Pick A Party ReviewAs an award-winning professional event planner who has been in the business for over 15 years, I figured there probably wasn't a whole lot I was going to learn by reading Patty's book, but just in case there was, I thought I'd buy it. I'm so glad I did! There were TONS of ideas that I know will work not only for my clients' parties, but also will be fun to do when I'm planning a party for my own friends.
Most are easy to duplicate and adapt to every situation...and Patty even provided a grid to help the "thematically challenged" find a theme to fit any occasion! :)
The ideas are bulleted and easy to read. And if you need a little more of an explanation or "how-to," Patty's provided that also for many of the projects.
If you are a newbie host, or are like me, and have thrown hundreds...thousands...of parties, BUY THIS BOOK!You'll use it again and again.Pick A Party Overview This is the biggest and most complete book of party themes ever written! This is the party "bible" for anyone interested in hosting a special event. It provides 145 innovative party themes and occasions for all of life's special events, including both traditional and less-celebrated holidays. It also comes with a comprehensive, easy-to-use chart designed to help party planners find appropriate themes for each occasion. Includes party ideas for Life cycle events -- from birthdays, bar mitzvahs, and graduations to weddings, anniversaries, over-the-hills, and retirements; Holiday celebrations -- from New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day revelry to Halloween, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas parties; Fun TV get-togethers -- from the Academy Awards and the Super Bowl to the Kentucky Derby and election night coverage; Creative and fun themes -- from a Mardi Gras masquerade and a Las Vegas casino to a Hawaiian Luau and Caribbean beach parties.

Media Promotion & Marketing for Broadcasting, Cable & the Internet, Fifth Edition ReviewThis book is a typical college textbook. A lot of definitions... a lot of fairly rudimentary information.
It's a good book for people who want to learn basic information about media marketing, but it goes into little to no depth about most aspects of the field.
I also don't get the sense that the authors -- college professors-- have much of a sense of the industry as it is today. Other than a mention of sniping and on-air bugs (which debuted several years ago), the book seems a little out of touch.
Therefore, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone currently working in media marketing, because you'll learn very little new knowledge.
But, as it's not presented as an intermediate or advanced book, it's a good resource for beginners.Media Promotion & Marketing for Broadcasting, Cable & the Internet, Fifth Edition Overview

Meet the Mertzes: The Life Stories of I Love Lucy's Other Couple ReviewWatching I LOVE LUCY and THE LUCY SHOW as a kid growing up in Europe, I was naturally not aware of Hollywood hierachy. I didn't know that there were stars and then there were the Second Bananas. In fact, I thought Lucy almost too noisily American and preferred Ethel's (and later Viv's) quiet, no-nonsense approach to life. Having working in the entertainment field for years and even lived in Los Angeles on occasion, I now realize the gulf that must have existed between the stars and their jovial support. So much more welcome is this wonderful dual biography, which finally gives Vivian Vance and Bill Frawley their well-deserved due. And although they both fought personal demons (and don't we all?), what emerges from the pages of this lovingly written biography are two top-notch professionals, whose long careers stand as testaments to their versatility. Let's hear it for the Second Bananas!Meet the Mertzes: The Life Stories of I Love Lucy's Other Couple OverviewMeet the Mertzes is an expansive dual biography chronicling the lives of two of America's most popular situation-comedy actors, William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who portrayed Fred and Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy. This meticulously researched book contains interviews with Frawley's and Vance's colleagues, friends, and relatives, and explores their personal and professional lives before, during, and after I Love Lucy. With a complete filmography and videography of each, Meet the Mertzes finally sets the record straight on the lives and legacies of these compelling stars who detested one another. You'll learn about:-Vance's successful Broadway career prior to I Love Lucy-Frawley's vaudevillian roots and his passion for baseball-Vance's nervous breakdown after the collapse of her first marriage-Frawley's drinking and carousing-Lucille Ball's caustic relationship with both of her costars-Vance's hatred of being known to the world as Ethel Mertz

