The Million Dollar Kick (Million Dollar Series) ReviewGenre: Fiction
Three sentence summary: In this book Whisper Nelson is chosen to kick a ball past a professional soccer player and if she makes it, she is awarded $1,000,000. There's just a little problem: she is not athletic. She has not played a sport since she was eight.
What I liked most about the book: The thing I like about this book is that Whisper has a chance to win $1,000,000.
What I didn't like and why: The only thing that I didnt like about the book was that it was about soccer and I do not like soccer very much.
My favorite character and why: Whisper Nelson because she wasn't very athletic but she still tried. (why wouldn't you if you made the goal you can win $1,000,000.)
The scene, line, or passage that meant something to me and why (page#): Well it was probably when she was getting ready to kick the goal. It's exciting to kick a ball and if you score you win $1,000,000 dollars.
What I would say about this book to someone else: That it's nice that the characters are realistic and the author Dan Gutman discribed the setting very well.
One question i have after reading this book: I wonder if the soccer player became good friends with Whisper Nelson.
My strongest reason for recommending this book: Well if you like sports you would be very interested.

Macmillan First Dictionary ReviewI sampled several children's first dictionary's at the bookstore. None really compared to this one. It not only teaches children the meaning of words, where they come from and how they can be confused by same sounds, it also teaches about dates, money, measurment and has colorful maps. The only thing I would add to this dictonary is an alphabet column on the edge of the pages highlighted with the letter of each section. Game Day (Paula Wiseman Books) ReviewYoung Tiki and Ronde Barber play football for their hometown team in Virginia. Tiki often gets the ball and scores more often than Ronde, who is feeling a bit neglected and overlooked as a result. His blocks help Tiki score. Why don't people recognize that fact? His mother and his coach are fortunately of the mindset that every effort is worthwhile and that teamwork is what wins games and spells success. Ronde feels some of that spirit by the end of the story.
This book therefore attempts to battle the prevailing stereotype, perpetuated by the sports media and by such movies as "Jerry Maguire," that marquee players deserve all the glory (and by extension, the big paychecks). That's a tough hurdle to overcome. That the importance-of-teamwork message is coming from two players who have found success is admirable. We can only hope that the authors are sincere and that young folks take what they say to heart.
Several potential audiences come to mind for "Game Day:" Giants fans of all ages, Buccaneers fans of all ages, and youngsters who are just beginning to play and / or watch the game. Knowledge of basic football strategy is helpful to understand the storyline, so readers are apt to be a bit older than the usual target of children's picture books. "Game Day" won't appeal to everyone, but those who are attracted to it may learn an important lesson. They might even wish that the Barbers still played on the same team.Game Day (Paula Wiseman Books) Overview

Best Kept Secret (Pink Locker Society) ReviewBefore having "the talk" with my daughter, I searched the web for a site that would not only be age appropriate on the subject, but, one that would show normal healthy handling of the situation. These books, along with the website are wonderful and my daughter just Loves them. The whole issue as well as other middle-school dramas are handled beautifully. It was about 8 months later that my daughter received her "gift/curse" (however you want to put it!) and she never skipped a beat. I don't think this should be used to replace talking with your child, but I think it helps to dispell the worry and show that it is perfectly normal and that it isn't scary. I used it as a read aloud in my classroom, with outstanding sucess. The kids loved it. Barry Denenberg, the author, recreates Jackie's life in a way that keeps the reader's interest throughout. In fact, this biography reads a little like a novel.
