I also really liked the boxes giving background on interesting aspects of Japanese culture throughout the text. As in other Frommer guides this book starts with the "Best Of" in Dublin, how to get there and what you'll need when planning your trip. It then goes on to getting to know Dublin, places to stay, places to eat and drink, attractions, shopping and night life. Additionally, this guide includes places that you can easily visit just outside of Dublin City in Counties Wicklow and Kildare. The review continues with hours and dates places are open as well as prices for attractions, for accommodations and for dining. For each category there are phone numbers, web sites, if available, and general maps of the area. A newer version of the is book is due to come out any day now but probably has similar information only with updated prices. Culture and Customs of Spain (Culture and Customs of Europe) ReviewThis book gives an excellent overview of many aspects of Spain, in chapters entitled Context (geographic setting, languages spoken, etc.), Religion, Customs, Media, Cinema, Literature, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. Particular attention is given to the changes in these respects that have taken place during the years of societal transition from 1975 and onward. It should thus not be thought of as a traveling guide. Each chapter is followed by a list of references documenting the stuff presented: none goes beyond the year 1999 so the book has obviously been in the editing process several years before appearing. But among the references there are many tips of quality internet sites for those interested to pursue a given topic at greater depth.
As one who has visited Spain many times I recognize much of what is written here as to the point. I sense no tilting to any one side when it comes to presenting controversial topics -and these abound in Spain. If I were a student of Spanish language and/or history, or a retiree contemplating to settle in Spain, I would want to own this book. The drawback is the ridiculous price asked for a 206-page book with only 25 b/w pictures. For this, I detract one star.
(Note that the "Handbook of Spanish popular culture" by the same author is virtually the same book, the main difference being that in this older version there is a separate chapter, Ch. 1, entitled Languages, which is of interest if you are specially looking for a non-technical overview of this. In the 2002 version language is taking a back seat with only a few pages devoted to it within the "Context" chapter 1.)Culture and Customs of Spain (Culture and Customs of Europe) Overview

It says at nauseum that the Italians are loyal to their friends and family. The assumption is that if you are from an English speaking country you aren't. It is also biased against southern Italy. It assumes that the people buying the book are only going to Milan, and are married men with kids. I think for the money you can buy another book that is more thorough. It only took me two hours to read this book, and for what I got out of it it wasn't worth it. The New Spaniards, 2nd Edition ReviewThis must be a definitive review of Spanish society and culture in the last half century, and while it's certainly fascinating reading, it is oversaturated. It can be a bit difficult to get through learning EVERYTHING about Spain if you are a newcomer to the topic. The section on the press becomes passionately detailed. Hooper seems to give the names, political bents and histories (behind the scenes and otherwise,) of every newspaper and magazine printed since 1936, as well as statistics about readership levels among various classes and regions over time which he compares to those of Britain and other European countries. Granted the information, with his analysis, does make for a very vivid portrait of the country, but you may feel a bit as though you're being hit on the head with a hammer when he starts doing the same thing in a chapter on television broadcasting. I simply couldn't keep track of the TV stations, and what they were up to, who was running them, how and why. Though I did get the point. Spanish love television, and they don't seem to have a problem with government control of the medium.
On the other hand the chapters on education, the arts, film, and the significantly independent regions of Spain, to wit, the Basque, the Catalan and the Galician regions, were much more breathable, and did fill in many gaps in my understanding,(though there were far too many personalities to keep track of, and all involved in very intricate negotiations,) as did earlier chapters about the general History of the country, and how the conflicts, between the various nations which came to form Spain, still exist today. In the minds of most Spaniards, the formation of Spain as a nation was never a forgone conclusion. And Hooper covers this national psychological fragmentation, and its present day outpourings and consequences, with startling detail.The New Spaniards, 2nd Edition OverviewA masterly portrait of contemporary Spain-fully revised, expanded, and updated Modern-day Spain is a country changing at bewildering speed. Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China ReviewAn outstanding book. There really is no better way to tell the story of China's incredible transformation over the past 25 years than through the lives of a few well-chosen characters. Pomfret delivers, beautifully. In a winning narrative, he skillfully braids the intricate tales of several classmates from Nanjing University, where Pomfret went in 1981, bunking with seven roommates in a tiny dorm room. Together, taking a variety of tracks over the next 20 years, those classmates end up capturing the striking horrors and unpredictable aspirations of the Chinese nation. By keeping in touch with them, as he matures into a first-rate journalist, Pomfret is able to gain a level of intimacy and knowledge about their lives that is unmatched in any narrative about Modern China. His writing is sharp and convivial. His story-telling ability matches the stories themselves, which are unbelievable.
Book-Idiot Zhou confides to Pomfret that he was a tormentor, not a victim, during the Cultural Revoluiton. Later, he alternates teaching Marxist history with deal-making in the urine industry. Song, a born Romeo, falls for an Italian woman and has sneak-away trysts. My own favorite was Little Guan, persecuted at age 11 for wiping herself with a piece of paper that said 'Long live Chairman Mao. She is a cheerful fighter, and bucks the odds over and over to succeed.
Pomfret is masterful. Armed with a fluent Chinese and a deft pen, he becomes an outstanding journalist, leading the coverage of Tiananmen, being formally expelled from China, and coming back again as Beijing Bureau chief for the Washington Post to establish himself as the dean of foreign correspondents. His newspaper stories were the gold standard of China coverage for several years. In this book, more than anything, it is his extraordinary ability to learn, ruminate and convey the stories of his Chinese classmates that stands out. Highly recommended.

Batfishing in the Rainforest: Strange Tales of Travel and Fishing ReviewBatfishing in the Rainforest is one of the funniest, most insightful and heart touching collections of essays I've ever read. After reading Mr. White's newest novel (The Mangrove Coast) I have now gone on a search for every book he's written, and Batfishing in the Rainforest is unlike anything he -- or anyone else -- has done. Mr. White wrote most of these essays while he was a fishing guide, he says, at a lovely old marina on Sanibel Island, the famous vacation spot in Florida. From that little marina, he ranged far afield, traveling around the world to write quirky stories for Outside Magazine. The first story in the collection, a tale about his hilarious dog, Gator, is absolutely unforgetable and well worth the price of admission. The stories which follow, although occasionally uneven, are always uniquely written, often funny and always intelligent. Mr. White is one of those writer we all love to "discover'. He describes everything from bodily functions to theft to dishonest summit claims, to bureaucratic corruption, and all with a great wit and perception. Several of these essays left me gasping for breath from laughter while others, like his story about Alison Hargreave had me fighting tears. Working At Play: A History of Vacations in the United States ReviewAs soon as I first spotted this book I knew I had to read it. I was not disappointed! The author covers approximately a 150 year period ending around 1940. She brings to the reader many fascinating aspects surrounding not only the types of vacations (e.g. religious retreats, resorts for the wealthy, camping, etc.), but perhaps more importantly, the psychological aspects of vacationing in America. Aron describes, in a reflection of the book's title, how the working class had to break the thought process that working was the only way of life; vacationing -- or "play" -- took a number of years to become an acceptable practice. I especially found interesting the role of religion in the acceptance, or non-acceptance, of vacationing. The book was very well researched and, in my opinion, is well worth the investment. "Working at Play" is a wonderful look at American society. There were many times as I was reading the book that I would just pause and reflect on the subject matter, thinking to myself "Now that's something that I would have never even thought about."Working At Play: A History of Vacations in the United States Overview