Never Just a Game: Players, Owners, and American Baseball to 1920 ReviewThis work is the first volume of a two-part study on labor relations in Major League Baseball (MLB). It deals with the nineteenth century experience, as well as the early years of the twentieth century through the "Black Sox" scandal and the appointment of Kennesaw Mountain Landis as the first MLB Commissioner. Burk notes in his preface how he decided upon a title: "for those who operate professional franchises, and for those employed by them in the sport, baseball has never been `just a game'." Its history has been marked by "bitter off-field struggles between players and management over prestige, power, and profits." It also included fights "over who would have access to its opportunities, how its profits would be divided, and...who would control its operations" (p. xi).
Mining several primary sources, many at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Burk fashions a narrative of divergent wills. He draws the familiar story of how companies formed in the 1860s and 1870s to field baseball teams, played each other, and eventually established leagues. The owners hired players, treating them like other labor groups in the United States. Like other workingmen, the players sought to maximize their salaries and benefits, and confrontation resulted. In virtually all instances, these disputes ended with the owners gaining greater authority over their employees, and the players gained resentment at these developments. He also relates the already well-known rebellion led by John Montgomery Ward to invigorate the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players and start a league of its own in 1890, as well as the establishment of several rival leagues whose competition served to raise the income of the players. Most of these efforts ended in failure, and the one instance when it did not, with the rise of the American League, the owners of both leagues combined to create a stable business climate.
Burk also spends considerable effort on the creation of the owners' ingenious "reserve clause." Arising in the "Gilded Age" of the latter 1870s, this became a seemingly inviolate section of all players' contracts that allowed the team the right to reserve the services of their players for the next season even without a signed contract. This clause was dreamed up by coal baron William A. Hulbert set about ensuring that the power in MLB resided with the owners rather than the players. It stated that the club had the right to renew a player's contract following each season--effectively making the player's contract the property of the team that first acquired him for the rest of the player's career. While the contract, and hence the player could be traded, a player could not unilaterally choose to play for another team even if he did not have a current signed contract. The manner in which this legal means of controlling players was concocted and adopted amounts to some of the most interesting sections of this book. It was not until the 1970s that the players finally overturned the "reserve clause" and entered the current age of "free agency."
What resulted from these labor disputes was a stable business in which MLB owners made considerable profits and could exploit players without much fear of anything. For example, he discusses the manipulation of MLB rules to depress individual players' statistics, thereby reducing their bargaining position at contract negotiation time. In the process of this narrative, Burk unpacks the economics of MLB in its first half century.
While there is much to praise in this book, I recommend caution when considering parts of it. First, Burk is working from sketching economic records and his tables of salaries, club costs, etc., do not betray the fact that much of his analysis is based on educated guesses rather than on "hard data." Second, Burk is biased toward the players in these disputes and his narrative paints the owners as evil conspirators. While I also support the side of the players, one must be aware that the owners were probably not as evil as sometimes noted nor the players as saintly as too often concluded. Finally, the issue of a conspiracy of owners to beat down and control the players is certainly present, especially when reviewing the history of the "reserve clause" and the prohibition of African American players, but it is important to question the level of collusion that might have existed among the MLB owners. The premise that the owners acted in total agreement, in lock step, as a cartel to maximize their profits belies the inherent competition between them, both on and off the field. Rather, they often disagreed and fought each other fully as much as they fought the players. We have seen this in the period since 1920 as well, and it is an important point to consider when reading this very fine book.
I recommend "Never Just a Game" as an important benchmark in the non-buff study of baseball history. It should find a place on the bookshelves of all those who take MLB history seriously.Never Just a Game: Players, Owners, and American Baseball to 1920 OverviewAmerica's national pastime has been marked from its inception by bitter struggles between owners and players over profit, power, and prestige. In this book, the first installment of a highly readable, comprehensive labor history of baseball, Robert Burk describes the evolution of the ballplaying work force: its ethnocultural makeup, its economic position, and its battles for a place at the table in baseball's decision-making structure.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the growing popularity of baseball as a spectator sport and the dramatic upsurge of America's urban population created conditions that led to franchise competition, the development of rival leagues, and trade wars, in turn triggering boom-and-bust cycles, franchise bankruptcies, and league mergers. According to Burk, players repeatedly tried to use these circumstances to better their economic positions by playing one team off against another. Their successes proved short-lived, however, because their own internal divisions, exploited by management, undercut attempts to create collective-bargaining institutions. By 1920, owners still held the upper hand in the labor-management battle, but as today's sports pages show, owners did not secure a long-term solution to their labor problems.

