The Complete Guide to Soccer Fitness and Injury Prevention: A Handbook for Players, Parents, and Coaches ReviewDon Kirkendall is a doc that really has "been there and done that." This book provides super information, based on studies and years of experience from the youth to national team level on what comprises soccer fitness, how to improve it, and how to test for it. The section on injury prevention alone is worth the cover price. This is a great way for club and high school coaches, in particular, to get up to date with the latest in exercise physiology as it relates to soccer. It's a much more user friendly book than Jens Bangsbo's excellent, but way down in the physiological weeds, book. The Complete Guide to Soccer Fitness and Injury Prevention: A Handbook for Players, Parents, and Coaches OverviewWith decades of combined experience treating and training elite soccer players, exercise physiologist Donald Kirkendall and orthopedic specialist William E. Garrett Jr. present a comprehensive guide to health and fitness for soccer players, offering expert advice for soccer teams at all levels. The book addresses the physical and mental demands of the game, including the differences between boys' and girls' games and the differences in the levels of play in youth, college, and professional leagues; nutrition fundamentals, including food, drink, and vitamin supplements; physiology and training methods, with an emphasis on the basic elements of flexibility, speed, strength, and conditioning; and injury treatment and prevention.

The Runner's Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know--And Then Some ReviewThis is a great little stocking stuffer for the marathoner/half-marathoner on your shopping list. Anyone else will have no interest in it, but the distance-running guys and gals will get a chuckle out of this friendly little volume.
There's little, if any, actual practical advice but there are immediately-identifiable "rules" and observations we die hards appreciate. It's almost like a collection of sidebars from your favorite running magazine. They kind of stuff you might clip out and post on your fridge, stick in your running journal, or tuck into a card to a running pal.
The author comes across as a completely affable, good natured and nice guy...the exact kind of person you'd want for a running partner or running alongside you in a race.
On the plus side, it never hurts to get a few reminders about safety and courtesy from someone who's been there, too.The Runner's Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know--And Then Some OverviewEvery sport has rules. Running is no exception. If you're curious, just visit the Web site of USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body, where you'll find detailed dictates on everything from disqualification to bib-number placement to the caliber of the starter's pistol. But what about the everyday rules of running? The unspoken ones that pertain to the lingo, behavior, and etiquette that every seasoned runner seems to know and every newbie needs to learn? Veteran runner Mark Remy and the editors of Runner's World magazine provide answers to these very questions and many more in The Runner's Rule Book. Inside you'll find: Rule 1.18 LEARN, AND LOVE, THE FARMER'S BLOW Farmer's Blow \ fär-m?rz blo \ n: a process by which one clears a nostril of mucus by pinching shut the opposing nostril and exhaling forcefully [syn: Snot Rocket] Rule 2.32 DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO FINISH AHEAD OF A COSTUMED RUNNER Because being outkicked by Elmo is too much to bear. Rule 3.1 CALL THEM RUNNING SHOES They aren't sneakers, or tennis shoes, or kicks, or trainers (sorry, Brits). They are running shoes. So call them that. …and many, many more. With 100+ rules that cover the basics of running, racing, track etiquette, and apparel and gear, including hilarious running commentary on running culture, The Runner's Rule Book will be the reference guide you'll turn to again and again for answers to your burning running questions.

The Chicago Marathon ReviewGood book for those who live in Chicago and want to learn the history of the marathon. As a first timer running Chicago, I thought it would give me course insight, running strategies and what to expect running the marathon. it wasn't this type of book. I returned it.The Chicago Marathon Overview
In The Chicago Marathon, Andrew Suozzo reveals this citywide ritual as far more than a simple race. Providing a full-spectrum look at the event's production and participants, Suozzo shows how the elements that comprise the marathon also reflect modern Chicago's politics, its people, and the ways the city engages with the wider world.

The book encompasses all of the forces that come together to make the race the spectacle it has become today. Beginning with a brisk history of the marathon, Suozzo leads readers from its origins in Greek mythology to its modern reality, and also along its rocky road to international prominence. He investigates the roles of sponsorship, small-business support, and the city's intervention on behalf of the marathon, as well as the alliances the event has forged with the media and charity fundraisers. He also discusses race management and the grassroots support that ultimately make it possible, with a special perspective on the aid station directors and volunteers. Finally, The Chicago Marathon features numerous interviews with the runners themselves, ranging from world-renowned professional athletes to amateurs with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Playing Ball with the Boys: The Rise of Women in the World of Men's Sports ReviewAs a freelance female sports writer, I found the topic of the book incredibly interesting. However, it lacks a deeper perspective of women's role in sports. Betsy Ross tells in the stories of her and other women who have found their way in the testosterone saturated world of sports. Ross, a journalist, not only presents the profiles of other female journalists but of female athletes, coaches and team managers. While every women has a unique story, the profiles become formulaic. They all follow the pattern of
- how she got into sports
- her resume
- how her gender hindered her
- advice for the younger generation.
Also, everyone cheers about Title IX, the legislation that has helped provide equal opportunities for both genders in sports. Everyone that Ross talks to has no problem with Title IX until the very end of the book where negative issues are given a page. While Ross's book deserves to be read by young women who would like to enter sports, it glosses over more important issues.
Playing Ball with the Boys: The Rise of Women in the World of Men's Sports OverviewFemale sideline reporters are the fastest-growing trend in broadcasts of professional and college football: names like Suzy Kolber, Erin Andrews, and Andrea Kremer are now as well known as any of the men in the booth. But even more has been going on. In recent years women have garnered spots as sports columnists and reporters, talk-show hosts, and even coaches and team administrators. Yet there has never been a book about this phenomenon. Former ESPN news anchor Betsy Ross fills this gap with Playing Ball with the Boys, a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the emerging role that women play in sports broadcasting and reporting, as well as in the business of sports. The book features interviews with the legendary women's sports activist Billie Jean King, as well as Women's Professional Soccer League leader Tonya Antonucci and ESPN College Basketball Analyst Rebecca Lobo. Prominent women working in the media are also featured in the book, including WFAN's Ann Ligouri, CBS' Lesley Visser, ESPN's Pam Ward, USA Today's Christine Brennan and Sports Illustrated's Selena Roberts. Playing Ball with the Boys delivers firsthand accounts of the struggles and triumphs of women succeeding in what has long been a man's game.
