entertainment industry on American campuses. This fascinating look at the birth of bigtime college sport shows how today's gridiron glory and scandal were prefigured in Chicago's football industry of the early twentieth century, presided over by the brilliant, combative, saintly, but very human Amos Alonzo Stagg.