Brand NFL: Making and Selling America's Favorite Sport (Caravan Book) ReviewMichael Oriard explores an area relatively uncovered in the vast flow of information about football. And that is the establishment of the NFL as a business, especially a media and entertainment enterprise instead of a simple sport played by romanticized warriors.
Oriard is first-rate on the history of the game and its development from a minor sport to the top tier starting in the late 1950s and 1960s. He nicely balanced football and its personalities, such as Lombardi, with the awakening of football as a business, primarily under the timely leadership of Pete Rozelle. People who remember the 1960s should enjoy the history, and young fans could find much to learn. The author is informative and concise.
He then moves into the next wave, with Joe Namath as one of the anchors, with his free spirit and large contract as indicators that, in retrospect, were seminal that seem almost quaint by now. Wow, long hair and white shoes! Here again, the personalities and the business evolved as parallel trends, influencing each other. Pete Rozelle began to lose his grip and the stakes got too high as football became America's #1 sport and the media coverage meant problems became public. Financial visionaries such as Jerry Jones of Dallas were about to open another whole dimension.
Oriard writes extensively about the beginning of the labor movement within football, all the way to the current relative peace. This is possibly both one of the strongest and weakest parts of the book. The strength is that the topic is relatively unfamiliar and normally underestimated in its importance, plus Oriard the ex-player has that insider's perspective. The weakness may be that it may be more than many fans wanted to know, and Oriard certainly is not impartial. Even so, the one-sided nature of owner-player relationship in the old days is almost appalling to read now. Younger fans may also be shocked to hear how little revenue football had and how little players made.
Oriand tackles one of the third rails of sports, that of why black athletes dominate, black cultural issues as they relate to football, and both subtle and obvious racism. He makes some reasonable observations, while also hemming and hawing around specifics where you cannot really win. The "exception" in my title is that he really should have stayed away from intelligence, other than the obvious history of blacks being kept from so-called skill positions that allegedly needed mental skills beyond their capacity. Wading into general intelligence controversies served no purpose, and Oriand misrepresented the famous "Bell Curve" book anyway. In this case, stick to your knitting.
Oriand closed with the transition from Paul Tagliabue to Roger Goodell as the new commissioner, naturally a time to re-assess the state of the business. To Oriand, Goodell fits football's continued growth in complexity that demands far more than Pete Rozelle the PR man. Oriand is very optimistic about football's future, yet he doesn't shy from some of the risks.
That attitude helps the general tone and credibility of the book. A breathless "homer" would have been uninteresting. A negative beat-down would have been unrealistic and pointless. As he said near the end, "Is the NFL become primarily a media company, or, is it still, above all, a national *football* league? It is both, of course, but the balance has been shifting, and how the commissioner will manage that balance over the coming years will be the story of the post-new NFL, whatever it will be called."
I can't argue with that. What I hope Oriand and Goodell realize is that excessive commercialization is itself a major risk. Major sporting events already are flirting with unwatchability with all the commercials and side shows. It's one area that could have gotten a bit more attention here. Why exactly is it that people like me watch less football than before, why don't I want to pay for the NFL Network, and why don't I like being shaken down at every opportunity by Dan Snyder?Brand NFL: Making and Selling America's Favorite Sport (Caravan Book) Overview

Creating the National Pastime ReviewG. Edward White's book, Creating the National Pastime, examines the changes in major league baseball during the first half of the 1900's. The slow acceptance of radio, night baseball, black players, the rise of the commissioner's office, and the ironclad nature of the reserve clause are among the topics looked at in the book. The book does a good job examining some of the changes that took place between 1903 and 1953 in baseball that we take for granted today (night baseball, steel and concrete ballparks, etc.), but does get tedious at times with its wealth of somewhat arcane information. Overall, a pretty solid (if not always engrossing) read.Creating the National Pastime Overview

Leveling the Playing Field: How the Law Can Make Sports Better for Fans ReviewMany of the major issues of modern professional sports revolve around issues of the law. Harvard's Henry J. Friendly professor of law Paul C. Weiler believes this firmly and "Leveling the Playing Field" is his attempt to explore this subject. Much of this terrain has been pursued in other works, but Weiler's perspective is interesting. Weiler takes the reader through the looking glass world of the sports business, exploring the nature of free agency, the various revenue streams of the major sports franchises, the long history of the shakedown for new sports complexes paid for with public money, the problems of steroids and other methods of cheating, and television and other revenues generated through sports activities. It is a familiar story, and Weiler tells it relatively well. His approach is balanced and his tone is evenhanded, even when the subject does not deserve it.
His solution to the problems of Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League boil down to one piece of national legislation. "The only way to avoid a regular replay of the experience of the 1990s is to have Congress pass a law that bars redistribution of middle-American taxpayer dollars into the pockets of wealthy Americans like George Steinbrenner." He adds, "I hope my readers now understand that as fans we would be better off if our favorite sports had the combination of a salary tax and a stadium cap" (p. 345). That might help, although I am opposed to any restraint on the ability of players to receive whatever income they are able to negotiate for their services since they are fundamentally the stars of the show, but I only wish it were that simple! I very much question all the problems of the sports business could be cured in this way, and I must add that the devil would be in the details of any such congressional action and its ramifications might be strikingly different from what was intended. Witness the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act and how it simply changed the rules of the game; it did not appreciably alter the game itself. Additionally, the ability to pass legislation of this type in early twenty-first century America appears virtually nil.
While I found this book quite interesting and worthy of consideration, I was annoyed by the relative lack of academic rigor in the discussion. At no point, for instance, did Weiler offer detailed thoughts on the nature of the legislation that he believes is necessary. Additionally, the book is completely without scholarly apparatus, not even a selected bibliography, and I find this unacceptable in a serious work.Leveling the Playing Field: How the Law Can Make Sports Better for Fans Overview

Sports and Entertainment Marketing ReviewI was in Ken Kaser's marketing class for two years and i can honestly say with utmost certainty that Mr. Kaser's sports marketing book is the greatest, most compelling story of human drama and intrigue that i have ever read. It is a poignant and touching journey into the human psyche and inded the very nature of man. Through his stunning portrayal of the book's main character (a Jewish man named Trey), Kaser delves into the relms of intelectual enlightenment and human sexuality. While many subjects are explored through the main character's search for the meaning of life, he ultimately confronts the eternal questions of existence such as "Why am i here?", and "Why is Tenney such a bastard?". This book is a life changing epic full of all the things that make great literature great. Ken Kaser has given the world a gift it will appreciate forever and he will go down in history as the greatest writer in the English language. I give it 5 stars.Sports and Entertainment Marketing OverviewSPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING 3E continues to use sports and entertainment topics as the foundation for teaching marketing concepts. Sport Funding and Finance (Sport Management) ReviewI never recieved this item... no tracking number. lost in mail. bad deal.Sport Funding and Finance (Sport Management) OverviewSport Funding and Finance is written for students who wish to get both a broad and deep understanding of the commercial and financial structure of sport in various contexts. To this end, the book provides students with a three-tiered learning experience. The first tier provides students with a broad appreciation of the commercial evolution of sport, and how it has managed to move from the kitchen-table model to the corporate-boardroom model, and along the way become quite a sophisticated industry from a financial viewpoint. Attention will be given to the commercial development of sport using USA and European pro-sport leagues as a benchmark. Changes in the funding arrangement of sport will be highlighted, and the different funding sources will be examined in detail. The second tier will give students a sound grounding in the principles and practice of effective financial management. Students will be introduced to basic accounting principles and practice, and then led into more complex issues of pricing, costing, financial analysis, budgeting, and financial projections. The third tier will explore future developments in sport finance and funding, and examine how they will impact on sport management knowledge and skill requirements.Within this framework, the book will provide students with two types of learning outcomes. The first outcome is knowledge based and will include the following:* a grounded understanding of the commercial evolution of sport from 1950-the present* an understanding of the different commercialphases sport goes through to reach commercial maturity* an appreciation of the major global sport events and leagues, and their financial arrangements.* an insight intothe financialstrengths and weaknesses of contemporary sport. The second outcome is skill-based, and by reading the book and completing the cases students will be able to:* identify the different legal structures of sport organisations and the financial implications of each structure* explain the main accounting conventions and how they impact on the financial management of sport organisations* identify the foundations of double entry bookkeeping* construct a simple set of accounts for a sport organisation* use financial ratio analysis to evaluate the financial performance of sport organisations * understand different methods of constructing budgets, and use them to control the financial operation of a sport organisation* set up models for identifying and managing costs* identify different methods for setting prices for sport goods and services, and to apply them to specific settings and events.* undertake a financial planning exercise and/or feasibility study for a sport organisation or facility* undertake a cost-benefit analysis for a sport organisation event. Therefore, students will obtain both a broad knowledge of the commercial evolution of sport and its current financial operation, AND the necessary skills for understanding and supervising the financial operations of a sport organisation.* Provides a unique balance of macro analysis of sport finance and micro-instruction in the skills of financial management * Developed learning features specifically created for semester long courses create an excellent learning tool for both students and lecturers* Provides both a broad knowledge of the commercial evolution of sport and its current financial operation

Advanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing ReviewAs someone who had done sport marketing for over 15 years - from almost every angle and across the spectrum of sports from the Olympics to MLB, I initially thought I'd be one of the better suited to review this book.
However, keeping in mind this was written for undergraduates, I found it wasn't what I expected. I expected a book that was written for people having at least a basic understanding of marketing and business principles (e.g. if in school, they would have taken an entry-level marketing and business principles class.)
But, this is a marketing 101 textbook for those that have had no previous marketing/business management education. It defines sport marketing as the marketing of any sport related product - from health drinks and branded t-shirts to ticket packages and sports-related retailers. Then, it hits the highlights of just about every major aspect of marketing & business management - planning, positioning, sales organizations, research, advertising, promotion, product life cycle, decision making, retail management, supply chain, merchandising, ethics, etc., etc., etc.
In deference to the title, four things occur: 1) In descriptions, the word "sport" is placed in front of marketing, even though it would be just as applicable without it, 2) Examples and case studies are drawn from the sports world, and 3)"From Theory to Practice" insets offer a quick look from someone in the industry with descriptions of their jobs and tips for entry-level positions, 4) Finally, it gives a better look at sponsorships than most other basic texts.

For professors. there's online powerpoint presentations and quizzes to support. Bottom Line: I can't help thinking students that might never be exposed to basic Marketing or Business Management principles could very well be attracted to a class called "Sport Marketing", and would learn from this text. On the other hand, if you know the basics and want a really advanced look at Sport Marketing, I'd suggest picking something more targeted to your specific sport marketing needs or interests to get a truly "Advanced Theory and Practice" education.
Advanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing OverviewAdvanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing is the first book to address this increasingly popular subject at an advanced level. Where existing sport marketing texts restate concepts learned at an introductory marketing level, this book goes beyond, by expanding the knowledge of the student with advanced marketing theory which is specifically related to the crucial areas in sport marketing.Advanced Theory and Practice in Sport Marketing is vital reading for any sport marketing student wishing to progress their knowledge and take their understanding of the industry to the next level.*Practitioner interviews accompanying every chapter, teaming practical advice with high-level sports marketing theory* A clear structure where each chapter includes chapter outlines, chapter objectives, a glossary and ethical and global case studies for illustrative and informative real-world understanding* PowerPoint slides and an electronic test bank available online to accelerate learning* An analysis of advanced topics untouched by existing publications such as data analysis, sportmarketing information systems, sport marketing logistics and more
